I read this book because I love dogs and I'm a masochist.

Let me say first that some love this book and to be fair I never read it except to get an idea of the story. You will find in my books low ratings for Black Beauty, The Yearling, Old Yeller and any books that have the "pain of life motif" in common. By the way this includes Cold Mountain. Look up my review and you'll see I try to give recognition that it's well written but just not a book I can like. And these ratings are how I feel and what I think of these books. Some will say how they love th...more

1. I decided to read this book because I read it several years ago and remembered it as being a good book, but couldn't really remember the story. I re-read it several weeks ago, and I found it just as sad as the first time I read it.

2. This book completes the following categories: A book with a male main character, a book that teaches you about a culture other than my own, a book recommended to me by a member of my family and a book which has been made into a film. *

3. The character I found mo...more

I chose this book because my friend recommended this book because he thought it was a very good book. This book is about a young boy named Travis who finds a dog that he names Old Yeller. Since his father is gone, it his job to protect his family along with some help with his dog. Travis and Old Yeller go through many adventures together, and stay together no matter what. In the end, Old yeller gets bitten by a wolf who had rabies, and Travis had to kill him. My favorite quote from this story is...more

I got this book on CD for me and Benson to listen to in the car. I thought we'd bond over this sweet dog story. After a chapter, I decided it was too politically UN-correct for my son! I know that sounds ridiculous, but... the 5-year old boy was hurling rocks at his brother. The 14 year old boy was throwing rocks at a dog. The 14 year old boy was kicking a dog and kept threatening to kill it. Shooting animals (for hunting and for fun) was a major part of the book. Also, the 14 year old boy was c...more

I'm working on a unit of dog stories and I felt that I had to include this old chestnut (ie, classic). I've been aware of this book (maybe because of the movie?) for as long as I can remember, but I've never actually read it. Well, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it REALLY does hold up. Set in 1860s Hill Country Texas, the setting had an irresistible appeal for me as many of my own ancestors trekked into Texas from Tennessee during that time. It was fun to recognise certain aspects of th...more

This book was set in the late 1860s Texas. A young boy, Travis Coates, is left to take care of his family and be the man of the house while his father is away on a cattle drive. The book is clearly a coming of age story, because the main character deals with tough decisions and losses.
Travis is left to do most of the farm work, with little help from his younger brother Arliss. Arliss finds a stray thieving dog that he becomes quite fond of. They start to get into trouble when they play in the d...more

For my February book I read Old Yeller by Fred Gibson. The title has the word "yeller" in it, a word that many people with southern dialect, use to say "yellow", this word could also be in the title to describe the way that our titular character Old Yeller howls, instead of the normal "woof" sound, it sounds more like yelling.
The story revolves around Travis Coates, a boy who is left in charge of his fathers cattle ranch while his father is making cattle drive in the 1860's. When a yellow dog...more

Gipson’s simply told tale of a boy and his dog living in the Texas Hill Country of 1860 is a genuine classic of children’s literature. Travis Coates is only 14 years old, but while his father is off for months on a cattle drive, he is the “man of the house,” left on the homestead with his mother and younger brother, 5-year-old Arliss. A stray yellow mutt of a dog, with one ear virtually chewed off, and only a stump of a tail, shows up one day. He’s a no good, thieving rascal – taking their meat...more

Travis Coates was fourteen years old when his pa left to join with a band of neighbors and herd their steers to Abilene and get “cash money”. Before he left, his pa put him in charge of things and told him to take care of his ma and Arliss while he was away. That was a big job for a fourteen year old boy in Texas in the 1860’s. Then along came that old yeller dog—big and ugly. Travis wanted no part of the stray and tried to run him off. But Arliss wanted that dog and he stayed. In no time Travis...more

The book was a charming peice of work that describes the loving relationship of a boy and his dog.
The adventures that they go through while learning to love and accept eachother's strengths and weaknesses really move the plot along. The diction was straight on with an accurate interpretation of the story's setting. I was surprised at how long it actualy took me to read, I was hoping to polish it off within a few hours, but it took me a few weeks to read it, kind of a shame when I had all the pot...more

It came clear to me that Mama was right. We couldn't take the risk. And from everything I had heard, I knew that there was very little chance of Old Yeller's escaping of the sickness. It was going to kill something inside of me to do it, but I knew then that I had to shoot my big yeller dog.

