Individually there might be one or two flaws, but overall these four annuals were great examples of what's possible with the Ultimate story-lines. The Ultimates and Spider-man had easily the best storylines, heavy issues with for one and light-hearted character development for the other (Guess which went where?). Following-up on Rogue and Gambit was an excellent idea and phew, man, how it worked out seems a lot more devastating than the ol' absorption of Carol Danvers trick. Fantastic Four's lef ...more

This is a forgettable collection of stories, but not offensively so. It consists of four stand-alone tales, united only by the general time period in which they were written. The Fantastic Four story is the best of the bunch, with Jae Lee imagining the Inhumans to look eery and.. inhuman, for lack of a better word. It's the best visual interpretation of the Inhumans that I've seen, and it's a shame the story underneath the pictures is so lackluster.

Ultimate Annuals Volume 1 is a decent sampler of some of the more popular comics in the Marvel universe. Featuring four stand-alone stories from The Fantastic Four, X-Men, Spiderman and the Ultimates, the reader gets to experience the strengths and weaknesses of each writer and set of artists in the Ultimate universe.

First up, is the Fantastic Four, where the Human Torch falls in love with a girl (read: meets a hot chick) from a land where everyone has superhero powers. It features the best art

Once I got to read it, I got through it in one sitting. This is a compilation of annual issues of four series set in the Ultimates universe of Marvel (where the heroes are recast as teens). The stories felt a bit short, and in the case of the Fantastic Four, it felt like a rushed story: too short and too abrupt. I liked the Ultimates story best; the Spider-Man one was nice and sweet. Overall, I think fans will likely enjoy this collection. But it may leave you wanting more.

Ultimate Spidey was reliably strong, but the others were missable at best.
