I am very sorry, but this is unreadable. It's not often that a book makes me this angry. In fact, I don't remember the last time it happened. I'd honestly hoped that I would like it, otherwise I would never have requested it. But after 170 pages, the list of problems I had with The Mephisto Covenant was longer than the book itself. Alexandra ‘Sasha’ Annenkova is an Anabo, a descendant of Aurora, daughter of Eve before the Original sin. Being made of pure light, she is completely incapable of having negative emotions of any kind. She is kind, honest, caring, and of course, very beautiful.
Jax is Mephisto. He and his brothers capture Skia, the soulless shadows and the lost souls. He is the son of Hell.
Sasha’s father was murdered and she was very determined to discover who did it. But, as it turns out, her father was really a CIA agent and her great grandfather on her mother’s side was the head of KGB. So when her father ended up dead, the government decided to deport her mother back to Russia, but Sasha had to stay. Therefore, she ended up living with her father’s evil sister and her family.

Characterization is by far the worst part of this book: the characters are either ridiculously good or ridiculously evil, there’s nothing in between. They don’t possess complex personalities. As the protagonist, Sasha is good, forgiving and naïve. In other words, she’s boring. On the other side, her aunt Melanie reminded me of Cindarella’s evil stepmother. Instead of making me feel sorry for Sasha because of the way she treated her, I mostly just laughed.

Did I mention that Sasha and Jax are destined to be together? No? Well, that’s because they’re not. Jax is destined to be with Sasha, but Sasha has free will, he would never take away her right to choose! He just saved her, healed her and then stood there in all his glory until she fell for him. When she finally did (after a long 10 minutes or so), he wiped her memory clean so she could fall for him all over again. And of course, he only wanted her for her sparkling personality, despite the fact that she’s Anabo, the only girl he could ever be with!

”I’m Mephisto – you’re Anabo. Since I’m the one who caught your scent, it means you’re intended for me.”
(This needs no comment.)

If they ever do end up together and actually have sex, she will become more like him and their enemy will be able to sense her, track her and kill her. Yup.

I’m sorry I didn’t finish this book and I’m sorry I didn’t like it more. I really can’t recommend it to anyone.

I tried with The Mephisto Covenant, honestly, I did. But it was clear to me really early on that this was not the book for me, and unlike Carrier of the Mark (which I also realized early on was not the book for me), I didn't find anything in it that compelled me to keep reading.
Here's why:

I tried with The Mephisto Covenant, honestly, I did. But it was clear to me really early on that this was not the book for me, and unlike Carrier of the Mark (which I also realized early on was not the book for me), I didn't find anything in it that compelled me to keep reading.
Here's why:

* The characters. I can put up with a fair amount of pet peevishness in a book if I connect to at least one of the characters, but unfortunately, I did not. I think there were a lot of reasons, first among them that the characters felt more like caricatures. None of them, not one of them, felt real to me in any way. They were very overblown and exaggerated, and somewhat muddled, and almost always flat. Some were fanatical lunatics that did more to make me roll my eyes than feel any fear of them. Some were just dull as dishwater. But the two that the book hinges on, Sasha and Jax, just didn't do it for me, plain and simple. Sasha is described (by Jax) as someone who is pure good, is never tempted, is made of bright shining light, etc., etc. just because of her lineage. Well, I could really give a fig about perfect characters who are never tempted, ya know? But I don't think Jax's description of Sasha is entirely accurate: she does seem to be a little tempted to me, and probably not quite so angelic. But what really held me back from liking her at all is this: she's forever a victim. That's all I ever saw of her, and what actually caused me to put the book down.

It's because of this: If you have just been taken to an abandoned warehouse and been beaten by a group of people who call you an "Anabo" and threaten to do much worse things to you, AND THEN some guy shows up and freezes all the people who were stoning you, yes, you would be greatful for a minute. And probably freaked the fuck out. And maybe you'd be in shock, too, so I'll give you some leeway. When this strange person - who is beautiful, but also really scary looking - also calls you an "Anabo" I think your sensors would probably go up. So when he starts hitting on you and an entire group of scary looking men pop in, all eyes fixed on you, and the first guy claims you as his, well, do you trust him and look smittenly at him? HELLS NO.

