MEG: A Novel of Deep Terror struck me again with Steve Alten's excellence in Sea Monster based horror. Possibly the next Peter Benchley? Jonas Taylor, an ex navy member, leaves the service after a freak accident on an exploration of the Mariana Trench 35,000 feet under water, that killed the two soldiers he was in the submersible with after he thought he saw a monster and made the ship rise too fast. His marrage had gone down the toliet after he became determined to discover more about the monst...more

An exploitation book if ever there was such a thing, this book has it all--flesh munching, science, blood, romance, guts, action, gore, technology, bone crunching, sinister antagonists and heroic protagonists. More or less every living thing in the Pacific Ocean--human and nonhuman alike--gets swallowed whole in a two week period.

This is a genuinely terrible book. It really is just a screenplay with more words. The characters are poorly developed, the writing is bad, the ending made me feel dumber for having read it.
BUT!
It is fun to read in much the same way Deep Blue Sea was a fun movie. If you don't expect anything more than a B movie with some funny lines and a shark that can sink a submarine you won't be disappointed. I'd say it is a good beach read but...well...giant shark.

Whoever still watches Jaws on the weekends on USA or TNT
I'm biased because of my long fascination with sharks, but this is still a pretty good book. It's more in depth with the shark than jaws, but less so with the characters. Don't compare it with Deep Blue Sea, one because Samual L Jackson probably won't play a role in the movie and two because it's much better. Deep Blue Sea's motive was to take a bunch of actors/actresses I liked and throw them into a blender full of crap.

This was one of the best books i've read in a long time. For a fictional book it was very hard to believe it wasn't true. Alten uses a great deal of discription and altered information to bring the megladons to life. Towards the end the book it got kind of grusome(way to much blood). But overall the book was excellent and I would recomend it to everyone

This book, while kind of a silly plot line, is highly entertaining and quite the adventure. While it seems like a huge 65 foot prehistoric shark couldn't start to inhabit shallow waters and strike terror onto beach-goers, Steve Alten makes it probable! Probably one of my favorite quick reads, you won't be able to put it down!

Thos eof you who know me - really know me - know that I have a passion for sharks and that my all-time favorite has got to be carcaridon megalodon, and the fact that someone else out there believes that they could still exist, as I do, and that they would be in the Marianas Trench, as I do, is incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Proof that I cannot not-purchase a book about a prehistoric shark that we THOUGHT was extinct, but is actually hanging out in the Mariana Trench, getting its heat-vent on.
I take it on ski trips, for when I'm so coked out from muscle exhaustion that I can't even make sense of Us Weekly.

Very fast paced, but ultimately stupid and unbelievable. The characters are paper thin and the plot hinges on actions that make little, if any sense.
That being said. It is a ride. Like another reviewer said, it's like the movie Deep Blue Sea. It's a B movie as a quick read.

I read this book quickly and easily. It's a bit ridiculous at the end, but still entertaining. I think I read somewhere that it'll be a movie. My opinion is it will be a B version of Jaws. This shark, the megalodon, is like Jaws on triple doses of steroids. Pretty cool.

Not really captivating enough to warrant a shining review, but it wasn't bad enough to harp on about. It's a quick read, but a read with underdeveloped characters and overly predictable plot twists. The only reason I read it was because the author came to our high school.

I read this book when I was 12 because I had an obsession with white sharks. I loved it at the time and now doubt I would find it as cool but I had to add it because I just discovered they are making it into a motion picture...and yes, I will be seeing the movie ;-)

This is basically Jaws, but bigger. A giant shark, thought to be extinct, is rediscovered and is really hungry. Great story, but you can tell it was written by someone who wanted to turn it into a movie and so it's a little over-action-packed and cheesy at times.

Outstanding novel. Horror, science fiction, and mystery all wrapped into a nice package. Alten has an amazing way of putting the reader into the scene creating a greater sense of dread. This is one of the best books I have read in many years.

If you like books about prehistoric sharks, this is definitely the one for you. It was good and kept me involved, but I wouldn't rush out to read it again and it did not solve or create any moral dilemmas for me. Ehhhh..... It was good.

fans of oversized monster stories
It's cheesy and not exactly a great example of literature at it's finest, but this is an extremely entertaining novel that is filled with some fun characters and one nasty Megalodon with a taste for puny humans.

I love Shark books. Anything with sharks in it is a good read to me. I don't know that the story is the best but it's got shark scenes in it (BIGGGGG HUGGGEEE shark) and so it was a awesome book to me!

I got as far as the giant shark leaping out of the ocean and attacking a helicopter.......I stopped then, because I don't need that kind of crazy shit in my life. Good book up until then though.

This book is the first book in a triology. It's really exciting and keeps you reading until you are done. It's like watching a real good action movie. This is the only books that Sam read.

How would a megalon shark survive the ice age? Alten tells of a reasonable possibility, and how the modern world would be affected with such a large, unpredictable predator in our seas.
