So I’m on a plane ride from Seattle to New York and wouldn’t you know it but I don’t bring enough books to read. Under normal circumstances I have a problem with overstocking my purse with reading material. This time the opposite is true. So I pull out anything I happen to have on hand, and most of it is simply terrible. I’m alternating between bad crazy books and bad depressing books in an effort to simply make the time go faster when I remember that a literary agent I know, who happens to

There have been a batch of these books lately. You know--girl discovers her incredible psychic powers and begins solving mysteries. Usually there's a kooky but wise relative with similar powers, or a quirky shop that she works in, and usually a cute boy to fall in love with.
Luckily, Elizabeth Cody Kimmel is a deft writer and her book stands on its own merits. Her characters are younger than usual--they're in 7th grade, so the boy angle isn't in play--at least not in this first volume More...

In middle school you want to fit in, you know, blend in with the crowd. Fitting in was anything but easy for Kat. Her mother was a medium and the kids at school teased her about it to no end. Before long, Kat herself realized that she too had the gift for speaking with spirits. Her only real friend was Jac, another school misfit who lost her ability to play the cello.

Seventh grade is hard enough, but when you're already struggling to find your niche in the popular crowd, it certainly doesn't http://www.goodreads.com/review/edit/295... for the cool kids to find out that your mom is a Medium. But the reality for Kat is that nothing escapes the eyes of Shoshanna, Brooklyn and their omnipresent "Satellite Girls," so she's just about ready to exile herself into the seventh circle of social ineptitude. But then she makes friends with the new "Cello

It's ghost whisperer for kids! I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the next one. Not as meaty as Cabot's Mediator series, but it's perfect for the age group.
Here's what I'll say in my booktalk:
What would you do if you suddenly started seeing people that aren't really there? Would you think you were going crazy? Seeing things? You wouldn't if you were Kat--you'd know that you'd inherited the gift of seeing ghosts. With a mother for a medium, Kat knows what's More...

Kat's mom is so embarrassing. A lot of kids say this, but Kat's mom is worst than most. She's a medium. As in, she sees dead people. And she helps them or she helps the living who want to contact them. It's totally a drag - Kat can't ever bring anyone home after school... not that she has any friends to bring home anyway. But just when she thinks she may have finally found a friend at school, Kat's medium powers kick in and she's thrust into the mystery of a musical ghost that haunts her school

The main character, whose mother is a medium, discovers on her 13th birthday that she too can see dead people. She is also trying to navigate the clicks at her new school. Her new best (and only) friend is a cello playing phenom, so both are misfits with special talents they must come to terms with and learn to accept. The writing has such strong voice. The author through her characters takes a poke at the Bible; especially considering this is a 4-6th grade book, seems heavy on agenda. A little

Kimmel, Elizabeth Cody. 2008. Suddenly Supernatural: School Spirit.

YA; I LOVED THIS BOOK! Main character, Kat, struggles with being a little abnormal. After meeting a new friend, Jac, a musical phenom, they open up to each other, revealing some big secrets. Kat's being a newly found ability to see dead people, Jac's being cursed with overwhelming stage fright. The two find themselves struggling with the challenges of teen life and embarking on a wild paranormal adventure. Fabulously written! A must-read!

Kat, a thirteen-year-old daughter of a medium, begins to see and hear from spirits herself. Normally a loner, and shunned in middle school, Kat befriends Jac, a gifted cellist. Both girls have trouble accepting and using their gifts, but Kat overcomes her fears and helps both girls come into their own, while helping a friend with the ghostly problems the novel presents. Good book for middle school-aged girls.

Very cute series about Kat a girl who just started seeing "ghosts". Her mother is a medium and now that Kat has turned 13 she discovers that she has the same "gift". In addition she meets Jac a cello prodigy.
The book are charming and funny as each girl stuggles with the expectation of their particular gifts and the choices they want to make about accepting their talents. The girls don't realize this parallel, but the author sure does, but handles it with great su More...

This book is about a girl who becomes a medium at her 13th birthday. Her mother is already a medium and works to help people with her gift. Kat, a 7th grader, is struggling to fit in and be "normal" at school. It is hard to be a normal 7th grader when the dead surround you looking for help at every turn. This book is about Kat learning to accept and be comfortable with who she is and learning to use her gift for good.

This was a cute little fast read about Kat, a girl who inherits her mother's gift of seeing ghosts. She learns from her mother, that the most of the ghost don't want to scare her, they just want help. She takes her mother's advice and decides to help a ghostly girl in her school library, who seems to have some unfinished business.

Layak ditunggu buku keduanya.

This was a fun story. It was a little predictable, but I think the kids will definitely enjoy it. You have the ghost story aspect, the adventure/mystery aspect and the coming of age aspect. What's not to like? Probably more girls than guys will pick this up. This is a 2010-11 Missouri Mark Twain Award nominee.

This was cute, and would be an easy one to booktalk. Kat's mom is a medium, and she is worried that the popular crowd at school will make fun of her if they find out. Then she sees the ghost of a former student in the school library, and realizes that she has inherited her mother's talent. The ghost needs her help, if Kat can bring herself to accept her new skills.
First in a series.

Very cute fun book about a middle school girl who inherits her mother's ability to see and comunicate with spirits. Enjoyable Read. The author did research on the theories surrounding communicating with spirits and is spot on with some of her descriptions. Not a title to recommend for your super-conservative Christian patrons.

The most stupid book ever. all she wanted to do is be popular for the first third of the book. It was horrible. The only part of the storyline that i liked was the fact that the author actually put something interesting, which is the fact that she can talk to and see ghosts.

**audiobook**
for middle-school (7th grade protagonist)
book 1 of a series
Students who like the shows _Medium_ and _Ghost Whisperer_ will like this book. Some parents may not.
The audio was only 4 CDs, so this may be a good book for reluctant readers.

Loved this book on cd. Kat's mother is a medium and one day she discovers that she has the gift as well. Kat isn't so sure that she wants the gift though. Kat and Jac, her friend, find a spirit that is trapped in the school they attend. Can Kat figure out why she is still there?
