PRIME TIME SUSPECT. (2007). Alicia Gimenez-Bartlett. **1/2.
Our Spanish mystery writer takes on the scurrilous press concerned with the world of the rich and famous. Unfortunately, the subjects of their concern have decided to get even with the organizers of this world by killing off their key spokesmen. The series team of Petra Delicado and her sidekick Fermin Garzon are assigned the case of the murder of one of the writers for a popular magazine series that deals primarily with the gossip surro

More like 2.5. I definitely think something was lost in translation. I didn't like the way the sentences felt, or the way the narration moved along. Maybe a better translation would make for a better review??

Most police departments have a team or two of elite detectives; for the Barcelona station, the stars are detectives Moliner and Rodriguez. When a celebrity is killed, they are moved to that very visible case; meanwhile, their current assignment of investigating a murdered gossip columnist is passed on to Inspector Petra Delicado and her partner, Sergeant Fermin Garzon.

The investigation isn't an easy one. The journalist, Ernesto Valdes, made many enemies as he revealed the more unsavory details

#4 in the Barcelona 40 something police Inspector Petra Delicado and her 50 something partner Sgt. Fermin Garzon mystery series. Starts with the death of a detested television journalist specializing in muckraking which becomes increasingly more complicated as it becomes tied in with another murder case resulting in Petra and Fermin working with another inspector and his partner as well as flying back and forth between Barcelona and Madrid plus throwing in Petra's personal issues and the surpise ...more

This is the third book in the Petra Delicado mystery series. Because I gave a "5 stars" rating, I feel that I need to explain why I consider the series to be more unique, funny, and thoughtful than other mysteries.

Prime Time Suspect is my favorite of Gimenez-Bartlett's three books, partly because I have gotten to know the characters in her other novels (Dog Day; Death Rites). Still, each book stands alone and it is not necessary to read the others in order to understand who the characters are.

Very idiosyncratic and well-paced. Interesting police protagonists, which is not all that common. Petra Delicado (love that name) and Sgt Garzon are one of the most grittingly engaging detective teams I've come across. It is no mean feat to get me interested in the investigators' private lives; that's usually poison.

That word 'gritty' - not enough to rub your nose raw, but to give the entire story texture.

And I didn't figure out the killer by page 12.

It's the second involving and enjoyable b

Peccato.

Just checked this out from the public library, I was desperate for something to read as I did not have internet or computer access for almost a week.

It was a really nice surprise, one of my favorite genres, police murder mystery, but the characters are surprising and their descriptions of Spain and food make me want to go to Madrid.

Interestingly enough, I did not think it was the best murder mystery, but totally love the detectives Petra Delicado and her partner Fermin Garzon.

The characters are shallow and somewhat predictable. The only thing that kept me going was what drives every mystery, the plot....which in the end wasn't as satisfying as I had hoped. Also, the translation leaves a lot to be desired. It seems that some of the conversational innuendos were lost in translation.

Loads of fun to read -- by volume three of the series, Gimenez-Barlett knows her characters as well as they know one another, and she writes them with great affection, illuminating their wards as brilliantly as she does their proudest features.

Inspector and Sergeant go between Barcelona and Madrid tracking down a murderer as bodies pile up around them. Some attractive, funny and interesting characters, contrasts between lifestyle of the two cities of interest. But not a very compelling story, I thought.