You certainly do not calmly listen as he tells you the history of a convoluted mythology you've never heard of, hits on you, claims you as his, etc., etc. with nary more than a doe-eyed huh. If you don't either show some real fear there, or, you know, RUN LIKE HELL, I'm pretty much done with you at that point. I don't need another Nora Grey in my life, one was enough.

And then your memory is erased. Fine. And you move to a new town and go skiing with your psycho cousin, who abandons you on the slopes.

And a strange, beautiful but scary guy shows up, and though you've met him, you don't remember that. (But you do remember being almost stoned to death, so you should be a little leery, yeah?) And this guy helps you down the mountain, which is nice. Then he offers you a drink from his flask, which, no. You don't know this guy, stop right there. But it's okay, he tells you it's just spiced cider, and you drink it and feel a little funny, and say "Are you sure this is just cider?" to which he replies that it's maybe a little magic, and that you should "Drink up, and we'll have some fun on the way down."

You don't know this guy. He's offering you "magic" cider and saying you'll "have some fun" on the lonely mountain.
STRANGER DANGER, SASHA.
And yes, he actually is being honest, and doesn't intend to hurt you, but you don't know that. If you have no self-preservation instincts or common sense, I don't want to read about you anymore. (This was the point at which I stopped, btw.)

* The other thing that got me was the mythology. I don't want to get into all of it, and I'm not even sure I could, but the thing it all hinges on is something called the Mephisto Covenant. You see, Jax is something called Mephisto, an order of all male brothers and relations who take people to the gates of Hell. They're essentially fallen angels or descendants of such. Sasha is (apparently) an Anabo, descended from Eve's daughter and an angel (I guess). She's got a one-way ticket to Heaven. The only way for a Mephisto to find peace is to find an Anabo, which is really really rare, and then mark her (yeah), and convince her to stay with him and breed more Mephisto, and sort of redeem him, I guess? This is the Covenant. Basically. But Anabo are so rare, in fact, that it's pretty much finders-keepers. If you're Mephisto and you smell an Anabo, you find her, mark her as your territory and then ~~stalk her~~ convince her to love you, which she must eventually do, because you know, she's yours now. Oh, but be careful not to have sex with her too soon, because then she's completely marked, and your evil brother Eryx may kidnap her and murder her in front of you.
It's a great life, being an Anabo, right?

So yeah. This pretty much sums up the first 100 pages (plus some pledging your soul stuff, a deported mom and some stuff about a painting and OHMYGOD amounts of info-dumping. Oh, and religion. Lots of God, sort of.), and it just wasn't doing it for me. I just couldn't.

Now, I'm sure some people could, and I'm sure some of you out there will absolutely love this. I'm not even being facetious. But it is not in me to like anything about this, and there are too many books out there, waiting to be read.

Even though I'm sure I'll go on for longer than this, my review can basically be summed up into one sentence. My belief is that if Stephenie Meyer was a porn star instead of a Mormon, this is the book she would have written. (Of course, she also would have had to have had her Eureka! dream about Hell boys frolicking through a meadow instead of sparkly vampires, but I digress.)

Sasha meets Jax and learns the truth about herself very early on, and even though she is supposedly "terrified" and "repulsed" by him, she still manages to almost immediately engage in a make-out session. Throughout the book, she continues to "not want to be near him" and "just wants to be normal," but still manages to pounce on him on numerous occasions and even goes so far as to ditch the bra fairly early on (before the big sexy scene at the end which I'll get to in a minute). Jax looks at her and admires her strength of character and considers her tough even as a boy basically tries to molest her in the cafeteria while she sits there and cries about it instead of slapping the crap out of him. Oh - but don't worry. Those are tears of anger. Whew. And here I had been thinking it was just because she was a wuss.

