EYES OF EMERALD is a book that I co-authored. My deceased father told me this story a few times, about a female cousin of ours that begins in 1930, in NYC. Her name was Esther, and she was the daughter of immigrants. Esther became the first girl in her family to graduate from high school, but it was the depression era. An older friend was able to get her a job where she worked. This was the beginning of the life Esther would lead. She was supposed to marry a man of her faith, have children, be a ...more

Eyes of Emerald: Harvey Stelman and Andy Nathan

Family traditions, cultures, understanding and bridging the gap between the ways of your parents and the young is just part of what authors Harvey Stelman and Andy Nathan impart to readers in this heartfelt story that takes readers back to the 1930’s living in New York. Harvey Stelman shares this real life story as he and his cousin create a mosaic of the lives of two families: The Rothsteins and the Changs. Eyes of Emerald creates a picture of an

"Eyes of Emerald" by Harvey Stelman is a fantastic story about Esther Rothstein, a young Jewish woman in the 1920s and 1930s and her amazing life story. A great character from the beginning, Esther has her own ideas and achieves great things, professionally and personally, against her family wishes.
I love the era of the 1930s with its promises and big developments, the depiction of immigrant life and the American dream.
She meets equally fascinating friends and characters and marries outside of h

Harvey Stelman and Andrew Nathan have written a lovely story, "Eyes of Emerald." It has the feel of "The Princess Bride" in that there's a storyteller and every so often, you get to see it from the other side where the people are listening to the story. It's a compelling story about love. I don't want to spoil it with any details here, but it definitely kept me reading. I wanted to know what would happen to Esther and Sammy. I thought the representation of the time period and the different ethni ...more

This is a beautiful true-life story that can become a classic of Depression Era immigration to the American Promised Land. Esther graduates High School in 1933 in New York City and the story follows her through 1939, taking a jump to the middle of the 20th Century for one poignant moment.

In 1933, she is the first in her Jewish-immigrant line to earn a HS diploma and this is celebrated. However, she would have liked to have had a boyfriend as well - a potential husband. She did not have that.

A great story by a new voice. The copy I happened to read had a few editiing needs, but I understand that's been taken care of.

The story was wonderful - like being told a story by an old friend. The meshing of cultures, a deep love and more than a few hitches along the way.

Try it, you'll like it.
