This is the seventh book in the Allie Beckstrom series. This book has some big changes in store for the characters as they pick up the pieces from the mess that was left after the previous book. I enjoyed it, but the beginning of the story is more of a transition...the end packs some serious awesomeness though. With the mess that happened in the last book someone in the Authority has to take the blame and someone new has to be put into power. The new head of the Authority is a man named Bratholonew Wray and he has some dark past with current members of the Authority, he also seems determined to make Allie's life miserable. Then Allie starts getting sick when she uses magic and notices Veiled entering people on the streets. The people that the Veil enter get very sick, to the point that rumors of an epidemic of sorts are spreading throughout the city. Allie is convinced that the epidemic has something to do with magic being tainted but Bartholomew disagrees. Allie has some tough choices to make; will she go along with the Authority and watch the city die or will she go against the Authority and accept the consequences?

The first part of this book was a bit tedious but necessary, basically all the loose ends from the last book have to be tied up. People who caused trouble in the Authority must be Closed and the people around them have to cope with this. New leadership must be chosen and put in place. Allie has to try to get back to her own life taking care of the Hounds, dealing with her father in her head, that sort of stuff. All necessary to get the story moving the right way, but it made the story seem a bit aimless in the beginning.

Once Allie starts seeing the Veiled things really pick up. Allie finds herself in direct opposition to the Authority and both her and Zayvion have to make some big decisions. Both of them change a lot throughout this book. Allie becomes harder and has to do some things the old Allie would never have had the stomach to do. Zayvion starts to see more areas of grey versus everything as black and white, good and evil.

The end of the book totally blew me away and I am eager to see how everything falls out in the next book. So, although this series has never been one of those absolutely outstanding ones for me, it is a series that is consistently good and always engaging. I am still reading it seven books in so that says a lot!

Overall a wonderful addition to this series. I thought it started a bit slow with all the clean-up and transition that had to be done from the last book, but the second half of the book saw some huge changes for are characters and the ending was spectacular. I am dying to know what happens to all of our favorite characters in the next book, Magic without Mercy (to be released in April 2012).(less)

I will start off by saying that I thought this book was amazing and it is the best book so far that I have read in 2011. I wish that I had reviewed the previous 6 books because a bit like Allie I can sometimes forget what happens in books and I use my reviews to refresh my memory like Allie uses her journal. In this installment we have a new leader of the Authority who is drastically changing the way things are run. Magic has also been poisoned and it is infecting the masses and eventually killing them. Even though absolutely loads happens in this book I thought it was written at a slower pace than the others and I liked that as there is always so much to take in. I feel sorry for poor Allie she never gets a break she deserves a massive vacation. All the usual crew are there Zayvion, Terric, the Hounds and last but definitely not least my man Shamus (Oh Shame I love you), but the book tends to centre more on Allie. She seems to be on her own a bit more and it reminded me of the first book. I can tell that we are getting towards the end of the series as some major things happen that turn everything on its head and I had no idea why certain things were happening until the explosive ending. I'm sorry to be so vague on this but I can't talk about the events without giving away spoilers. Allie's father is still in her head and more secrets are promising to reveal themselves about Allie's past which I can't wait to find out. Daniel Beckstom you are so devious and nasty, I love that about you. I find Ms Monks voice wonderful, I could read her books all day long, I get totally lost in her stories. The characters and dialogue between them is so believable that I feel I am there. The world building she does is so creative, I love all the magic she comes up with. We are left with a huge cliffhanger in this book and I am now counting down the days until April 2012 for the next one. I would like to give this book 5 stars. Weird things are happening to the houds and magic users...then on top of everything else, Allie finds herself once again in hiding - from the Authority AND the law this time. Not only that, but suddenly she's having a hard time accessing magic - something that has always been so easy for her, so natural. Things are going to hell in a handbasket, for sure.

I think that this is the next to final book in the series - if not then it's very close to the final book. Things are definitely coming to a head - story arc-wise. A few more hints about Allie's magical history are given...has she really been closed? if so how many times? Is her dad really an evil guy (as evil as Allie believes?), or is he a guy who's simply ready to do what ever he has to, to make a dollar and make magic accessible. There's more to Allie and her father's past than she's been told...can't wait to find out what's going on - or what went on. And as usual Devon Monk has managed to write a novel full of hard decisions, horrific happenings, heartache/break and STILL managed to fit in some snarky dialog, and excellent words between the characters. You would think that this should be easy - but it's not everyone (speaking of authors) who can have their characters speak naturally, the way the real people in everyday lives speak. Many times, the speech patterns don't really match the characters or the times that the book is set in. I've enjoyed the dialog as well as the plots and narration of Devon Monk's novels - and Magic On The Line is no exception to this.