Seriously. The characterization in this novel is little more than a joke. Not one character goes beyond being two-dimensional. Sasha's character makes absolutely no sense whatsoever - we are told she is tough and kick ass, yet she cries all the freakin time. We are told she is very hesitant and unwilling to take on her Anabo destiny, but even when she knows that kissing Jax constantly brings her closer to the edge (his spit, you know), she still jumps him like a prime cut of steak. WTF? Also, Jax is supposedly a son of Hell, and we are told that he engages in a varied array of horrible behavior, yet he spends the majority of the novel either mooning over Sasha like a moron in jr. high or being a complete overbearing jerk (see? Twilight!). So, hopefully you see the trend I'm going for her - we are told many things in the story, but never actually shown them. Same goes for the chemistry between the characters, they are supposedly struck mad by the love bug, are constantly all over each other - but I never felt even the smallest flicker of anything. Not good writing my friends, not good at all.

So yeah, this is very much a plot-driven novel. However, the book is pretty long and there are quite a few slow parts that dragged on a little too much. Probably because there were quite a few Sasha/Jax bonding scenes. Since I didn't feel like their relationship made a lick of sense, I was annoyed. But, I did manage to read the entire book, which does say something. If it had really been 100% horrible, no way could I have read the whole thing without throwing it across the room (theoretically since I read it on my Kindle). But then again, I had to put it down several times and never looked forward to picking it back up - it was more determination to see it through. Plus I wanted to get to the promised sexytimes (which yes, was pretty graphic for YA but also very short - I guess even immortal Hell boy teenagers don't have a lot of staying power).

To top things off, the ending of the book was a complete loss. Totally cuts off to rope you into wanting to read the sequel (which I think I'll be managing to resist thank you very much). Not really any resolution.

Anyway, this was obviously not the book for me. I have already seen some positive reviews out there however, so not everyone will agree with me! If you are a huge forbidden love fangirl and/or love Twilight-like relationships don't let me put you off reading the book - you'll undoubtedly enjoy it a lot more than I did. (If you aren't a fan of either of those things, run like the wind...the YA sexytimes aren't worth it.) (less)

Also, in the beginning there were resemblances to Unearthly that I had trouble shaking. Not just the cover, but the angelic girl and the skiing, my mind just kept flashing to Unearthly. But it isn’t long before this book takes it’s own very unique turns, and you completely forget you were ever able to make the comparison. (Seriously. I sat for ten minutes wondering what it was that distracted me in the beginning before I finally remembered.) (This probably makes the point irrelevant.)

Such unique characters. Sasha is such a sweet girl, and I loved watching her transform in more ways than one. Jax is the obvious choice for swoonworthiness, but I found myself gravitating toward Phoenix (his brother) on more than one occasion. He’s so solemn, and still managed to pull laughs out of me numerous times. Sasha’s family were out of this world insane, Jax’s family were the kind you would want to spend eternity with. The secondary characters were nearly as fascinating as our main characters.

There is a hot hot scene toward the end that had me to stopping to check if it was really YA or if I had imagined that part. If you know me, you know I have no problems with this. None whatsoever. The girl is eighteen, afterall. But I do think this would pose a problem for anyone who tends to shy away from sex in YA.

The Mephisto Covenant is an alluring love story, so perfectly plotted and perfectly paced. It did not disappoint.

The Mephisto Covenant was rushed in some places while slow going in others, but I just loved the concept for this book, the writing is well done and the characters were enjoyable and easy to get lost with.
All in all a good start to what looks like a promising series, which I'm looking forward to continuing.

I began reading with no expectations and was shocked when I fell in love instantly. It was very easy to get lost in Faegen's beautiful writing and to be captivated by her well-developed characters, thought out plot and cheeky humour.

When Sasha's mother is deported to Russia after being fired from her job with the State Department, Sasha is forced to move to Colorado to live with her hate-filled aunt, powerless uncle and cruel cousins. There, she runs into a boy named Jax, the same boy who saved her from being killed during a Ravens initiation meeting. The Ravens are a large cult, led by many all over the world but ultimately serve just one - Eryx, an immortal with a mission to overthrow Lucifer and take over Hell. Did I mention that he's Jax's brother? Running from evil skias, Sasha must work with Jax and his five other brothers to keep the ones she cares about safe and to keep herself alive.

