3 ½-4 stars – Contemporary Romance

This series seems to have lost a little speed with this and the previous book. I'm hoping things get back on the "Fast Track" with Jacked Up, which based on the snippet at the end of this is finally going to be Eve's book. Although it's not my favorite of the series, Slow Ride is still an entertaining, steamy, and satisfying contemporary romance. I'm hoping Eve's book revs the series up a bit!

I really loved this book, which surprised me, because after reading a few reviews I didn't have high hopes. But I loved it because...well basically, it entertained me.:) It was a quick easy read, filled with witty dialogue and sexy, sometimes snarky banter, and featured the most adorable, husband-worthy male lead of this series (outside of Elec Monroe, that is) in retired race car driver Daniel "Diesel" Lange. Oh how I loved this sexy, kind, thoughtful, big-hearted and slightly insecure hunk!

Normally I enjoy Erin McCarthy's books, but I was extremely disappointed in this story and could not even bring myself to finish reading this book. Could have something to do with the fact that I really don't like drunk people all that much, let alone drunk people who do stupid things... I will delete it from my ereader and move on to something more worthy of my time. Obviously this just wasn't my cup of tea.

I’m not a car race fan in real life, but I do like the idea of this series that follows these drivers lives. However, this one just doesn’t quite rev my engine.

Daniel “Diesel” Lange first meets Tuesday Jones at her father’s funeral. Diesel was her father’s favorite race car driver, until Diesel got into a horrible crash which crushed his knee. Unable to drive anymore, Diesel now restores vintage race cars and leads a pretty quiet life. Tuesday writes a very popular blog gossiping about the lives of the drivers on and off the track.

Devastated by her father’s passing, she still is on shaky ground when she goes to her best friend’s wedding a few days later. Unintentionally eating a piece of coconut cake, which she hates, she accidentally ends up spitting it out…in Diesel’s hand. Diesel is amused by this very verbal, outgoing woman. Tuesday turns to lots and lots of champagne to get her through the evening, and Diesel, being the gentleman, makes sure she gets home safely and that nothing happens between them that night. But these two are very attracted to each other and they start to pursue a relationship.

It is kind of hard to write a longer summary for this book because there really isn’t a lot that happens. There is no real conflict – just Diesel and Tuesday dating, having sex (a lot of sex) a little fight, and then a happily ever after. I kept waiting for a conflict, something to push this story along, but nothing ever comes about. Throughout the book, Tuesday is working through her grief over her father’s death. This leads her to drink wine, to a somewhat excessive amount. She gets tipsy more than once, and embarrasses herself towards the end of the book. We are led to believe this is a big deal – and Diesel is always very disappointed when she turns to the wine. Partly because Diesel doesn’t like to see Tuesday act drunk, but he also can’t have sex with her if she has been drinking and that is just a downer! The drinking angle just didn’t do it for me – if she is really going to have a drinking problem, to the point she needs counseling and to give up alcohol all together, her few times of getting drunk in this book didn’t live up to that.

Speaking of sex, wow this book has a lot of sex in it. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. The sex scenes are not only plentiful but drawn out. One thing I enjoyed in this book is that Diesel has a very serious knee injury, and in every situation in the book, Diesel is always reminded he can’t quite function fully with it. It puts a little doubt in his head – sometimes embarrasses him when he winces or he can’t put full weight on it when in bed with Tuesday, or even in just a normal circumstance. Diesel likes to be in control in the bedroom and Tuesday, while she says she likes to submit, she is pretty feisty herself. The sex scenes are done well, but I think with the lack of conflict, they just go on and on and sacrifice the plot.

I also think the argument at the end, and how things are resolved, is really rushed and felt forced.

What it comes down to is that I didn’t love Tuesday. She has her funny, sarcastic moments, but I don’t think she is fleshed out well or that we really get to know her. I connected with Diesel a little more and the sex scenes are erotic, but without much else pushing this story along, this isn’t one I can recommend.(less)

I feel like this book was a tale of two stories - the first 80% and the rest. I liked Diesel and Tuesday together in the first part; each seemed to truly complement the other. The ending, however, was rushed, and I missed the D and T of the beginning.