It's hard to write much about a book, especially one this far along in a series without spoilers, so I'm trying to keep this to generalities. In general, we see a lot of return characters - with a focus on Allie (of course, main character and pov) Zayvion Jones, Shamus and Terric. Stone, the Gargoyle appears. Victor, Maeve, Davy and a few others play important roles, but aren't seen much. New characters are introduced - Bartholomew and a Doctor Collins (a very strange man) and a few others are returning characters who have played small parts before.

All in all, a very interesting installment with the usual wonderful, magical touch of Devon Monk's way with words put together in a book that I enjoyed very much. If you've been thinking about getting into this series, DO IT, YOU WON'T REGRET IT. If you're waiting to get this book, and are a follower - get it as soon as you can, you'll want to read this one.(less)

The portland branch of the Authority is under new management - a Mr Barthlomew Wray. Wray is making things very difficult for Allie and friends. There's a lot going on for Allie she's always on the move trying to resolve the next problem which is good but somewhat annoying as she seems to feel that she alone is responsible for everyone around her - the Hounds, Zay, Shame, Violet, baby Daniel, Anthony, Victor, Maeave,...more The seventh book in the Allie Beckstrom series and things aren't slowing down. I wished she'd realise that their adults who make their own decisions and stop feeling like she has to fix everything. She does get support from Hounds but I feel everyone else are too concerned with their own problems and only when Allie is hurt seriously do they help her.
Using magic is making Allie sick and the people of portland are dying due to infected magic. Allie is investigating this as the Authority (which is under Wray's control) are doing nothing.
The Hounds are brilliant and loyal to Allie following her in case she needs help. Shame and Terric have a complicated relationship I'm looking forward to see where Devon takes these too whether they stay friends or something more..either way I'd be happy as long as their's some sort of resolution between them.
Zayvion and Allie I don't know where to begin I felt heartsick reading how much Zayvion loved Chase and would always love her, how intense their relationship was and how Chase's death tore Zay up. Poor Allie she had to hear Zay say he would always love Chase. It's obvious Zay loves Allie but since Chase was introduced in the series early on it feels like Allie was just Zay's rebound who just so happens to be his soul complement. I don't mind someone having a past love but Zay still loves Chase and it does seem that his feelings for Chase are more than what he feels for Allie. In the last book Magic on the Hunt Allie's dad takes over her body and is killing Grayson (Chase's soul complement), Chase will die if Grayson is killed but her dad wants Grayson's dead.. Zayvion protects Chase/Grayson and Allie sees in Zayvions eyes her death, so basically Zay was close to killing Allie to save Chase even though Allie was innocent and her dad was the one trying to kill Greyson and therefore Chase. This is never addressed and Allie doesn't question that he was thinking of killing her so Chase would live. Allie loves Zay only but yet she has to live with Zay loving Chase and her forever.. that doesn't sit right with me. It's clear Allie loves Zay more than Zay loves her throughout the series she puts her own life at risk for him and while Zay does save Allie many times I can't remember him putting his life at risk for her. I just think she deserves more she's always having to fight for Zay and trying to get him to open up but he's just too closed off and puts distance between them all the time, I'd like Zay to fight for Allie and make and effort with her instead of Allie doing all the work. I'd also like him to get over Chase.
Moving on their's only 2 books left but so much is left unanswered and I'm worried things will still be left up in the air:
-What happened to Allie's mother? What happened between her mother and father? Where they soul complements? If they were how could he fall in love with Violet, aren't soul complements meant to be special?
-Why does her dad love Violet and his newborn son but feels no love for Allie? Why did the part of her dad she met in death seem to love her? Did the part of her dad that loved her die? If the dad in her head can love Violet and his newborn son so much why can't that part of him start to love Allie?
-Why was her dad not fond of her as a child? Why was she unwanted?
-What happened to her as a child when she nearly died? How did she put her dad's life at risk?
-Where are Zay's family? I can't remembered them being mentioned?
-Why did Allie have that extra magic inside her soul (the one she gave up to save Zay)?
-What's happened to Allie's memories as a child, in college and other times? Was she closed or was it because of the use of her magic? If it is because of magic why don't others lose their memory when using magic?
-Did Allie's dad try and stop Jingo Jingo when he found out he was a child molestor?
-Why did Allie's dad never tell her about the Authority? because I don't believe he did it to protect her as he doesn't care about her. When Allie is first possessed by her dead dad she knows his thoughts/intentions and she can feel that her dad would do anything to stay in her body even if it means killing her- so he doesn't care if she's dead or alive and he only cares now because if she dies now so will he. So I don't believe that he would have wanted to protect her from the authority because him not caring if Allie dies as long as he gets to live is not the action of a protective father.
-Why is Allie afraid to be in elevators? Did something happen to her in an elevator or has she always been claustrophobic?
-What's in Allie's box of dreams?
-Why are soul complements so special and meant to be together, when the love Allie's dad has for Violet and Zay has for Chase are so strong, undying and true?? What kind of difference is the love between Allies's dad/Violet, Zay/Chase and between soul complements because their doesn't seem to be any really.
There's probably a ton of other questions I have but with 2 books left are we going to get answers... I hope so I love love this series and have invested a lot time into it.(less)

So lets just say...

