The all-animal touring concert group Zoola Palooza has come to town. With a motley crew of animals playing a variety of instruments, homographs abound (homographs are words that are spelled the same but sound different and have different meanings). Billy the striped BASS opens the show wearing a big BOW tie. He gives a gracious BOW from the top of his BASS fiddle.

Although this one is not as engaging as the earlier Dear Deer, it certainly contains wonderful puns and a quick run through several homographs, homonyms, and homophones. The idea of a huge outdoor concert with all of these strangely-named performers [Carter Piller, Carmen Chameleon, Florence Welk, Hedda Hip-Hopper, and Seals & Crawfish]was a bit contrived, but it also allowed the author to play around with words such as close/close, present/present, record/record, and wind/wind. Lots of puns that my kids didn't understand but it was still fun to read. Good way to teach kids about homographs. I was grateful for the note to the reader at the beginning about homonyms and homophones, as well.

After Dear Deer which took on homonyms, Barretta is back to take on homographs in Zoola Palooza.
A great book to add to your collection wot foster curiosity and interest in words.
Jenn
Dr.Seussy art and rhyming, or at least that level of fun and clever. It took me 2 tries of reading the entire story out loud without tripping over a homograph.
Kendra
This would be a good book to teach homographs, but it would have to be read out loud in order for kids without the understanding of homographs to get it.
Mary Lee
Very punny. Florence Welk makes an appearance, as do Seals and Crawfish. Lots if great examples of homographs.
Donalyn
Puns and lively illustrations explain the meanings of several homophones and homographs.

Gene Barretta has some of the cutest picture books ever. My family loves his books, from Dear Deer to Ben Franklin. I feel like such a dork when I'm a fan of picture books, but this one totally rules it. A book worth reading with kids, or just for plain fun!
