When I first requested this book, I didn't realize that it was a second in a series and by the time I realized that, I had already started reading it. It's always a tricky balance for an author to play, how much from a previous book should be discussed in new ones? Should there be a recap of former events, or just let the actions of the characters speak for themselves? Personally, while reading CATCHING AN EVIL TAIL, I felt a bit lost for the first third of the book and at one time, I even debated giving up and not finishing it. However, I stuck it out and around halfway through, it started improving and the story really came together.

One of the things that I always pay attention to when reading is the development of the characters and do I connect with them. Now, I know I can't exactly connect with a half-demon (although some of the guys I work with might debate that point on occasion), but with their personality. Do I sympathize with them when stuff goes wrong? Laugh with them at jokes? Etc.

I loved the character of Jeremy, he was such as badass and yet, you felt, or at least I did, that he really did like Jessie (or was doing more than just trying to get into her bed). Jessie was a difficult character to like, but towards the end, I enjoyed her sass and it felt like she came into her own (around the time that she met up with the werewolves). By the end of the book, Jessie was a kick-ass, no-holds barred heroine who didn't take flak from anyone, even after being attacked on multiple occasions.

The dialogue that occurred between her and Jeremy at times made me chuckle out loud – one scene that I enjoyed was Jessie getting herself drunk at the hotel one night. Jeremy to Jessie (after finding her drunk): "How did you get the bottles?" Jessie back to Jeremy: "I showed him my ass, and he sold them to me." And while Jeremy is trying to put her to bed after the drinking episode (Jessie to Jeremy): "Don't think you're sleeping with me. Hell will freeze over before I invite you into my bed." While I don't remember having word for word conversations like that, I remember having experienced roommates being drunk and some of the words that come out of their mouths were similar and as equally entertaining.

However, there was a veritable cacophony of paranormal creatures making their appearance throughout the book, including but not limited to Jessie (the main character and a half-demon); her boyfriend Drake, a Vampire; Jeremy, a full-blooded demon, ice hockey player and sometimes ex-lover, and the werewolf pack that she agrees to help. On top of that, there are two witches who live in the same complex, and her and her best friend, Dani (they didn't play a significant role in this novel, but it felt like the author was setting them up for later books); a new warlock at her place of work and her group of friends who are involved in ghost hunting. At times, it felt like the author had just gone through a dictionary of paranormal beings and decided to randomly add another one in. It will be interesting for me to go back and read the first book in the series and see if that helps me to understand any of the characters a bit more, because at times, it felt as though they were not fully fleshed out and were lacking a bit in description.

I would give the book 3 stars, in that it was an entertaining read, but it wasn't mind-blowing. However, I am going to seek out the previous book in the series and see if that changes my opinion of the overall world building in the series.(less)

I really don’t know what to say about this book except…wow.

First of all, as I should have known going in, this is the second installment in what is now a three-book series, and I am already stalking Amazon for the Kindle release. I also haven’t read the first one, but I very much intend to rectify that situation ASAP. Because I didn’t get to see Jessie and her vamp hook-up, I feel my perspective is a little skewed. Previously to reading Catching an Evil Tail, I already read and reviewed the first novel in The Soul Catcher Series, Claiming the Evil Dead. I have to admit that I liked Catching an Evil Tail better than the previous book. Probably because I’m more a fan of Jeremy/Jessie than of Drake/Jessie. Or maybe because I knew the characters better, understood their thoughts and actions (whereas in Claiming the Evil Dead, I often felt puzzled and confused) or maybe because the storyline seemed more appeali...more Previously to reading Catching an Evil Tail, I already read and reviewed the first novel in The Soul Catcher Series, Claiming the Evil Dead. I have to admit that I liked Catching an Evil Tail better than the previous book. Probably because I’m more a fan of Jeremy/Jessie than of Drake/Jessie. Or maybe because I knew the characters better, understood their thoughts and actions (whereas in Claiming the Evil Dead, I often felt puzzled and confused) or maybe because the storyline seemed more appealing to me. I guess it’s a mix of all of these components.

