I have to admit that I AM a prude. I found this book a little embarrassing to read in public, but once I started, I really couldn't stop. It is an erotic novel, but it is extremely well-written. The book isn't quite in Oscar Wilde's style, but that can be attributed to the fact that he supposedly wrote this with several others.

Reading one heterosexual bed scene in the book, I was surprised with the fact that the scene was as long and explicit as those in my own books, with the only difference: the bedroom scenes in my books are wholly dedicated to male love; otherwise, the authors of Teleny could be authors of my homoerotic stories; but it must be said again that I’ve not read the book through, and most likely, some new surprises are waiting for me in the book--but not the ending, for we know that the ending is tragic...more
Overall I enjoyed the book. It was very graphic, and so not for the faint of heart. And by graphic I don't mean necessarily in the gaudy macabre way that a gorefest movie is graphic, but in the more sophisticated late 19th century way, where sexual or violent acts exist in sharp contrast to heightened language and luxurious prose style ment to mimic the surroundings of the leisure classes during that period. However, my initial impression of the book was unfavorable, because the author (supposed...more

Juu ja kaikenlaista pornografiaa on oikein jännä lukea julkisissa kulkuvälineissä.

Did Oscar Wilde write it? Who cares? You don't read this book because you want to check another title off your "I've read everything Oscar Wilde wrote" list. You read this book because it's a product of the times Oscar was living in. This is Victorian erotica/porn/literature! You'll learn just as much about the period from this book as anything written at that time, and along with the education, you'll get a few smiles and a few sniffles.

There's such a battle going on in my soul right now between acknowledging the very very obvious kitchy badness of this book and my interest in all things Oscar Wilde who was a very very lovely man.
This is really ridiculous pseudo-porn. It's often attributed to Wilde but I don't think he wrote it. The style is more redolent of a Wilde-olater. It presumably turned porn-starved gay men on back in the 19th century; it amused those who appreciated camp in the 1950s and 1960s; now it just seems stupid. A Wilde hoax...his name just used to sell books. A lot of pointless "burning" and "seething" by the male protagonist and his coveted beloved. Craptacular and a total waste of ...more
Teleny or the Reverse of the Medal (Illustrated gay erotic classic) by Oscar Wilde (2006)
it's so amazing that i want to read it again
It was difficult to get through the chapter that describes, in painful detail, the rape of a servant...claiming that she somehow got pleasure from the struggle(!) That being said, this was a beautifully honest, well-written account of how one man navigated through Victorian society while carrying out an all-consuming love affair with another man. Written by Wilde or not, this pseudo-erotic novel could make even the most progressive person blush in the twenty-first century.
It is not certain that this is by Oscar Wilde.

The best Victorian gay porn I've ever read.
Well, the only Victorian gay porn I've ever read. But who can say no to that? You can read it in an evening and it's a fantastic guilty pleasure that you can tell yourself is an academic study of historical eroticism=)

I don't know what it tells about me, but I liked it. It wasn't too profound or anything, but entertaining nevertheless. The characters were charming and the depiction was good.
An erotic gay novel attributed to Oscar Wilde. It's definitely not in the same vein as his other work, however, at least as far as wit goes. Nevertheless, very engaging and tragic.
So naughty! I couldn't put it down.

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was an Irish playwright, poet and author of numerous short stories and one novel. Known for his biting wit, he became one of the most successful playwrights of the late Victorian era in London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day. Several of his plays continue to be widely performed, especially The Importance of Being Earnest. As the result of a wide...more