Jax and his brothers are mephistos, people who capture skias and lost souls to rid the world of evil. Jax is intriguing, with his gorgeous physical appearance, kind heart, protectiveness, responsibility and attempts at aloofness towards Sasha. Trying desperately to keep her life light, without his dark influence, he falls more and more in love with her every day and fights the temptation he feels for her sexually, as engaging in such activity would alert Eryx to her existence at any given time. Sasha is an anabo, a being of light and purity. Only an anabo can fall in love with a son of Hell and redeem him in the eyes of God, which is why Eryx is so desperate to get his hands on her. Jax and Sasha are a sexy couple - drop dead sexy. Be prepared for lots of sexual tension, unhurried fondling and shameless staring. I loved it! Their relationship develops at a nice speed; slow enough to be realistic but fast enough to keep us interested and needy. The novel switches points of view between them and allows us insight into their very different worlds. Girl, boy, good, bad, anabo, mephisto, amateur, experienced…TICK!

I should stop talking. You just must read this. The characters are easy to connect with, the plot easy to follow, the mysteries exciting, and the romance sizzling. Even if you don't fall for Jax, I'm sure one of his brothers will tickle your fancy. Twists occur when you least expect and this novel will sate your hunger for a brilliant read. (less)

..because the story is just dragging and there’s too much “Oh I really love her and I must be with her” and “Oh, snaps-dizzles, he’s soooo hot, so I’m totally gonna trust him and not feel all weird that he tries to erase my memory. Nah, Imma keep on making out with him. It’s all good.” …. OOOOOkaaay.

First off, this book was fantastic. I loved it. I'm actually confused by some of the bad reviews I've seen. First off, this book was fantastic. I loved it. I'm actually confused by some of the bad reviews I've seen. I am not one of those people. I'm a Christian so I'm not turned off by books with God in them, however, I'm normally not a fan of Christian fiction. I just have not really found too many books in the genre that have held my interest for very long. But this was really good! Let's be clear though, I wouldn't categorize this as Christian fiction, it's definitely paranormal Young Adult, but with a lot of religious influences.

The world Trinity Faegen has created in this book is entirely unique and fascinating to me. One really cool thing is that, although I normally classify most Young Adult paranormals as Urban Fantasy, to me this was definitely a full-fledged Paranormal Romance. If you've read my recent post on Paranormal Romance vs. Urban Fantasy, you'll see how I personally view the difference. In this book, we have both Jax and Sasha's POV back and forth, and I read on the author's website that each book will be about a different one of Jax's five brothers. I LOVE that. An actual full out Young Adult PNR series? That makes me so happy!

But anyways, on to the story. It's kind of hard to explain the world here in a few short sentences. But basically Sasha is what's known as an Anabo, which (without spoiling too much) is a human who is touched by God. She basically is without temptation and is entirely pure. She doesn't realize she's different and very unique, because she can't see into other people's heads to understand that she doesn't feel emotions like rage and hate and jealousy like other people do. But because she's Anabo, Jax, who is a Mephisto, is immediately drawn to her. I'm not going to explain what a Mephisto is because it would spoil too much, but he is basically the polar opposite of Sasha. I'm also not going to get into the why's and the what's I'm sure you're asking right now, because discovering these little mysteries along the way was a big part of the fun while reading this. But trust me that it's unique and, I think, very interesting.

What I loved most about this book though was the relationship between Jax and Sasha. Despite it being what I would call a "fated" romance, which can sometimes feel rushed and unnatural, their relationship was extremely well written and gradual. I felt them getting closer and more attached to each other slowly as the book progressed. So even though the book spanned a short period of time, their relationship felt very realistic. Jax was also just such a sweetheart. Even though he feels like he isn't capable of love for most of the book, he certainly portrays a lot of love for Sasha throughout and it was really sweet to watch. Sasha I liked as well. She is a very patient and kind soul who you can't help but love.