After the events in Claiming the Evil Dead, Jessie’s vampire-boyfriend Drake goes to Europe to take care of some urgent business. Although he promised Jessie he’d only be gone for two weeks top, six weeks eventually pass with barely a sign of life (notice the irony? an undead vampire giving a sign of life…alright well, I thought it was funny!) from Drake, and Jessie is seriously worried about their relationship. Like that isn’t enough trouble, her roommate Dani keeps blurting out things about Jessie’s private life, like her ability to sense ghosts. And on top of that, the demon Jeremy, is back in town. Although he helped Jessie defeat the evil vampire Alexander about a month prior, Jessie still isn’t sure whether or not he is a trustworthy ally. But this time, Jeremy asks Jessie’s help to claim the soul of a malicious werewolf who challenged the Alpha werewolf of a nearby tribe. Reluctant to agree at first, Jessie gives in eventually, and travels half-way across the country with none other than Jeremy. And obsessed as the demon is with the girl who he thinks is his soulmate, he will stop at nothing to seduce Jessie and get her in his bed. But he’s not the only one who is interested, as the Alpha werewolf seems to have an eye on Jessie as well.

I liked the storyline of this novel, the fact that it’s now Jeremy tugging Jessie along rather than good ol’ Drake, and I loved the addition of werewolves, witches and another warlock. Go diversity. I also loved most of the men playing a part in this book, especially Jeremy (talk about determination) and Alan (great leader figure), and the brief appearances from Drake were a nice touch as well. The combination between romance, action and suspense is spot-on as well, and I cannot recall feeling bored while reading for one single moment. Catching an Evil Tail is a well-written, relaxing and entertaining book, and I’m very glad to have read it.

Now, let’s continue to the things I didn’t like all that much. Jessie, our protagonist, isn’t exactly the most likeable character on the entire planet. She claims it takes a lot to earn her trust (for instance, she still doesn’t trust Drake completely, she doesn’t trust Jeremy at all, etc.) but then again, she has no trouble doing things that aren’t exactly trustworthy, like cheating on her so-called boyfriend. The one moment, she whines about being totally and completely in love with Drake, but then she lets herself get kissed by Jeremy roughly five minutes later. Then she bitches about how he continues to try and seduce her – while in fact, she is constantly leading him on, and playing the tease. Another major problem of the main character, is that she comes across as being rather egocentric, selfish and stuck up. In Jessie’s world, there’s hardly room for anyone but Jessie. And in this novel, it became all the more clear that for a half-demon with considerable powers, and a grown-up woman, Jessie is actually quite childish, immature and irresponsible. In this novel, it’s clearly the guys saving the day, because they do make up for a lot of Jessie’s flaws, up to the point that I’m wondering what any of them actually sees in her. But oh well, fantasy heroines have a tendency of not being all-that-likeable.

Now I think about it, this may have something to do with the fact that this novel is written in first person. It takes a lot of skill to pull this off, and although I think Mary Abshire did a marvellous job portraying the feelings of the other characters, even though writing in first person’s perspective, Jessie’s feelings may seem oversized, or over the top, simply because of the fact that it’s her talking. I don’t know if I’m explaining this well, or if I’m even getting my point across at all, but when writing in first person, the character talking will often seem more self-absorbed and emotional simply because we constantly see what’s going on in their mind. It’s a psychological thing, I guess.

If you like erotic paranormal romance, then Catching an Evil Tail is definitely one of the best books in the genre. If you like strong female characters, then Jessie will not dissapoint. If you like action, suspense and romance nicely tied together, then Mary Abshire’s series is exactly what you’re looking for. If you like a cast of interesting, diverse characters, then you will be in for a treat. You might agree with me that Jessie isn’t exactly the person you’d want to be friends with, but her adventures are exciting and thrilling enough to get past that. Mary Abshire’s writing is very promising, and I have high hopes – since I did like this book more than the previous one – that the next book, Fighting Evil, will be even more delightful to read.

Jeremy is a demon who’s lived for centuries in varying human bodies. While he has no qualms getting laid or blown by any attractive woman, he’s got his sights set on Jessie, despite the fact that she’s already in a committed relationship and has made her feelings clear on the matter. Like a typical incubus, he’s not going to give up. He’ll try every angle to get her in his bed, a fact that Jessie is all too aware of. One debt to Jeremy is enough. Can she dare trust him to release their prior contract for one that promises to set her free? Even if it means spending the weekend with him in a hotel?

Catching An Evil Tail is written in first person, from Jessie’s point-of-view. Despite this, the author does a fairly good job in giving us enough detail to get a feel for the other characters as well. The plot flowed well enough to keep me interested, but there could have been a little more excitement. There were times when I felt pertinent scenes were rushed over and less important ones dragged out. Some editing errors caught my attention, mostly missing words, but they weren’t overly distracting.