Travis Coates is a 14-year-old boy, left alone to protect his mother and younger brother on his family's 19th-century Texas homestead. When his father goes on a trip leaving him to "act a man's part," he throws himself into his new responsibilities. But the challenges of feeding and protecting his family prove to be greater than his boy's abilities, and he comes to depend on and love the stray dog which adopts their family.

The story follows chapter after chapter of gritty, riveting and often fun...more

I don't remember ever hearing or reading the book as a child, but I remember that we watched the movie in school. So now, as a teacher, I wanted my students to know that a good story does not always have a happy ending. I read the book and found that it was so much better than the movie (and noticeably different, too). I read the book to my students -- they were amazed by the descriptions, the adventure, and how simple yet complicated life was for the boys in the story. They cried... there were...more

As words can depict someone's emotions and thoughts,"Old Yeller", was able to depict a whole different perspective of words. The author, Fred Gipson had immensely contradicted with the fact that love will ever end. He set a huge message out there that love does not always end the way it should and clearly means that love will never end but will stop for one at the point of death. The way that Fred Gipson expressed his thoughts with the usage of characters and the make up of a story was that he...more

Old Yeller by Fred Gipson (Unit 1)

What did I like and dislike about the novel?

Old Yeller was a heartwarming story, and I found it quite suspenseful at times. Yeller, a stray dog, found shelter at Travis’s cottage. Travis’s mama and his brother loved the creature, but Travis hated the dog. Yeller consumed their stored meat and stole from neighboring cottages. Throughout the book, Yeller proved to be a help on the farm, and he gained a companionship with Travis. The iron...more

I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I somehow survived my childhood without ever having watched the movie version of Old Yeller. I had never heard of the book on which it was based til recently. I'm so glad I read it. A great tale of colonial life in America, and all the hardships that entails- deadly encounters with varied wild animals who are out to kill you, the daily struggle to exist and annoying little brothers. Written in the engaging first person voice of Travis Coates, who at...more

Reading aloud with the kids, I was fine until Travis's papa was talking to him about Old Yeller:

"That was rough," he said. "That was as rough a thing as I ever heard tell of happening to a boy. And I'm mighty proud to learn how my boy stood up to it. You couldn't ask any more of a grown man."

and then later, when his papa is trying to encourage a proper response to life's adversity:

"It's not a thing you can forget. I don't guess it's a thing you ought to forget. What I mean is, things like that...more

Pg 1. "He made me so mad at first that I wanted to kill him. Then, later, when I had to kill him, it was like having to shoot some of my own folks." Very straightforward. Tells you exactly what your getting... What kind of book am I reading??

Pg. 7 "Then he'd had to go act a fool and get himself killed." Did, did he now?

Pg. 60 " After that, I couldn't do enough for Old Yeller... What if he did fall over and yell bloody murder every time I looked crossways at him?" :)I love that dog:)

Pg. 81 "And o...more

This is the first book that ever made me cry. I would read it during my study period in the 4th grade each day for almost 2 weeks (it was my class copy-- so I had to keep putting it back and hoping no one else would take it). I held my tears back until the lunch bell rang and then ran for the bathroom to cry. It may have been the first time I realized how incredible it was to read.

“What I mean is, things like that happen. They may seem might cruel and unfair, but that's how life is a part of the time. But that isn't the only way life is. A part of the time, it's mighty good. And a man can't afford to waste all the good part, worrying about the bad parts. That makes it all bad” 20 people liked it
