Stephen King, Everything's Eventual (Scribner, 2002)
Rumors of Stephen King's demise have been greatly exaggerated. 2002 is gearing up to be another highly productive year for King, and he starts us off with his first short story collection since 1993, Everything's Eventual. It sure is nice to know that King doesn't feel the need to turn everything into a novel, and while his short stories have gotten longer, they still pack the punch that the early tales did. However, they pack it in a more li...more

Summary: In his introduction to Everything's Eventual, horror author extraordinaire Stephen King describes how he used a deck of playing cards to select the order in which these 14 tales of the macabre would appear. Judging by the impact of these stories, from the first words of the darkly fascinating "Autopsy Room Four" to the haunting final pages of "Luckey Quarter," one can almost believe King truly is guided by forces from beyond.

I read this book when it first came out, long before 1408 was turned into a feature-length film starring (somewhat unpredictably) John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson. The story is excellent, creepy in a disorienting fashion. It lacks the preachy overtones added by the film, and the weird subplot about the author's daugther. I have learned to become increasingly concerned when people are allowed to adapt King's short stories, more often than not what they are forced to add to make time just confuse...more

Collection of short stories. "1408" was made into a movie.
I tend to avoid short stories. And I stopped reading Stephen King after a succession of books - Misery, Thinner, The Stand, It, Needful Things, Pet Sematary - I thought were just not as good as his earlier books.
But I found out the movie "1408" was based on a Stephen King short story. When a movie is based on a book, I like to read the book first. But since I'd missed that, and I liked the movie, I wanted ...more

Many of these stories lacked the punch that I had remembered feeling reading, say, Nightmares and Dreamscapes and particularly Skeleton Crew. Of course, I was ten or twelve and understimulated, having a waning diet of Roald Dahl and book order specials from Scholastica. Despite King self-lauding the deck-of-cards order chosen for these shorts, the book gets off to a mostly slow start. The weaker stories are preceded with 'introductions' that read more like apologies for rote storyt...more

This was the first Stephen King book I ever Read. A friend of mine told me that Stephen Kings short stories were fantastic. I very much enjoyed the short stories, but I found them to be a little predictable. It may also be that many of the stories in this book were featured on the sci fi channel show "nightmares and dreamscapes". and while reading them, I couldnt help but picture the people from the show. Unfortunately, the show wasnt very good. but Kings stuff never transfers we...more

This was a great collection of short stories; I definately enjoyed the change of pace from King's usual long novel. The collection also had a little bit of everything - a classic "ghost" story in 1408, a gangster story in The Death of Jack Hamilton, and so on. My favorite story was Lunch at the Gotham Cafe; I loved that by the end of the story I didn't know what I was most horrified by - the crazy maitre d (something truly scary) or the fact that the narrators ex-wi...more

This is my first experience with Mr. King, perhaps the most prolific author of the century. It was always the fact that he wrote so much that I wanted to read him so little.
With the movie 1408, that all innocently came to an end. A friend lent me this book right after seeing the movie, so that I may read the short story version from which it originated. Just a short story, 30 pages or so.
I did. Then I read the story after that. All of a sudden, something just clicked. ...more

This one of the books I picked up just before my ship pulled out n an extended deployment in 2003. I really enjoyed the book which suprised me I guess because I had never read any of King's other novels. I mean I had seen some of the TV and movie versions, but never read any of the books. It was in one of the short stories in here. "Sisters of Eluria," that I was introduced to the character of Roland Deschain, The Gunsliger. I was intrigued enough to eventually borrow and then get ...more

The only other Stephen King book I've read is On Writing, which I really liked, so I've been meaning to read his other books. A friend let me borrow this one because he said it's a great introduction to Mr. King's writing. It was very good--a collection of short stories with little introductions before each telling where the idea for the story came from.
The collection contained some great ghost stories, which always interest me. I especially loved the one about the little boy who meets the ...more

I loved certain stories in this collection: "Autopsy Room Four," "The Road Virus Heads North," "In the Deathroom," and the fantastic "The Little Sisters of Eluria." Some of the stories, however, were easy, stupid, and a waste of my time. Stephen King is arguably one of the best WRITERS alive; I say that as he is an artist, a master of words, etc.

I saw the ads for 1408 and picked up the book at an airport last month. I've read his short stories before and was a big fan of the pan horror short story collection as a kid but this was a disappointment. The first 5 or 6 stories were boring and unoriginal for the most part with no suspense or intrigue characteristic of his other work. I skipped the rest of the stories at this point and read 1408. 1408 builds well and is more in line with my expectations but it seems half finished as the st...more

This book has many little stories in it. I really loved a couple of them, and others were hard to get into. Some of the stories were gory, and others scared the witts out of me! One of my favorite stories in this book was about a little boy. He incountered the Devil.
In this sort story, the boy goes fishing, and has an unusual encounter. This book was very descriptive. Stephen King is awesome at describing the look in the devil's eyes, with the piercing yellow glow. I could not put this book...more

I picked up this book mostly to read 1408 and The Man in the Black Suit. I had been told 1408 was pretty creepy, and I also wanted to read it before I watched the film. It succeeded in creeping me out, though I'm not exactly sure why. The Man in the Black Suit won an O. Henry Award awhile back. Again, I'm not exactly sure why--though it has some interesting descriptions of the devil.
On the whole, there were some stories with great ideas, great concepts. But they were hard to enjoy because my...more

A book of short stories. I only bought it for Little Sisters of Eluria, which I'm glad I read. Anything about Roland makes for good reading. I would happily read about him going shopping for socks. This book is probably getting more publicity at the moment because it contains 1408 and they recently made a movie out of that. I think the stories I enjoyed best were Autopsy Room Four and Riding The Bullet. Stephen King just has this great way of letting us really know a ...more

I'm about 100 hundred pages in and I'm afraid this one's going back on the shelf for a while. I'm not actively disliking what I'm reading, I'm just not engaged with the characters and situations enough to sit with them for forty some-odd pages. Given that this is the second 21th century Stephen King book I've had gripes with, it's really making me nervous about whether I'll enjoy the last two Dark Tower books. I may pick this one back up eventually, but I'm just ready to move on to other stuf...more

Another stellar collection of stories from King that came out earlier in the decade, EE is a lot of fun to read. Pretty much all of these stories are A's or B's, with the exception of the slight clunker that opens the collection, Autopsy Room Four. King reminds us once again why he's such a popular and talented writer -- he doesn't simply work us over with chills and thrills; he also tickles our funny bone, challenges our minds and frequently touches the heart, particularly with offerings like R...more

Crazy-scary. One of the best collections of short stories I've ever read. Of course we all know 1408 was turned into a mediocre flick starring John Cusack and of course being a Stephen King story they butchered the plot until it hardly resembled the original but the story "1408" is so worth reading. Another worth reading is the story for which the book is named, "Everything's Eventual". It left me with a lot to think about afterwards. Overall, the entire book is a satisfying ...more