My biggest beef with the story was with the main character herself, Jessie. I liked her as a person, but her back and forth moods about her boyfriend made her sound too wishy-washy. She supposedly loved Drake with all her heart, yet allowed herself to be kissed and fondled by two other men during Drake’s absence. One minute she despises Jeremy—and lets him know it—the next she’s allowing him to kiss her. No wonder the guy won’t give up. Taking into account she’s half-demon, you do have to make allowances for her sexual nature. The fact that her boyfriend has been gone far longer than he’d promised, and he’s sketchy at best as to why he’s delayed in coming home, I can see where she begins to get confused and distrustful.

Over all though, I enjoyed Catching An Evil Tail. There were a few lingering loose ends, but the main dilemmas were addressed. The ending definitely leaves it open for another story. I hope Ms. Abshire has something in the works. I’d like to see a little more of these characters in future tales.

I really enjoyed reading CATCHING AN EVIL TAIL. This novel is the second in the SOUL CATCHER series, and I had not read the first. Even with this fact, I was able to follow along easily with the relationships and characters that had clearly made an appearance the first time around. I like it when I can read a book in a series, but the story line and interpersonal relationships stand alone from book to book.

One of the best things about this book was the distinctive voice of the heroine, Jessie. At times she is self-deprecating, at other times she is defiant, and there are even some parts where she is afraid for herself, and the people she cares about. Mary Abshire did a fine job expressing the different emotions that Jessie experiences. Because of this, I found myself connecting with her quite easily, and the connection stayed throughout the reading of the novel.

Abshire has a great series in the SOUL CATCHER novels, as far as I can tell. After reading CATCHING AN EVIL TAIL, I wanted to read the first book, CLAIMING THE EVIL DEAD. This is a fairly rare feeling for me. Once I begin a series, I only go forward, even if I am curious about a relationship or event that comes up in the novel, and is clearly something that would be found in a previous book. But again, the stand alone aspect of the series is very attractive to me, and I really would like to read more of Jessie's adventures.

CATCHING AN EVIL TAIL was an extremely enjoyable novel that gave equal attention to the romantic side of things as it did to the other parts of the story line. There's action, danger, a werewolf challenge fight, and some very alpha males. And, then there's Jessie, who knows how to take care of herself. Though she has to send evil souls to hell, she hasn't gotten too jaded with life, or seem too hard. I think this is the perfect novel for someone looking for a mix of urban fantasy and paranormal romance.

Well, her friend is actually Jeremy, a demon she owes a debt to, and his friend happens to be a werewolf named Ryan. Alan, the Alpha of Ryan's pack has been challenged for control by an evil werewolf who has spent years terrorizing and murdering women. Alan wants Jessie present at the challenge so she can send his soul to hell. To complicate matters, Jeremy wants Jessie for more than just her soul catching abilities, and Drake is none to thrilled about her being with him while he is away.

I dare you to read the first chapter and not be sucked into this story! (This was also true of the previous book.) Mary Abshire knows how to grab the reader's attention and not let go. The plot moves fast with a few surprising twists along the way. While I'm not sure this story follows the rules of a romance exactly, there are plenty of sexy scenes and erotic tension for those who like it steamy. The cast of characters is strong, and it includes the major players in the paranormal realm: demons, werewolves, vampires, warlocks and witches.

If you like strong female leads, then you will love Jessie. She is tough and knows how to take care of herself, but also realizes when she needs help. She continues to be troubled by her demon-half, wondering if she herself is doomed for hell, or whether her good deeds will save her soul. In this story, Jessie's relationship with Drake is rocky when she feels he has betrayed her trust. At the same time she's tempted by not one, but two other men who have set their sights on her: Jeremy and Alan. Jessie is conflicted, and the situation is an emotional one, not only for her but for the men vying for her attention.