I liked SLOW RIDE more than the previous book The Chase, which perhaps isn't saying too much.

What I liked about this one? Tuesday and Kendall's interactions - having female friendships amidst the testosterone-fueled atmosphere is always a nice contrast. Oh how I love thee Erin... We go from a sad funeral in the prologue to a hilarious wedding reception.. What a range of emotions just in 19 pages. This book is about alot of loss and how our hero Diesel Lange and heroine Tuesday Jones deal with their respected losses. Both Diesel and Tuesday have issues that they really aren't dealing with. Tuesday's father has just died and rather than dealing with her grief, she drinks. Diesel's driving career ended with a horrific crash that left him scarred both physically and mentally, but rather than deal with it, he ignores it. These are not two people that are really in a place where they can establish a healthy relationship, especially Tuesday. Instead, they settle into a pattern of happy, magical times and hot sex, followed by times where she drinks, they fight, and things go to hell. Then they start all over again. That would have been okay if those issues were resolved, but there was truly no resolution in this book, or true change in their behavior that I saw. I wanted to see them go through a lengthy, healthy measure of time together as a couple before I could buy that this is a relationship that is going to last past the first speed bump.

Regardless, this was still an entertaining book. I really liked both Tuesday & Diesel's characters. They are COMPLETE opposites, but they have incredible chemistry that is sizzling. I loved that Diesel was this quiet, laid-back, unassuming guy, but was a total Dom in the bedroom...a great twist to his personality. In the same way, Tuesday is an in-your-face, tell-it-like-it-is kind of gal that is always the life of the party, but Diesel's Dom personality totally does it for her. Like I said, the sex is sizzling.

I really enjoyed both of these characters and how they interacted with each other... most of the time. I also loved getting to revisit the characters again from the past books. Honestly, I wouldn't have even minded the issues that were there for these two characters, if I felt like that there was true resolution for them. The conflict is good because any good book needs some conflict, but it just went on for too long, or else the book did not go on for long enough so that I could believe as a reader that these two could actually have a long, healthy relationship.

There are really some great moments in this book. Here are some of the fabulous quotes, to give you an idea of the fun that there is to be found in this book:

Tuesday pulled back and stared at him, her eyes searching his. Sniffling, her nose red, she said, "You're a nice guy, aren't you?"

Just so you know, I can be a badass, too." He wanted to make sure he didn't come off as a total pansy.

Tuesday just lost her father to cancer and on his funeral cries all over Daniel "Diesel", her dad's favorite race car driver.

I really enjoyed Slow Ride, the 5th book in her Racing series. I have read the others in this series and had expected to like it as much as the others and it didn’t disappoint! I was sucked in from the 1st page. Although I was not sure about Tuesday's character in previous books, I really liked her in her story - once again you learn what drives her, what made her be the person she is and the hurt that triggered the project that is the start of this book - losing her Dad, who was a legend in sports journalism.

