The book is full of mystery, family, wine, death, hate, fear and some love. A lot of twists and the end was a surprise to me.
I especially liked the Italian grandmother; my grandmother spelled it with one n, Nona.
This is the first book I have read by Christina Dodd and found it fast moving with lots of twists and turns. It is the second book of the series but still able to be read on it's own.
I did not find it "romantic" as in some books I have read but a different love in that one cares.
I will add when Chloe drove through West Texas, it was described as a god-forsaken place with tarantulas and dust storms. True, we do have sandstorms and tarantulas but I love the area even though I now live in the Land of Lakes of Minnesota. When Chloe had a flat tire, she knew a Texas man would stop and help her. I will add that I used to say, "Drive to West Texas from Austin and people pull over to the shoulder so you can pass; when you drive to Houston from Austin to go east, they pull more into the center lane". I lived in the Austin area, Round Rock, for ten years.
I will give it a 4 star because of the actions, mystery and so many surprises. I look forward to Betrayal, the next book in the Bella Terra series.

This is the second book in the series. I liked the twists that have emerged in this story line. The book flows at a fast pace keeping your interest. The 3rd book Betrayal at Bella Terra is due out April 3, 2012.

That Christina Dodd. Even when there are several tropes that I usually hate in a book, her writing weaves it all together in a way that makes me read the whole darn book.

I rate this at 4 1/2 out of 5. I thought the mystery twist of why the famous bottle of wine was so desirous was a stroke of genius. It made this book stand out from the first in the series but still be part of the series. I loved the relationship between Eli and Chloe. He finally thinks he ought to be doing something with her, so a few weeks after her arrival at Bella Terra, Eli checks in with Chloe, only to find her a disaster, the guest house wrecked, her writing at a standstill. He starts teasing her with a local mystery legend and she races out the door to spend the day with him. As he’s showing her around, they come across a gruesome discovery and a set of clues to a mystery even more dangerous than the old legend. They decide to keep some of it to themselves, unsure who to trust with it – it’s all wrapped up in the same feud that got Eli’s grandmother assaulted and his sister-in-law nearly killed earlier.

Eli gets some bad financial news, just as he’s starting to make progress with Chloe and it pushes him into disclosing family secrets to her and emotional declarations from both of them. Eli asks her to take leap of faith and marry him – and when his Nonna figures out what he’s been up to, it’s just barely less dangerous than the man looking for Chloe and the secrets she’s been digging up.

I feel like I could go at this review three different ways because this felt like three really disparate elements of style that didn’t come together all that well. There was the mystery (quite good), suspense (okay) and the romance (flat) and the “glue” – Eli – that was supposed to keep the story together in this installment in the series was completely inconsistent.

This is the second in Dodd’s series revolving around a missing bottle of vintage wine that was bestowed upon Eli’s grandfather when he was born by an area vintner. The first book revealed that a rival wine-making family thought they should have been given the bottle and were willing to go to drastic measures to get it. The bottle remained lost though, since Eli’s grandfather suffered from dementia and never told anyone where he put it before he died. Part of Eli’s effort to woo Chloe is his telling her all about a local bootlegging operation and a missing man and when he takes her to the old still, they find something that makes the missing bottle even more valuable and dangerous. There’s clue-gathering, poking around in the dirt and dust and lying to the cops – all great mystery components and there are plenty of whodunits and whydidtheys later on too.

There were plenty of opportunities for suspense and some good places for action, but they didn’t really have much punch for me. The one long scene that really did work was of just Chloe and her own reactions – as soon as Eli was brought into it, it stopped feeling authentic.

Chloe was a fun character in spite of what some of Dodd saddled her with. She’s in her early twenties, a New York Times bestselling mystery writer with an incredibly rich father who’s been trying to fix her up with men and on top of that, she’s tiny, pretty and blonde – although by the time she meets Eli she’s had an ill-advised haircut and looks like a “dandelion” with some red streaks. I found her to be pretty easy to relate to – she runs around in her pajamas when she’s writing, hair sticking up all over, a bra draped over the couch. She’s smart and funny and thinks out loud.

The romance in the book was the biggest problem because while Chloe was fine, Eli wasn’t and I never bought their relationship. They really only spent a week together before he spilled his big family secrets (from his mother’s side) and he demanded she marry him because she loved him and it wasn’t much later that he had his epiphany about her. Up to that point in the story, he was as deep as a puddle and about as interesting. He was rude, showed no real romantic interest in Chloe and other than seeing him with his family or moaning about how horrible things were, there wasn’t anything to him. Honestly, I couldn’t even tell you what he looks like. The sex (I can’t even call them love) scenes didn’t really have any chemistry or oomph.

