This is based on a true story of a Basque woman in the early 17th century who disguises herself as a man and sails to America. The story seems surreal. Mideaval Europe is strange enough (especially the Spanish Inquisition) and the story of a woman passing as a man for many years with discovery. The author stretches it farther by adding several very improbable coincidences and mixing them with truth. I found it hard to believe, so looked her up on the internet. Interesting book about Catalina Erauso, a 15th century nun who adopted a male persona and went to the New World to look for her brother. I found the writing style somewhat intrusive and overly mannered, but the story itself was very compelling.