Overall, I really enjoyed this. If you're wanting something a little different than the normal Young Adult paranormal, and you're not afraid of completely non-judgemental and definitely not pushy talk of faith and God, then I would recommend this. Faegen's writing style is beautiful and flows nicely, the world is well developed already, the premise is unique and fantastic, and the characters are intriguing and captivating. I definitely will be putting the next one on my to-read list as soon as it's announce. I can't wait to see which brother is up next, but I hope it's Phoenix!

I have to admit, in the beginning I was skeptical about this one. I wasn't sure I was really going to get into it... but boy was I wrong. I enjoyed this one SO much. It just kept getting better, and better, and BAM better! Not to mention, Jax is one sexy soul, oh hell yes he is! :) There are struggles, funny lines, and SUPER sexy times. Cannot wait for the next one!

Sasha was living a nightmare, her life was torn apart in one night. The night her father was murdered. He was an insurance man on a business trip in Russia, her family's homeland. Jax couldn’'t believe his luck. He was a Mephisto, basically, a son of hell. God had made a covenant with the Mephistos eons ago. If they could fight their nature, the hatred roaring through their veins, they could earn a chance at heaven like any other mortal. They had to love selflessly. Not just love selflessly, but love an Anabo, a girl who was just as light as he was dark. He never believed he would find an Anabo on a mission. Anabo’s always had those auras. But in a thousand years of being earthbound, he had never found one. At least not one for him. Now he had the chance, to win her heart and his own soul. The only problem? To love selflessly, it might just cost him his life.

This book was amazing. Just astounding. I can'’t get over the beauty. I love the artistic license Trinity used. Not to mention, the last line of the book: Killer, it just made me gasp. I raved over it during breakfast this morning. It just filled me with contentment. I’'ve never been happier with a book ending. The negatives would be cussing and an explicit relationship (mildly graphic.) but I absolutely recommend this book. When it comes out, I’'m buying one for my shelf. It must be a really good week for me because The Mephisto Covenant is going on The Shelf of Fame. In my opinion, this book is better than Becca Fitzpatrick’s Hush, Hush (…by football fields, better) it had a plot, plenty of conflicts (both physical and mentally) and better yet, I felt that the characters progressed throughout the series. As a Christian, I didn'’t agree with some of the biblical aspects, but most of them are interpretational. Nevertheless, let me remind you that it'’s fiction, and I still recommend the book.

The Brothers of Hell are the sons of Mephistopheles who is known in German Folklore as a Demon or the Devil himself and in this case he is the Gate Keeper of Hell. The brothers keep the souls of the damned away from their evil brother, Eryx who seeks to use the souls for his own nefarious purposes. The only way for a Son of Hell to find peace and redemption is in The Mephisto Covenant which is to not only fall in love with an Anabo but for that Anabo to love him back with her own free will. Trouble is, Anabos are rare and the five brothers have only seen one other in all their very long immortal lives.

Sasha meets Jax when she decides to join The Ravens-a group of kids from her school that seem to get whatever they wish for. Sasha lost her father to murder in Russia and the lack of investigation and suspects is making her grief all that much worse. When she gets to the ultra-secret meeting, things don’t go quite as she expected, this is where Sasha and Jax meet and from then on the story enfolds into an intricate web of spy conspiracies, danger, mystery, intrigue and let’s not forget bloomin’ romance with a hunka’ burnin’ love!

The Mephisto Covenant truly was written is such a way that there was always something happening, never a boring moment and it pretty much takes a manic pace from start to end which is what made it so hard to put down. The characters are feisty and funny, sad and grieving or battling and wrathful depending on the situation and it’s all done with aplomb! Superb flow with varying plots that intermingle perfectly, something I’m amazed at when a seasoned author accomplishes let alone a debut author!