Tuesday is a sports writer and blogger following in a path similar to her father who was well known and liked in racing. Diesel was his favorite driver and he was working on an article about Diesel when he died. Diesel was a promising driver but left the sport after an accident that should have taken his life. He has been moving forward with his life but not necessarily facing all of his demons. He doesn’t like to talk about his accident or decisions he’s made after the fact. Part of him feels like less of a man now that he is no longer a driver.
Tuesday plans a benefit to raise money for cancer in honor of her father and Diesel generously donates a care he has restored to the auction. At the event Tuesday, in an intoxicated state, announces that the winner of the car auction will also win a driver’s experience with Diesel. The issue here is that Diesel had specifically told her he was not at all interested in doing that.
There are a few parts that I don’t like about the book. I definitely don’t like that Tuesday sold Diesel out at the auction and I don’t like that there was talk that both of them were wrong at the benefit. In my opinion Tuesday was 100% to blame for that and her actions were fairly unforgivable. I also believe the author doesn’t step out of her female perspective enough when she writes the male character. His actions often times seem too feminine. Even the conversations he has with other men in the book sound more like they are girls talking. In my opinion it needs a more realistically male approach. I did like that Diesel was laid back in every day life but a little more in control in the bedroom. I didn’t like the article that Tuesday finished and published. I felt like the author gave up in that area. It could have been something very exciting. She could have poured more of her heart and soul into it and really played up the man that Diesel is. Instead she wrote a ‘nothing’ article that only hurt Diesel. I didn’t see the point and didn’t understand how she could have not realized the impact her words would have on someone that she loved. I like a happy ending so I’m ok with the fact that they are engaged at the end but I didn’t like how it all played out. They weren’t in love or together enough for either of them to really think that marriage was the next step. It just seemed forced to me.
Why did the author establish that Tuesday would do anything for a cookie and not make a fun scene around it? It seemed like she tossed the ball and never took a swing.
Overall I’m still enjoying the series and I wish I had read them in order. I found out in this book that Evan hadn’t really knocked up Nikki’s friend Sarah – she was pregnant by another man. I’m very happy about that outcome and it explains why there weren’t any talks of the situation in the next book. (spoiler for the next book in this next line) I thought it was weird that in this book Evan and Kendall decide to try to get pregnant since they seem to have about the same moment in the next book.

Daniel “Diesel” Lange knows what it is to lose someone he cares about. The former racing star has not only lost family members, he’s lost his passion now that his career is over due to a terrible accident on the track that shattered his knee. But in Tuesday, Diesel finds passion once more. The brazen beauty is everything Diesel wants – but is she more than he can handle?

Don’t be fooled by the title – in Slow Ride Tuesday and Diesel fall in love faster than a stock car driver takes the final lap of a race. There aren’t many obstacles in Tuesday and Diesel’s path and the ones that are there are created by Tuesday herself, so a good author like Erin McCarthy can make this kind of lightning fast love story work.

It’s easy to see why Tuesday falls for Diesel – the man’s damn near perfect without being a cardboard character. Diesel is sexy, patient, and generous with his time, money, and heart. I fell head over heels for him and he might just be my favorite hero of Ms. McCarthy’s to date. The only thing that confused me about Diesel is why he fell in love with Tuesday. The fact that they’re total opposites wasn’t the problem. I just couldn’t see what it was Diesel loved about her. I actually liked Tuesday in the beginning of Slow Ride. She’d just lost her father to cancer and my heart broke for her. I even understood her unwise decision to self-medicate with alcohol…until it turned into self-destruction. Tuesday spends a good portion of Slow Ride drunk and that’s where I lost my patience with her. It’s not Ms. McCarthy showing Tuesday’s downward spiral that irritated me, but rather the fact that Tuesday is the most obnoxious drunk I’ve ever had the displeasure to read about. She simply gets more and more selfish and annoying and it isn’t until thirteen pages from the end of the book that she figures out she has an actual alcohol problem and needs help (to cope with loss and her alcohol abuse, not for her selfishness). To make matters worse, Diesel and Kendall (Tuesday’s best friend) make excuses and enable Tuesday’s bad behavior. Just like in her last Fast Track book, The Chase, Ms. McCarthy doesn’t leave enough room at the end of the book to satisfactorily resolve a major issue. Banter, sex, and fighting between hero and heroine are all well and good, but if there’s a major problem or plot twist in the story, it’s just not plausible to have that wrapped up in ten pages or less.

Speaking of The Chase, for the readers who were dissatisfied with the baby plot twist in that story, Ms. McCarthy addresses it in Slow Ride. I was one of the many readers who hated that particular plotline in The Chase and while I don’t pretend to know what Ms. McCarthy was thinking, it felt like she was attempting to backtrack with how she “resolved” the storyline. I won’t spoil how she solved Evan’s baby dilemma, but I will say that the outcome rang false.