Catching an Evil Tail is a captivating story that would appeal to fans of paranormal romance and urban fantasy. I'm very curious to see what happens to Jessie in the next book, Fighting Evil. Drake or Jeremy...who will she choose?(less)

Jessie continues to struggle now more than ever in keeping her abilities a secret. A dramatic turn of events in the second installment to The Soul Catcher series. We continue our journey with Jessie weeks after the first story left off and Drake’s speedy return doesn’t look quite so promising anymore. Emotions are running high and it seems like everyone wants a piece of Jessie. She continues to make some tough choices and none of which are without consequence. I have to admit that I really felt for her in this story as more often than not now she receives ultimatums that threaten her or those she cares for. It doesn’t help when people around her are trying to control her in some way or another and Jessie’s rebellious attitude peaks to new levels. This causes her to make decisions without all of the facts or much thought until it’s too late. By the end, nothing is or will be the same.

I really enjoyed a couple of the additional characters and I was left with the feeling that we haven’t heard the last from them. I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to a visit from the hunky werewolf leader, Alan.

Ms. Abshire’s ingenuity is without question, some of the best I’ve seen in a while from an author. The pacing of the story is very well done and provides enough detail to keep the imagery flowing. The action is intense and will have you holding your breath to see what happens next. Of course, you’ll be gasping in delight when it comes to those passionate kisses and sex scenes.

As we boldly journey into the next chapter of Jessie’s chaotic life, it’s unclear as to how everything will turn out. The unpredictability is both scary and exciting. A battle for Jessie’s heart and soul lay ahead and I can’t wait for the showdown!

Reader Advisory: in order to fully enjoy and understand some of the main characters in this story, I highly recommend starting with the first in the series, Claiming the Evil Dead.

He is also a full demon to her half demon status and can offer her a crash course on demon-ology since her warlock surrogate Sean didn't have the knowledge to do so as she grew up. Jeremy wants Jessie to help his friend Ryan's(who is a wolf)alpha pack leader Alan. Alan wants Jessie to suck the soul out of another wolf named Matthew who is challenging Alan for Alpha of the pack. Alan is sure he can defeat Matthew and that this would be a easy job. Some things are easily said than done. While getting ready for this challenge Jeremy thinks this is a fine time to also woo her away from Drake who we finally get to hear from when Jessie calls Drake(yeah!)and tells him what she is up too. Let's just say if it has anything to do with Jeremy(whom I find more likable this time around I must say but let's not get carried away.. I love Drake more!!! hehe) he is less than thrilled with idea and maybe this 6 week distance from each other will soon come to an end. So we have this love triangle (well semi-quadrangle because guess who also finds Jessie appealing....Alan)going on, some hot reuniting sex, some action and a whole lot of trouble coming Jessie's way too, and a nice segway into the next book.

A couple of things I need to note. We get introduced to a few new characters in this book. I like her new co-worker Mark who happens to be a warlock. Jessie also has two new lesbian witch neighbors who seem shady and Jessie is totally on to them. So they are probably a duo to look out for. Alan and the wolves will probably return also. I am curious about the Native American couple who thought they knew Jessie. She bumps into them at the airport when meeting up with Jeremy and it is here we learn that demons remember there past lives. Jessie however does not. Does this couple know her through a past life especially since we know that the woman of the couple gave Jessie a jolt of energy on her cheek? Sounds supernatural to me but I don't know yet. The couple could just be the start of wacky supernatural people coming into Jessie's present life. There is one thing that bugged me Jessie's roommate and best friend Dani. There is this battle with Jessie whether she should tell her best friend what she is or not. After a few of Dani's actions in this book I can't figure out why Jessie would make the decision she did when Dani betrayed her trust twice in the beginning and yet she still has trust issues with Drake and Jeremy. Well with Jeremy I can understand because he is manipulative based on his demon ways. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.. lots of trouble coming Jessie's way is guaranteed. More hot sexy Drake scenes to come I am sure of it too. Yes! And who knows what Jeremy has got up his sleeve...he is quite the devil ya know! hehe(less)

While Drake is still away on a VETOV reporting IN Europe (which was suppose to last a couple weeks, but this is going into the 6th week), Jeremy drops into town and makes good on those dates. I devoured this book in one night, it reads very fast. It wasn’t until I finished that I pondered a few things that made me not like it as much as the first book. One being the reason Jessie’s demon “friend” asks her to help him, he’s not that altruistic, so that part didn’t work for me . And the second being Jessie’s train of thought during Drake’s absence, this is hard to explain without giving away some of the story.

I did enjoy it very much and look forward to the third book…

WOW!!! I love this series! I have already bought the next 2 books! Talk about hot alpha men! Oh this book is full of them! This is one of those books you don't want to end!! I have no idea which direction the author is taking me next but I am so on board for the ride!!!