What in the world has Allie Beckstrom not done to protect someone?

Be taken as Hostage? Check!

Fight back? Check!

Take a bullet to heal someone else? Check!

Walk into Death? Check!

ok... And all these things that she has done... Have specifically put herself into harms way, or possibly the course of death to accomplish the goal of helping others.

So I must admit, out of all the books this one has given us a brief glimpse of her past, not really but its better.

The Allie books are so fast paced, yet you never really feel lost or slow to catch up. Things just move quickly and I love that! The pacing is just ultra grand! Read this at a pretty good pace considering I have a slight cold. I couldn't put it down, nor did I want to.

Things are not going good for Allie. There's a new boss in town taking over the Authority, Bartholomew Wray. And yeah, you can pretty much guess what kind of character he'll be. Rhymes with "tick", but begins with a "pr"! ;)

But there's nothing Allie can really do, unless she wants to challenge him and find herself Closed. Bartholomew is already making big changes and doesn't seem to care one way or another about the outcome whether it's positive or negative. He's power hungry.

That's not Allie's only problem though.The Veiled are causing monstrously huge problems. They're endangering people. And when they target one of Allie's own, all bets are off. She will do whatever it takes to get rid of them and help her friend out. Even if it means calling on some of her dad's resources.

Allie and Zay are still doing well as a couple. They face some hard trials in this book, but still manage to find moments of peace together. I love them together! I love Zay's Zen-ness. Yet if the moment ever calls for it, he can be fierce! And her makes some drastic decisions in this book as well.

The ending was quite shocking as well. Big things were going down and big things will continue to go down. This is only the beginning for Allie and her friends. A few new characters popped up, yet their roles weren't totally strong, but my mind is definitely reeling with who they might be in the next book, Magic Without Mercy. Now as to which side they'll be on, I'm still skeptical! But that's what I love about reading! I love the constant guessing about characters' motives!

There was also too much time with Allie alone, no Shame, no Zayvion, and, frankly, that's too much Allie. For a woman who relies on her wits and Hounding skills to make a living, she's astoundingly slow on the uptake much of the time and stunningly stupid on occasion.

This book deals with the aftermath of the showdown with Leander and Isabelle. It takes a while for the real story to begin as Monk deals with the repercussions of the last book. When the story does start and Allie begins seeing the Veiled possessing people, it takes her ages to put two and two together. Countless times, she sees something practically labelled 'Clue' and walks right on past, commenting that it's weird and then dismissing it completely. So much for being such a spectacular Hound.

Magic is making Allie ill. She throws up and passes out when she casts, but Monk never explains why. It doesn't affect anyone else like this, so why Allie? The whole story is a bit slapdash. Different elements pop up and don't get explained or tied to the story later on.

There are some new characters, mostly unpleasant, untrustworthy magic users, and the Hounds get more of a look in. There are also some interesting scenes with Cody, but the rest of the regulars are somewhat sidelined in this story.

Allie doesn't hear from Zayvion for ages and never appears to think to contact him and let him know about the things that are happening to her. When she does see him, she self-righteously bitches him out about the things he's had to do in his role as guardian of the gates, even though she can feel his emotions, none of which are good.

Allie and her brain-squatting dad seem to have called a truce and actually work together without either one of them fighting the other. This works well in the story and it's nice to see Daniel without the venom Allie usually spits at him. Perhaps she'll finally learn not to see everything as simply black or white all the time.

If you have not read the first 6 books I think you would be a bit lost trying to start at book 7 MAGIC ON THE LINE. There is a lot of back story that you would have missed and needed to follow along with everything. The Allie Beckstrom series is fantastic though so you wouldn't be disappointed in starting it. All the books up to date have been fast paced, full of action, adventure and interesting story line's to keep you coming back for more.

I enjoyed this book right up until the Allie & Zay went to the cistern. Then it became a massive "What the?" for me. Like a shark had been jumped or something. The whole Veiled turning into some kind of magic vampire virus giving creature made my eyebrows climb.

This has not stopped me from gnashing my teeth at having to wait until April...APRIL!!! for the next installment. And this is why I hate cliff hanger endings. Serious...more

Magic is poisoned and Allie can't use magic. Since she is a Hound and very good at tracking spells, not using magic is a big deal. A new boss is in town and he's cleaning house. Is it possible the story improves although it was already amazing? I think Devon Monk succeeded to do it. Or it’s the feeling I have now I finished this 7th novel. I have to say I was afraid to be disappointed in the beginning, because I think it’s always difficult to attract the reader, but like for the other books of the series I really love this new novel. And I can say now I can’t wait for the release of the 8th book to read it. A good thing it will be out in April, because the waiting would be horrible.