Slow Ride is the fifth book in Ms. McCarthy’s Fast Track series, but it can be read as a standalone. Those who’ve read the previous books will likely be pleased to revisit their favorite couples in Slow Ride. Having loved Flat-Out Sexy, Hard and Fast, and Hot Finish, revisiting these pairs was a real treat for me. One scene with Ryder and Suzanne (of Hot Finish) actually stole the whole book for me.

Slow Ride is a bit of an uneven book. It starts out strong and then fizzles out, so it’s not my favorite book of Ms. McCarthy’s. Still, I loved Diesel and revisiting some of her other Fast Track characters reminded me why I fell in love with this series. I haven’t given up on Ms. McCarthy yet, and here’s hoping that the Fast Track series gets back on track with the next book, Jacked Up.(less)

Ex-car racing driver Diesel Lange being sexually dominant and taming bigmouthed blogger Tuesday? Well, that's promising. But I was truly was disappointed with this story. Diesel wasn't at all that dominant. Tuesday was a more realistic character, a little emotionally unstable. But that was logical after the things she went through and was still trying to deal with.

I liked Diesel and Tuesday because they were imperfect. And I find that I relate with imperfect characters. Gorgeous, but still imperfect. It was certainly better than the last two books. In fact this book convinced me to go look for the next one.

Erin's writing was good, but was up with the confusing surnames? Is it Richards? Reynolds? An editor should've picked that up.

I was not thrilled with this installment of the series. I could not really warm up to Tuesday and Diesel. I like Tuesday as the comic relief but not really as the heroine. Erin McCarthy... another hit! Slow Ride meshes right into the series with the rest which is no easy feat because both characters were not in the original group. Tuesday being the racing blogger only briefly mentioned in book 1 and Diesel, the retired/injured race car driver.

This book was okay. I don't think I was invested in this book as much as the others in the series. I am a lot more discriminating of contemporary verses historical romance and the immaturity of language in this book and kind of dumb crudeness definitely took it down a notch. At the end was a preview of the next book in the series where the author actually uses the phrase "all that and a bag of chips." Hello 90s! Talk about cheese city. That is a FANTASTIC book! I love this series. I really enjoy Erin McCarthy in general because she does a very good job of balancing the romancy fluff stuff and the serious, emotional, deep stuff which i really appreciate.
I really loved this story because they both have issues but they work through them. The biggest problem i had with this book is that it felt a little rushed in the end... I would have preferred one or two more chapters to finish off this book. All of the emotions throughout the...more

Tuesday Jones grew up in the stock car racing world. Her father was a very respectable racing journalist and she runs her own Tuesday Talladega racing gossip blog. When her father passes away from cancer after being diagnosed only six months before Tuesday is devastated. At her father’s funeral she runs into Daniel “Diesel” Lange, an ex-driver, and her comforts her when no one else can. Imagine her surprise when she runs into him four weeks later at her best friend’s wedding. Tuesday is shocked at how easy it is to be around Diesel but even that might not be enough for this tough girl who is grieving so badly.

Two years ago Diesel Lange was at the top of the stock car racing world but all of that changed when the car he was driving crashed into a wall and he almost lost his life. Diesel now lives a quiet life restoring old cars and mostly keeping to himself. Since the accident he has found it hard to meet women and most find his quiet nature boring until he meets Tuesday Jones. Tuesday is a spitfire and full of energy despite the obvious pain she is in over her father’s death. The chemistry is amazing between the two but that might not be enough for two people who are both dealing with some much pain and who are both so afraid to love again.

Slow Ride is the fifth book in Erin McCarthy’s Fast track series and the only book that I have read in the series. I have heard very good things about this series and as a fan of sports themed romance novels I was very excited to read it but I found myself a little disappointed. Diesel is an ex-stock car driver and Tuesday is a blogger of the sport so most of the book takes place off the track and isn’t as sports orientated as I’ve heard the others in the series are. I still enjoyed the book but I really wanted more racing then was given.
When starting this book Tuesday’s father has just died and she is at his funeral. This is a very sad time in her life and I was very surprised at how well Mrs. McCarthy let Tuesday grieve fro her father but also let her still be her fun, sassy self. The balance between Tuesday self-destructing because of her pain and the great romance that grows between her and Diesel was very well written and balanced perfectly. I loved the banter between Tuesday and Diesel. It was very snarky and sarcastic but still funny and sweet.

