Well, for some reason I thought that this was going to be more like a thorough vegan Joy of Cooking type book but it isn’t quite so comprehensive. However; it is great, and I didn’t end up being disappointed.
Only cons:
1. all the photos are in the middle of the book vs. on the recipe pages
2. for my taste too long vegetable steaming times given (although possibly they & I are thinking of different sized pieces of veggies)
3. and most importantly: the authors don’t have a restau...more

First, the recipes are very well written and explained. The authors don't leave out any details, and include things like "when you bake this cake, it's really really important to not open the oven for at least 45 minutes no matter how tempting it is". They include lots of variations for most recipes. Most importantly, the recipes are very weeknight: A lot of them are pretty quick to prepare, very tasty, and don't necessarily involve a billion different steps and sub-recipes.

Veganomicon is the grown-up version of Vegan with a Vengeance. Not its momma but the grown-up post punk herself. Still the same intelligent, clever and witty writing and the same mind-blowingly creative recipes but this time there is some very helpful information on kitchen necessities, both cookware and pantry staples, basic information on how to prepare different types of produce, some very grown-up and organized menus and the layout is beautifully refined. Much like I am trying to be i...more

wanna-be vegans;
With baited breath, I awaited the delivery of this book. It came and I was...a little disappointed. After her previous two cookbooks, I was expecting something ... more? Look - this book has everything you expect from the PPK (see their website:http://www.theppk.com/): the listing of basic ingredients needed for one's pantry; basic instructions for how to cook grains, beans, vegetables; well-written recipes and some beautiful pictures.

Not a vegan, but certainly have cut down on all forms of saturated fat and upped the vegetable, fruit, and whole grain intake. As vegetarian Alice Waters said, it's what you eat, not what you don't eat. Steph is a wonderful resource for all things vegan and she was the inspiration for me looking into a solid vegan cookbook. I want to be able to create something hearty and real - not relying on the scurry to Whole Foods for the lonely Field Roast....

I think this is going to be a keeper rather than just a borrow from the library cookbook. I read the introduction and found it amusing just as I did in Vegan Cupcakes take over the World. And just tide me over until I could get to the grocery store I read the icons section, stocking the pantry and kitchen tools. I always find it interesting, what each cook feels is necessary to have an equipped kitchen and pantry.
So, on to the good stuff. I made my first recipe last night, the Chickpea-N...more

This is a phenomenal cookbook for anyone who likes to cook and eat delicious food, vegan or vegetarian or BBQ-snarfer. The whole section on how to cook vegetables is worth the price alone (I had no idea how amazing roasted green beans were, for example) and the Simple Seitan recipe is a streamlined (and yummier) version of the one in Vegan With A Vengeance.

Even though I'm a pretty liberal vegetarian who loves dairy and sometimes doesn't mind if a recipe contains chicken stock, I'm totally interested in vegan recipes. I think that because I'm still an omnivore of sorts it gives me a different set of standards by which to judge vegan recipes. I have to say, the recipes in this book blew me away! I regularly make the tomato-roasted garlic- navy bean- rice soup, as well as the "snobby joe" sandwiches. The steps are always really clear, so if...more

This is also a vegan cookbook that I only just received. I am working on testing the recipes in it, seeing which ones I like, marking the ones I don't with devil horns, etc. This process takes me forever, especially since my boy wonder does most of the cooking around the house. However, the first recipe I tried from the Veganomicon was a sad disaster. It was for a Spinach-Noodle Kugel. I should have known; I've never been a fan of Jewish cuisine because it has always seemed to be a mixture of bl...more

I haven't had the chance to make nearly as many recipes as I'd like to from this book yet, but I'm giving it a tentative five stars and will amend that if necessary.
I tried to test a variety of recipes from different sections of the book so I could get a good overall feel for it. If there's a dud in this book, I ain't found it yet!
I especially enjoy the additions of unique ingredients and textures that give the recipes more complex flavors.