Then there is Ajax "Jax" and his group of strangely hot brothers. They're all...you guessed it...sons of Hell (whatever that means). In order to regain the pureness of their souls, they must "love completely" with an Anabo--a descendant of heaven. Which...Sasha just so happens to be. (Surprise, surprise.)
I said earlier that this novel is compelling. It is. Is it a little cliche? Well, what paranormal-YA novel isn't? Though this is probably the only YA novel I've read this month that has actually kept me on the edge of the seat, and made me want to applaud the author.
From the get-go, Sasha and Ajax are...doomed. He doesn't think she can love him because of his "Hell" status, and she doesn't think she can love him because of what he and his brothers do for a living--throw people into 'Hell on Earth' in order to trap their souls from their evil brother, Eyrx. (I know, I suck at summarizing this stuff, so read the damn description.)
Jax is a pretty cool character--I loved his chapters. They aren't those "good guy" chapters that make us girls squeal and think "omg, he's so perfect!" they're actually real, and a little strange. I mean, c'mon. He's a freakin' DEMON (or something like it) so why would his thoughts be all fluffy unicorns and glitter (ah-hem, like some guys).
Sasha's character is interesting, too. She isn't an air-head, but some of the stuff she thinks/does is unbelievable (really, would you disrobe your self in front of a dude you just met...Uh, I hope you say no). Though I think I liked Jax's mind better. When he's with his brothers, prepare to laugh!
Anyways, this novel was really awesome, and I think it's the only one I've given a 5-star rating too this month. I hope the next book in the series focuses on Phoenix's (one of Jax's brothers) redemption, because his story is hearbreaking and made me cry. Which I hate doing. Seriously.
This is a huge, ramble-fest of crap for a review, but hey, it got a 5-star rating, so take from that what you will.(less)

I am so happy that I got to read this as an ARC, it is such a great book! The book basically starts with Sasha going to a meeting of some sort of secret club that is in truth organized by Eryx. There, she is saved from death by Jax and his brothers and they discover she is Anabo. He messes a little with her mind to make her forget him and promises to woo her the regular way.

I started this novel with some hesitation. I read some of the early mixed reviews and was not sure what to expect. Honestly, the first couple of chapters were so dark and unsettling I almost did not continue. I am glad I did because once I was further in and the complex plot began to unfold I was drawn in and fascinated by the new twists on some old religious ideas. This is a book about the ongoing battle between Heaven and Hell; good vs. evil but with new players. The damnable villain is not the devil or Lucifer as you would expect; instead it is someone far worse. It is Eryx a son of Hell. He is cunning, deceptive, and has his sights upon taking over Hell's domain. If he succeeds people will lose their free will. Enter Eryx's seven younger brothers, they are what stands between him and his ultimate goal. Their mission is to stop Eryx from collecting souls. These boys are tormented, lost and not recognized by God. Their only hope for salvation is to find an Anabo, a daughter descended from Eve. An Anabo is light and pure and without evil. An Anabo will bring them peace, happiness and recognition from God. The only problem light and dark naturally repel each other. Can Jax and Sasha, two opposites, come together?

What I Liked:
*This is an intricate novel, drawing upon religion and mythology. There is so much information thrown at you, at times it is overwhelming. Once I processed it all, I was so impressed and intrigued. This book has you thinking about the complexity of free will and the outcome of our choices. It is disheartening to see how easy it could be to woo someone to rescind their soul to the blackness. All it takes is a little whisper, a promise of a heart's desire. It is truly mind numbing. I am telling you it is a lot to wrap your head around!
*Jax and his six brothers; the sons of Hell. These boys are the descendants of Mephistopheles, the angel of death. It seems unfair that they are punished because of their birthright. They are supposed to be dark angels but they are funny and handsome; think the Matrix; dark dusters,shades and devilish good looks. Jax especially is charming, protective, kind, respectful and patient. I found it hard to believe they were supposed to be bad especially since they fight evil and seek God's acknowledgement. Trust me, after reading this book girls will be lining up to date a son of Hell.
*The overall story was deep and complicated but thankfully drew to a satisfactory ending. There is no dreadful cliffhanger but enough seeds are sown for a continuation. I look forward to future installments involving the boys. I am eager to see if they can all find the redemption that they deserve.