I have, I confess, forgotten a little, the end of the last book but I read this one without any problems. Of course, we can see every character here. Some new appear in the novel like Collins, an old friend of the Allie’s father. I think it’s the character that intrigues me the most. We wonder all along the story, despite he denies it, how he met Allie and what happened between the two of them. Despite she asks herself the question a couple of time, the great rhythm of the story prevents us to know the real answer. I wish we could learn more in the next novel, which I think will be full of excitement.

This seventh book is a preponderant turn in the series. Everything is questioned in a way we couldn’t expect. It’s difficult to not tell everything because I really get into the story and all the events. Of course, the Veiled are here too, like always, and always stronger. We can learn some new stories about Daniel or even about the real meeting about Allie and Zayvion. We worried with Allie, and we worried for Allie. Like for the other books, it’s a touching character we really like and we easily understand. She has to make some important choices and of course, she doesn’t choose the facility. She prefers to lead her life like she wants even if it’s really dangerous.

I quickly read the book, because like always the writing style is amazing. The story is rhythmic by action and the choices of our heroine. Well, you understand now, it’s a book I really loved and if you don’t know this series yet, I strongly recommend it.(less)

Oh, Magic on the Line was exceedingly good. I think it's the best in the series so far. An awful lot of tension, a very interesting and even a bit complicated storyline, and for the first time in the Allie Beckstrom series: character development (on Allie's part).

Still, there it had two significant faults:
- Cut-off ending: not exactly like a cliffhanger, but the story was just left hanging
- Stupid characters: it took them until then end of the book to figure out something that could already be...more

I want to say that so far of this series this has been one of my favorites.

Yes, Zay has changed. Yes, Allie is changing. To be honest, most of the characters are becoming more complex, even Alli's Dad. I think these things are expected and I would be more upset if the characters didn't change! And I totally feel for them all because there is no rest for the wicked in this series. I love this series! It has it all...great story, great characters and fast paced. I literally couldn't put the book down until the end. I was happy that I had all 7 books available, so when I finished one I could immediately pick up the next book in the series :-) Now I have to wait a couple of months, but I can't wait for the new book in April. I am a big fan of Monk's, and was once again happy with this latest release for Allie's story. That being said, there were things about this one that annoyed me more than any other Allie novel. However, if the new leader of the Authority has his way, they all will be mindless and incapable of using any magic. So, it comes really at no surprise when he simply ignores the plague of magical deaths sweeping across the city. She, and those closest to her will have to lay everything on the line to try and protect the innocent people of the city, because no one else will.

I should have known things wouldn't be any easier even though Allie and the gang now know who was behind all the chaos in the past. In Magic on the Line there is a serious case of jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire. The new leader of the Authority doesn't believe a word they say and is determined to clean up their "mess". Never mind that none of it was their fault, they are just in his way, as he proves when he removes them all one by one in exchange for his own flunkies. The joke is on him however, as I just don't see him lasting long in direct opposition to Allie and her friends. Of course she'll play nice at first, but it won't take long for her to snap, and she's proven time and time again that you really don't want to mess with her. So, while there wasn't a whole lot of butt kicking action in Magic on the Line, I have a feeling Allie will more than make up for that as her frustrations boil over, and the reader will just be along for the ride in the next book.

Magic on the Line opened up a whole new depth to the world behind the series. Prior to this point, I, like Allie, had thought the Authority was a small organization with only a few select members in any given city. Boy, how wrong were we both! Sufice it to say that it is much, much larger, with reaches that are quite staggering. Typically, by this point in a series, you wouldn't expect such a surprise based on the world end of things. By throwing this game changer in there, and pulling it off well, Devon Monk proves yet again just how talented of an author she really is.

Magic on the line is the seventh installment in a nine book series, so things are on their final stretch now. I'm going to be really sad to say goodbye, but I'll be honest that I am also incredibly eager to get my hands on the next two installments. Things really ended in a major mess at the end of this book, and I can only imagine the wild ride that must be in store to try and set things right. The implications of where things are heading have the potential to impact an incredible amount. To be honest, I'm not quite sure how much longer the Authority will be able to stay hidden in secret. I'm very excited about this possibility because nothing could make Allie (or me) happier than to see them crumble. I guess we will just have to wait and see. *crosses fingers* So, all in all, Magic on the Line was a fantastic read that will grab you from the very start and not let go, making it yet another installment that proves this fantastic series won't be losing steam before its time.(less)
