<default_description>When John Cameron Butler was a child, he was captured in a raid on the Pennsylvania frontier and adopted by the great warrior Cuyloga. Renamed True Son, he came to think of himself as fully Indian. But eleven years later his tribe, the Lenni Lenape, has signed a treaty with the white men and agreed to return their captives, including fifteen-year-old True Son. Now he must go back to the family he has forgotten, whose language is no longer his, and whose ways of dress and behavior are as strange to him as the ways of the forest are to them. A beautifully written, sensitively told story of a white boy brought up by Indians, The Light in the Forest is a beloved American classic.</default_description>

Considering this book was written in the 50's when the government was still doing the enforced boarding school thing and their big relocation project to "civilize" native people, this book was surprisingly fair.
An amazing classic - a tale of a boy of European descent living among Native Americans. He is given back to the settler community as he grows up, but he longs for the society in which he had been raised - and at the end is forced to choose between his people and the adopted ones. It offers a good lo...more...

This is an older book, and some of its images of the Lenapes are inaccurate. For instance, it transfers to Indian men a white man's stereotypes of women instead of presenting accurately the honored place of women in Lenape society.
One of my favorite books. The main character is a white boy, kidnapped and raised by a local indian tribe, who then is returned to his biological family when he is a young teen. This set up enables the reader to be able to see the conflict between whites and indians from both sides. Great book!

I would actually give this book a 3.5 rating, but am not willing to stretch it to a 4. I was definitely moved after reading the novel, however do remember noting minor setbacks in the writing. I have to give credit where it is due, though, and commend the author on a well-written work.