And The Not So Much:
*The character Sasha, the Anabo drove me crazy. Yes, I understand that she is not capable of great evil but to watch her continually get shoved around was frustrating. She was constantly crying and running to Jax, yet she kept refusing him because she couldn't accept fusing her light soul to the dark. Her wishy-washy behavior drove me to distraction. Thankfully, in the end she finally showed some gumption.
*This book is lengthy. While I enjoyed the complexities of the good vs. evil they were overshadowed by the constant struggle between Sasha and Jax. She loves him, she is repulsed by him, she wants him to go, no wait stay. Over and over until it almost became too much. Luckily, I was invested in the story so I was able to overlook it. I understand that this is an essential point but it was a little overdone and it made the book long.
*Aside from the brothers and Sasha the majority of the players in this novel are malicious, twisted and cruel. You are disgusted by almost everyone surrounding Sasha. I did not enjoy reading about all the dark souls. It really made me wonder why Sasha wanted to renounce Jax and stay amidst such astounding evil. At times the constant malevolence is depressing and unsettling. It made me anxious. I would have preferred a few more characters who were not tormented.

The Mephisto Covenant was a book that exceeded my expectations. It is a complicated, new spin on some old ideas of Light vs. Dark. This book expounds on the gray area in between with the brothers of Hell. You also are shown that there is great evil but thankfully there is also good. I am surprised this book is tagged as a young adult. Many readers drawn in by the beautiful cover expecting a sweet romance will be astonished by the complexities of this book. For this reason and due to the dark content and some mature sexual content; I recommend this for older young adult readers. Give this a chance, it is an interesting book that I really did enjoy. Oh, and remember if a vagrant approaches you at a church be compassionate, you never know who it might be.

RECEIVED THRU NETGALLEY

Fallen angels are for 2011 what Vampires were for 2009, and author Trinity Faegen seals it with this, the first book in THE MEPHISTO COVENANT series. Admittedly, I was shallow and was attracted to this book by its gorgeous cover (I want that dress!), but once I hit page 28, I was sucked into the story and could not stop reading.

Trinity has put a fascinating twist on various religious themes in her book. By putting a creative spin on some well known Biblical figures, she was able to create a rich, intriguing mythology and introduce some rather unique characters that I enjoyed getting to know. From the Sons of Hell to Sasha, the Anabo whom is a descendant of the daughter of Eve, to the twist with her Russian mother and the KGB to the CIA, this book has a such a variety of interesting characters. Not to mention a romance I enjoyed despite the fact it falls into a cliche of other YA romances, but there was just something different about Sasha & Jax. Yes they are both tortured souls, because they want each other, but there's so many "what if's" and things that could go wrong that they shouldn't be together, but yet they can't help but fall in love with each other.

Sasha for me started off as character I really liked getting to know. She's an Anabo, which is rare (as in she's the second one the Brothers of Hell have ever found), she's of course very Godly, she's innocent, and embodies everything that is good. She doesn't get tempted, she doesn't stray from the path so to speak and has a one way ticket into heaven. Like a few other angels books I have recently read, I found myself starting to get really frustrated with her half way through the book. Part of that is due to the fact she's an angel, and yet she falls into the human trap of emotions, and temptations, and the other part of it has to do with some of the repetitiveness of her constant worries and being torn with her feelings for Jax and not wanting to be an Anabo. By the middle of the book she started to really annoy me, which was unfortunate because she has some great character traits. She does redeem herself towards the end of the book, but by then I wasn't as invested with her character like I had started out being.