I've read the introduction, about the icons, stocking the pantry and kitchen equipment. That was all really to tide me over until I could get to the grocery store. The first recipe I've tried is the Chickpea-Noodle Soup on page 139. Delish!! Many of the recipes have tips. I found the tips in this one very helpful. The recipe calls for soba noodles, which I love, but are only good in soup if you eat it all that day. I can't eat a whole pot of soup in one day so I took their advice and subs...more

i started cooking vegan b/c my son has a dairy allergy (and we don't eat much meat anyhow). started w/ the cupcake book & VWAV and my husband gave this one to me for Christmas.
isa just never strikes out. the cholent was great. the yuca/sweet potato/black bean tortillas were great. the potato-kale enchiladas? yep, great. we weren't huge fans of the lentil-cauliflower curry or french lentil soup w/ tarragon and th...more

I am experimenting with veganism. I am already vegatarian, but occassionally eat eggs/milk/fish. Cheese is my downfall. But I've heard wonderful things about Isa and Terry, so had to start my exploration with them. They write descriptively, have lovely recipies that only occasionally call for ingredients I would have a difficult time locating, and they include equipment and resources as well. Its winter, so I'm currently focused on the soup section, and am beginning to get the hang of my ow...more

All the food and ethics of food writing that I am absorbing right now has caused me to take a hard look for the first time at what we as Americans are raised to eat and 'how' all that food really gets to our table...and at what expense. So as an experiment I decided to try eating as a vegan for 30 days. This cookbook has made that transition surprisingly easy. I still get to cook delicious food, only now I don't feel like going into a food coma or immediately gain ten pounds once the meal is o...more

Veganomicon just doesn't seem as polished as VWAV. I feel like maybe the authors got a little overambitious here. Recipes are too long and involved for my taste, and it seems like they tried too hard to include everything (i.e. "We know you know how to make guacamole, but here's a recipe anyhow!). The font is too small, the pages are too crammed, and the result is me feeling overwhelmed. But Isa & Terry are so funny -- the recipes are so much fun to read! Others who have this book sho...more

I got this book a few weeks ago and I love it. Every recipe I've made from it so far is absolutely delicious. Jillian has made some of the deserts and they are also delicious. Most of the recipes have a gourmet feel without being too difficult to make. Not to mention, many of the recipes are designed so that you can purchase all of the ingredients at a conventional grocery store. That's pretty convenient.

I admit I haven't read each recipe word for word... but I read everything else!
This is a fantastic cookbook if you are any of the following, or better yet a combination:

-a city dweller (lots of tips for dealing with small spaces and avoiding heavy groceries to carry home)
-health conscious
-interested in trying new foods
-hungry
-a fan of veggies
-a fan of beans
-a fan of baked goods or chocolate

I admit it's a little alarming to encounter mildly foul language while trying to cook a recipe, but otherwise this book is great. It's very informative. I was going to say it's like the Bible of vegan cooking, but the foul language forces me to change my comparison. Can I say it's the textbook of vegan cooking? Well, it does look alot like a textbook (sort of boring-looking, really), but texts never include swear words. Soooo.... it's just a unique and alarming but excellent cookbook.

A great comprehensive vegan cookbook that has something for everyone. I have made quite a few of recipes, but everytime I flip through it I see something new, yummy and interesting that I want to try. It has some great tips and recipes for beginners as well as some fancy shmancy recipes to make for a dinner party. I liked "Vegan with a Vengeance" but I think they really stepped it up with this one. A definite must-own for your vegan cookbook library.

I've had this for a couple months now and the wife and I have tried many of the recipes. Most of them are great and I don't know what I do without this! The book has a great intro section, including "how to stock a vegan kitchen", "how to cook a grain", "how to cook a vegetable", that has really helped with the basics as we veganize our lives. This is vegan must have, and I recommend to anyone who loves good food and wants to try something different.
