This book was written in response to the recent Steve Jobs bios that focus heavily on Jobs' difficult personality and social skills. The author was one of Jobs' right-hand men and focuses mostly on his business acumen. The author largely avoids being an apologist for Jobs personal quirks, except notably in a section that rationalizes his lack of philanthropic activities.

Overall, the book is a good, quick overview of Jobs' product- and innovation-oriented approach. It was very interesting to find...more

The Steve Jobs Way: iLeadership for a New Generation by Jay Elliot was chosen by Soundview Executive Book Summaries as one of the Top 30 Business Books of 2011.

THE SOUNDVIEW REVIEW:

Let’s face it, there may be no other single executive whose work has received more attention (more positive attention, at least) than former Apple CEO Steve Jobs. The impact of Jobs’ decision to step down sent shockwaves throughout the tech industry and caused consternation among Apple shareholders as the source of so...more

If you are a Steve Jobs's fan then this book is a must. It gives a good insight on the inside of apple, and how this greater than life figure annoyed most people around him to get apple's product to perfection. A product Czar who worries about most meticulous detail and an entrepreneur who worried only about the consumer experience. A leader who was at times unreasonable, but never forgot to say a word of thank you or show gratitude to everyone who contributed to any of Apple's produc...more

This is an entertaining book, especially for fans of Apple, but it can also be an frustrating book. At first, it begins to read less like a book on leadership, and more like a memoir of sorts of Elliot's time at Apple. Then it turns into what amounts to unabashed praising of Steve Jobs, Apple, and their products. Even when he offers criticism, he only does so to identify a particular lesson learned that pays off later. It almost feels as if Apple's PR department (or even Jobs himself) vetted thi...more

Insightful book. While it's written in a "Tenants of Steve Jobs" fashion, there's some good background/biographical info for those who are more interested in Steve and how he did things at Apple. That would be my only criticism of the book... it's kind of "in-between" a biographical recount of Steve's rule at Apple and a self help/tenants book so has some flaws doing both. Because it's not meant to be a straight biography, the story jumps around a bit so if you don't know a bit of the history of...more

I found this book very irritating because it reads like a PR release than a book on leadership lessons.

Steve Jobs is hailed as a great leader and wonderful visionary whose vices were either presented as virtues or a weak rationalization was offered to do away with them.

"Steve was..., but he..."

"Granted..., but..."

"Sure..., but..."

At one point the author says: "Yes, he could be difficult, but look at the results." (!!!)

If you find the warped reality of Apple fanboys to be annoying, then this book...more

An interesting biography of Steve Job's active adult life as co-founder and later CEO of Apple. I found the descriptions and anecdotes of Steve Job's leadership and management style interesting, but not compelling. Highly successful, highly innovative and inspirational (most of the time), Steve was definitely a genius in his field -- the un-disputed product czar of his lifetime as Jay Eliot puts it. Although I admire his achievements and have bought many of the products he pioneered from idea to...more

Pretty comprehensive book about how Steve Jobs functioned at career-wise and I'm thinking this is more credible than Walter Issacson's book since Jay Elliot was literally with Jobs most of the time at Apple.

Its another Steve book with a bit of more information but not outstanding as I though. Also next year Steve's authorized biography will be out, thats something I am looking fwd for. I am also a bit surprised by two things in the book, which kind of reduced the stars (i rate 2/5)

1. No word , forward, letter etc from Steve. The author claimed to be right hand the the second person (apart from Tim Cook) who understood steve well. And zero personal text from Steve.

2. He gave two examples how he impl...more

An insider's account of Apple definitely left me wanting more. This book is meant to supplement and add perspective to the hundreds of books written about Steve Jobs. I appreciated Jay Elliot's perspective even though he did a lot of cheerleading for Jobs and didn't give him much criticism--even when there was some criticism clearly due to Jobs style of leadership.

This is a gripping book which is very well-written. It was difficult to get a sense of chronology from the author. He kept jumping ba...more

“The Steve Jobs Way” tries to capture parts of the life of a “boy genius” who earned his first million when he was twenty three, ten million when he turned twenty four and over 200 million when he was twenty five.Told from the perspective of a person who had known Steve Jobs for almost 30 years this book encompasses the Steve Jobs’ way of looking at things.

From “Why join the navy if you can be a pirate” to understanding how the passion and detail for the product ruled Steve Jobs has been very w...more

I really enjoyed reading the insight that the author has on "The Steve Jobs Way" of doing things, whether it is good or bad. The book also gave me a glimpse of how far Apple has come, with Steve's guidance, it has become the biggest tech company in the world.

Overall I really enjoy reading it, as a result of that I gained a better understand of how Steve Jobs and Apple operate (to a certain extend). Needless to say, there are many things other companies can learn from Apple.

The book, is however v...more

It was like reading Sherlock Holmes. Steve Jobs the Sherlock Holmes of Silicon Valley. And of course Jay Elliot as Watson told the reader their adventures at Apple, a very close observation of the way Steve Jobs made the revolutionary devices.