I really enjoyed Jax and his brothers, also know as the Brothers of Hell aka the sons of Mephistopheles. I found their mythology to be the most creative and engaging to read about. Jax is a Mephisto and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know more about him. He's bound to earth with his brothers to collect the souls of the damned and to defeat their older brother Eryx. Talk about pure evil, Eryx is someone whom I wouldn't ever want to come across. Jax is the main love interest and despite being a Brother of Hell, this guy has a conscience. I really enjoyed seeing how he changes after he meets Sasha. Their relationship is one that's destined and also troubled, because there's huge risks for both of them in being together.

One of the things that intrigued about both the mythology and their relationship is the way Jax's Mephisto infects Sasha each time they kiss. I liked that anthology because she's light and he's dark. Throughout the book, Trinity isn't afraid to show how dark some of the characters turn when they decide to "sell their soul" or lose themselves in their selfish endeavors. Let's just say that Sasha's side effects to turning are ones similar to PMS. She's someone who could bring a guy to his knees if they ticked her off (which she does), she starts to feel angry (which she has every right to be) and she's someone who's words can cut like a knife. There's a scene between her and Jax's brother Phoenix that really ticked me off w/ her. I was applaud she would say the things she does to him.

Phoenix is another fabulous character that I really enjoyed getting to know. Jax and Phoenix have a great relationship and the two of them really made the story for me. It's ironic that these two are the ones that I felt did the most good through out the story. I also felt more of an emotional connection to these two. Despite having a broken heart that Phoenix has been trying to get over for over a hundred years, his wit and sarcasm was written in at just the right moments within the story's dark plotline.

With it's captivating cover and an incredibly creative mythology that takes the latest craze with angels and demons to a whole new level, Trinity Faegen's debut is one that is both engaging and intriguing and was in the end a good, fascinating read. This is one of those books that I'm torn on. I started out really enjoying this book, then around the middle I put the book down, and picked it up again, thankfully, because some of the things I was bothered with are redeemed by the end of the book. There are sensual scenes, a non graphic sex scene that do go along with the story's mythology between the Sasha & Jax, there's also some violence, an attempted rape scene and some language making this book one I'd recommend to older YA readers.(less)

I did however have serious issues with the way this story flowed, as well as character interactions.

I'll start with the flow. The writing is wonderful and the story had a great amount of potential, and I feel that a lot of people will enjoy this because it's somewhat original. I found the plot to be dodgy, one minute you are getting use to something and then scene changes or the characters personality suddenly seems to be different. I understand the character development where Sasha is concerned over the entire course of the book, but a few times in the beginning she comes off as 'trying to hard'. Jax is your typical bad boy who falls in love with the 'normal' good girl, he has a twist but it's essentially the same. It many ways it felt like Twilight to me since it read in the same mindless way, it's a quick and easy read but it won't leave any sort of positive lasting impression on me. Despite the easy flow of this I found it very hard to read and concentrate on, and I had quite a few moments where I simply wanted to quit reading it and review the bit I had managed to read.

Now for the characters. I personally didn't feel anything for any of the characters, except annoyance. Eryx didn't bother me at all, which I feel is an essential trait for a bad guy. Jax and Sasha's relationship was annoying and flip-flopped more then fish out of water. Melanie's character just came off as another aspect that seemed "over worked", she was horrible like she was suppose to be but it was so over the top that it became childish and dramatic. There are times in the story where half of a conversation seem utterly pointless. I understand the need for normal conversations but there is a point where it crosses the line to 'filler' and becomes tedious, and this book has that problem at times. Also the word 'spit' is never an attractive way to describe a kiss and despite the fact that I know spit is involved I was repulsed at the mental image. The intimate scene I found to be too detailed for a young adult novel, and on the side of tasteless.

Overall I obviously didn't enjoy this book, and I can't say I'd recommend it in an everyday book talk. I think those who enjoyed Twilight would like this, however only to those who over 16 because of the adult content.

It was amazing! AMAZINGLY BARFING! It's fatal!

Why?

1.Story First few pages was fine. I actually did enjoyed it. It was fast paced, interesting. Anyway, the scene does not get stuck. The story relating the Bible was no doubt interesting. The Love Story was TERRIBLE. That earns one star! *claps*

2.CharactersThe characters are awful.