My Summary: I wouldn’t read this as a standalone – along with the first in the series, Secrets of Bella Terra, this is more like a mini-series and the whole thing ends on a cliffhanger which won’t be resolved until the last book, Betrayal in Bella Terra is released in April, 2012. Eli and Chloe’s relationship didn’t work at all for me, even though I liked her, so don’t read this looking for a great romance. The mystery is interesting and is turning out to be really the only reason to continue.

The heroine, Chloe, was engaging. And I enjoyed the description of her hair. So a solution comes along. Mr. Conte, a millionaire and somewhat Eli's business partner wants him to marry his daughter and give him grandchildren. Eli comes from a good family so he offers to pay ofrf all of Eli's debt if he can get his daughter to marry him. Bad choice? Yeah maybe.

Eli is very serious and the type of guy that does for everyone else but holds himself behind high walls that no one can come through and get to know the real him. But Chloe finds the cracks.

Chloe Conte is younger than him, she's independent, she's adventurous, she's an author. Just finished her first book, had massive success, and is now struggling with the stress of writing a second book that would be as good. Her father offers her to spend time with Eli and enjoy beautiful California to get over her writers block.

Chloe is onto her dad's scheming about getting her married, but Eli seems genuine and for the most part he is. I liked that throughout their relationship he was *mostly* honest and himself. There were only a few pushes along the way that he had to do to get her to agree to marry him. But at a certain point, I just got pissed off that he waited that long to come clean. Should've been sooner.

There is still mystery and suspense! There is still a missing bottle of wine, yes the same one that seemed to have started the Di Luca problem in book one, but now we find out there's more to that bottle than the old wine it contains. It has something else of value in it. And people are willing to kill for it.

This was a good installment in the series and in my opinion better than the first one because I liked the characters better. I am looking forward to the next book since it will be about the youngest Di Luca, and he seems to have a dark past hidden somewhere!(less)

2nd book just as good as book 1. Might even be better! Eli makes a contract with Conte to marry his daughter and he will in turn pay his debts, since his accountant took off with the money.. But still someone is after the bottle of wine that Massimo had given Anthony Di Luca way back when.. I liked this one better than the first in the series-Secrets at Bella Terra. It has a good mystery and pacing. I liked the couple in this one. Although they seemed an unlikely pair. I was concerned at first because he seemed to be interested more in the deal he made with her father but as he got to know Chloe he fell in love. The ending gave us just enough hint of the next to make me wish it was going to be published this year.

Wow i love ms. Dodd's writing skills as she keeps me thrilled and entertained for the whole of her books with twists turns, heartaches and male stupidity (not to mention female forgiveness for said stupidity)... but i gotta say i really really REALLY hate her ability to write a cliffhanger so steep that one step off the edge will leave you plummeting into the darkest canyon imaginable while waiting for the nest book in the series... UGH! April really? i cant wait that long!

This was a fun read. The close-mouthed, controlled hero has to finally let go. I enjoyed how the mystery continued. The various suspects kept me waiting till the end to see who was the villian but even then, the mystery continued to the next book. I continue to love Sarah and the relationship of her grandsons with each other and her.

I always enjoy Dodd's novels. Her characters are smart, funny and complex. Eli DiLuca and Chloe Robinson are no exception. It was nice to read a book that really focused on the relationship between the two main characters while still moving the Bella Terra mystery story forward. I am anxious to read the third novel to see if the missing bottle of wine is finally found and to see who will capture the heart of the youngest DiLuca brother.

Great story of man wooing woman for all the wrong reasons. Throw in some wine and an exciting mystery and this is a great read! A wonderful combination of mystery, love, and sexiness, can't go wrong with that. My only problem is that the conclusion of this trilogy isn't out for six months. Patience is not a virtue I have.

So this was really enjoyable. I was a little weirded out by the set up from the first book, but it played out well... except I laughed out loud when Eli proposed. There was enough mystery to make me wonder what will happen next and keep me reading. Chloe was a fun girl and easy to root for... I liked her better than Brooke from book 1. Eli was a massive alpha-male, with a communication problem and I-cannot-love syndrome... my favorite kind of hero! I am looking forward to Noah's book.

I read this book out of order (I hate it when I do that) so 3 stars from me is really pretty good since I often felt a bit lost for parts of the book altho it mostly stood on its own. I also did not really conect with the male character and questioned his complete emotional about-face with the heroine. I will bother to check out the first book in this series tho.