My biggest problem with the book was how quickly Tuesday and Diesel fall in love. They meet at her father’s funeral then reunite four weeks later at her best friend’s wedding. After that they are almost inseparable for the next three weeks and declare their love for one another. Then they have a fight and don’t speak for a month and then they make up and ride off into the sunset. During this time Tuesday has a couple of breakdowns while drinking heavily and I found it hard to believe that she could fall in love so quickly and be grieving at the same time. I also found it hard to believe a no nonsense guy like Diesel put up with Tuesday’s self destructive behavior and fell in love with her when she was such an emotional wreck. This is the main reason I rated the book so low because I just found a lot of it to be unbelievable.
I did like this book and think that I will try to read some of the earlier books in the series. This book can be read as a stand alone. The only time that I was lost was when the books visits some of the previous characters from earlier books. All in all, this is a very cute but sometimes dark romance that will make you laugh one minute and tear up at the same time.(less)

Maybe because I am dealing with my own grief over my mother's recent death, I felt this book has the most depth of the series. The relationship between Tuesday and Diesel did not seem like a mismatch or rushed. It is actually to me, a very tender love story of two people that really need and want each other. one of the thing that i can't stand in the books are ppl that are matchmakers. diesels uncle and aunt are sooo annoying. jezzz guy is like 30 and he has his own brain and they are so overbearing. like they would like that someone is messing with their love life. anyway for that i give book 4stars.

There she ends up crying on Daniel “Diesel” Lange’s broad shoulder. Diesel is a former driver now permanently sidelined with a damaged knee after a spectacular crash a few years earlier. There is insta-attraction between Diesel and Tuesday, of course, and from there the book could easily have gone down the well-worn path of hero and heroine becoming attached only to have one or the other pull back due to commitment phobia or have a “big misunderstanding.” McCarthy pulls a rabbit out of the hat in Slow Ride, however, and the reader ends up getting something much more realistic, and much more moving.

Tuesday and Diesel are both likable people, but more than that, both feel like someone I might know. There isn’t anything over-the-top about their good qualities or the annoying ones, although per usual they are both much better looking than average. I would love to see more heroines like Tuesday Jones in my contemporary romances. She is a sexually confident woman who isn’t shy or apologetic about it. Her sexual confidence is shown as a positive and there is never a hint that Tuesday should feel embarrassed by it. I also liked her talkative personality and her go-getter attitude. Narrator Emily Durante was perfect as Tuesday Jones. The slight southern accent was spot-on and Durante maintained it consistently throughout the book. Durante captures Tuesday’s energy, speech patterns, and personality. She even portrays the drunken Tuesday convincingly.

Diesel is Tuesday’s opposite in personality—quiet, calm, and unshakeable. He has a good sense of humor and an endearing insecurity about how to proceed with a serious relationship. McCarthy does such a good job writing the inner thoughts of both characters as well as their often funny dialog. She also writes scorching love scenes. Again Emily Durante’s skill as a narrator shines through. Her voice for Diesel is masculine and uniform throughout the book. She does a great job with the sex scenes as well. My only complaint with this narrator is her habit of giving a fake laugh (or sigh or cough) when the author puts it in the dialog tag. There is no way to make it sound real, and I would prefer the narrator not voice it. However, this truly is a minor complaint given the overall high quality of the narration.

Partway through Slow Ride I wondered when the conflict between the main characters would happen. The descriptions of them getting to know each other are definitely enjoyable, but a conflict is inevitable. Fearing a big misunderstanding, what I got was much more subtle and believable. Both Tuesday and Diesel have recently experienced traumatic events in their lives, but are they really healing or just hiding from their loss? Slow Ride doesn’t deal with the issues in any real depth, but the fact that McCarthy has her characters actually confront their issues is a huge step in the right direction.(less)