Through the stories we can see what Steve's beliefs about how products should be and how he built the products and the team to make that kind of product delivered to customers. I think these are things we can learn from him.

Steve had detail observation of...more

This was a quick and interesting read about how Steve Jobs worked and became successful with Apple twice. This book shares his secrets to success in business. He has an idea for a product and is relentless about making it happen. He hires talented people who have the same can-do attitude and they make great products everyone will enjoy. His ideas about computers, music, and communication via cell phone have been revolutionary and he created intuitive, innovative, and amazing products around thes...more

This is an interesting and entertaining book. (Kudos to a former Apple exec for using the word "wild-assed" in a sentence!). It is interesting in the way that Insanely Great or Accidental Empires was interesting. A fun insider's look at Apple from humble start-up to Billion-dollar behemoth.

If you're looking for tips on adopting a Jobs-Style of Leadership, or ways to create innovation in stagnant, bureaucratic organizations, I'm not sure this is your book. The author does reference "iLeadership P...more

The biography is about the iconic leader Mr. Steve Jobs who as an entrepreneur started an organization with the more technically gifted neighbor kid Mr. Steve Woznaik to give shape to a billion dollar empire (as of today its net worth is around US $222 bn.) The story has long been told and retold in today's generation about how he is sometimes difficult to work with, how he was shown the boot from his own company and his comeback. Jay Elliot has written quite an appealing piece to the general au...more

This book largely consists of the author sharing stories and adventures he had with Steve Jobs and deriving leadership lessons along the way. Takeaway: Steve Jobs accomplished so much because of his driving, relentless passion to create beautifully-designed, user-friendly electronics for consumers. The author does cover lessons he learned from Jobs, e.g., Jobs’ meticulous attention to detail, Jobs’ desire to have control of both the hardware and software to create the best product, etc. But all...more

Written and based on Steve's life before his passing, this insiders, colleague written view of his morals, practices, and often stubborn-for-the-best-user-experience attitude is an excellent observational based reading on the work life of Steve Jobs. Given the explosion of since-released biographies, I'm interested in "Steve Jobs" (Walter Isaacson) as a comparison point for his life as reflected by many others. "The Steve Jobs Way" can be recommended as a glimpse into the man behind the Mac.

I just completed this book, which I originally believed would be a great book because I think Steve Jobs was/is an amazing man. As I come to read this book, I found it to be more about the history of Apple and how Steve was involved in it. I ended finding this book very unfascinating but I do recommend it for anyone who is interested in Technology, Apple, history or a combination of the three. Overall I would give this book a three out of five stars. I do not find it a must read.

This the complete story of Steve Jobs and his creations at Apple. It's quite an interesting story and I came away feeling like I understood how Apple got to be the outstanding product line it is today.

These are the Steve Jobs principles:
Be passionate about each project you work on.
Be driven by an opportunity and create a product for it.
Always be open to talent who can help.
Do your best to make the product intuitive, so a user's manual isn't needed.
Be really honest with yourself about your produc...more

Sayangnya saya rasa penerjemahannya kurang begitu bagus.

My first Steve Jobs biography and it was overwhelming how Steve Jobs changed the world. His attention to detail, his marketing prowess, and ability to zone in on the needs of customers has me completely baffled. I think that reading this book will help to mold how I approach my own business. It is apparent that Jay Elliot idolizes Steve Jobs, but I will say that there were times in this book that it came across as a bit too evangelical.

Somewhat bittersweet that I finished this book on the day Steve Jobs passed away. The book itself is an observer’s view of Steve and doesn’t really draw out his leadership traits in any way that you couldn’t already have figured out without reading the book. It corrects a few historic urban legends and maps out the Steve at Apple timeline in great detail, but aside from that there’s very little new information. Just a gushing (and fitting) reflection of working with a genius and the ultimate pro...more

More of a biography of Jobs and an opportunity to slather on praise than a dissection of his business leadership skills and how to apply them in your own environment. Unnecessarily critical of every company that isn't Apple, as if they are the only good company who have ever existed. It was frustrating to get past the ass-kissing, but occasionally worthwhile as it could frame your thinking somewhat to consider how to improve your leadership.

This retelling of Apple and specifically Steve Job from a close associate was very interesting and inspiring. It's a very current book including the introduction of the iPad. I would have like to see heard more about Steve's time with NeXT but I'm guessing the reason for the lack of detail is that Jay Elliot stayed at Apple when Steve founded NeXT and hence had little direct experience with Steve's role and times there.
Dave
Sorry, I found this book to be too full of information about the author and his relationship with Jobs, almost to the point of being self-serving. While there is good insight into some of Jobs' leadership qualities, the anecdotes are very Apple/Computer development specific to be of broader value. I learned some good stuff, but nowhere near as much as I had hoped to when I started the book.
