After reading Burn Bright and Angel Arias last year, all I wanted to do was find out how everything concluded – Naif’s conquest, the Ripers’ ruination, the night creatures’ survival… and Ixion’s illumination. I wanted to know more, experience more, discover more; and I sure did get more than I had hoped.

Shine Light was a fantastic final instalment in the Night Creatures series. If you had any questions or speculations from the previous two books then have no fear. Answers slowly come to light as we journey from Ruzalia’s airship to Danskoi, beginning to end. Have you ever wondered why Ixion was forever, eternally in darkness? Shine light, burn bright, and READ THIS BOOK, baby bats, because then you will learn why. Marianne de Pierres bleeds the pages of Shine Light with wonder, pleasure, knowledge… and most of all, hope for a brighter world.

In Shine Light Naif and those she befriended along the way in Burn Bright and Angel Arias return to Ixion to uncover the many secrets and mysteries that have been buried beneath the feet of its ignorant and carousing youth and veiled behind a sky of darkness. As Naif and crew learn about the truths of Ixion, so does the reader – truths continue to spring from the pages, like mice triggering traps for some wanted goodness they rarely ever come across. And once Naif and co. do, they use their new-found knowledge to bring good, hope, and light to Ixion.

This series has a splendid cast of characters; each character changes in ways we do not expect them to, especially in Shine Light. I loved the addition of Liam in Angel Arias, and to learn more about him and the person he is – or was – in Shine Light was great, as well as his relationship with Suki (Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!) and the overarching role he played/s in Ixion’s past, present and future. One character that changed considerably was Lenoir. Lenoir sacrificed a lot to help Naif and company achieve what they set out to do, even if it harmed him. After all, there is no good without sacrifice. And sacrifice he sure did. And Naif and Jarrod and Emilia… all the feels!

Shine Light was complete; the Night Creatures series is complete. However, when I reached the end of this book I was a bit surprised. Sure, I was surprised at everything that happened in the last thirty or so pages, but I was really surprised at how fast the final pages and climax was; it came and it went. I just wish there was more conflict, that it was drawn out, and that there was something… more. It concluded all too fast considering how much of the book focused on uncovering the truths and righting them. It ended great, just not the great I was expecting. But I still really, really enjoyed it! And the very end – I. Loved. It! I continue to wonder what happens next (I found it quite reminiscent of The Phantom of the Opera, however that is just my interpretation). If there’s ever an opportunity to return to Ixion, I’ll be there with streamers in my hands and bells on my feet.

My heart is still racing from the exhilarating read that is Shine Light. I reviewed Angel Arias earlier this week and I feel the same way I did about it only it was even better.

I don't want to repeat myself too much and I don't want to spoil anything for readers who are yet to discover this series but I will say that I am so impressed by this series as it has improved with each book. There’s a sense in which Ixion, and those who are brought there have, throughout the trilogy, been presented as being analogous to the angst-ridden teenage years: the desire to fit in, to be different and indifferent, to regard oneself as immortal. In this space, all the confused and driven psychology and emotional states of youth are realised, personified and become places and spaces as well – and it’s terrifying.
All the books have explored the various pressures of adolescence; how there are those who will stray from the “paths” – knowingly and unknowingly, willingly and unwillingly – and reap the consequences of their choices. But what the books also reveal is how those whom young people trust with their care can abuse that responsibility; exploit youthfulness for their own benefit and that realisation is the most disturbing of all – for everyone.
Through Naif, the young people of Ixion (and others) are given the opportunity to come into the light of their own power and choices and thus shine. But will they take it? Will Naif be able to resist Lenoir’s allure and the hold he has over her or will she succumb? Will Ixion surrender its terrible secret in time?
You’ll have to read this marvellous book to find out.

I started to read Burn Bright, the first in the Night Creatures trilogy, after enrolling in a workshop run by QWC and hosted MDP. I quickly read Burn Bright and Angel Arias and couldn’t wait for the final novel. Luckily for me, I won the Shine Light as a lucky door prize at the workshop, and started reading that night. (What a thrill to read the conclusion of a trilogy before it’s officially released.)

Fast paced and action packed, Shine Light races towards the shocking climax that sees the teens in a pitched battle against the night creatures. de Pierres brings together the characters we have met over the preceding installments of the series, Rollo, Suki, Markes, Ruzalia, Dark Eve and Lenoir to name just a few and all play a part in this finale. With the Ripers split and the night creatures restless, danger is ever present for Naif and the rebels as they search for the answers they need. What they discover is the origins of the island chains that are trapped in darkness, and a way to shine a light on the truth.

Naif is almost unrecognizable from the timid baby bat that came to Ixion in search of her brother in Burn Bright. In Shine Light she comes into her own, loyal, determined and fearless she refuses to give up even if the cost is her own life. Naif also has to deal with her relationship with Lenoir, the Riper to whom she is bonded, and the way in which her actions will affect him.
Several of the other characters readers are familiar with also have to make sacrifices in the story. Liam is forever changed, Kero has to confront his grief and the rebel gangs have to put aside their rivalries to create a united front.

While Shine Light deftly concludes the trilogy, tying up loose ends and revealing Ixion's secrets, it seems to me that the author has left a thread that could be picked up again in the future. The Night Creatures has proved to be an exciting and creative series blending fantasy and science fiction. I am sure fans of the series will be satisfied with the climax and will no doubt hope de Pierres shines on.(less)

The Night Creatures trilogy is very much a story in three acts. Burn Bright introduced the world and highlighted some obvious problems, Angel Arias was mainly about a fact finding mission to uncover what was really going on in the world and Shine Light ties the facts in with the world building and has the main character fix some of the problems. Although I read each book as it came out, I strongly feel that this series would be most optimally enjoyed when read together in a single block. The sequels rely heavily on what's gone before and so I definitely wouldn't recommend starting reading anywhere other than book 1, which is also where important world building happens.

Armed with some of the secrets of her world, Naif returns to the teenage dystopia/utopia of Ixion to help those left behind and doomed to die. Along the way she finds a way to save them from their semi-inevitable deaths and how to fix some of the strange things that were wrong with the world (beyond the societal problems, I mean).

What I liked about Shine Light was the return to softly science fictional world building hinted at in Burn Bright. Angel Arias was more about the society than the world and made me thing that the SF-y hints would be ignored. Happily, Shine Light delivers on the premise hinted at in book 1 and the reveals and resolution were satisfactory. Also, unlike many superficially similar YA books, Naif doesn't set out to overturn their society, but rather to eliminate a more external issue. The end result might equate to saving the world, but it struck me as a more plausible kind of world-saving for a group of teenagers to be doing.

Overall, I recommend this series to fans of speculative YA who might be looking for something a bit different. There are otherworldly creatures around, but they aren't traditional vampires or werewolves and so forth. The setting-vibe is uncommon and added to the enjoyment of the read. I do, however, strongly suggest reading all three books in a row. In the end, I think I would have preferred it to be released as one longer book, rather than three short ones.

I love this series, but this book gets one less star than the other two because it ends too abruptly. It needed one more chapter atleast or an epilogue. I wanted to know what happened next. What kind of society would they build? How would the surviving Ripers live on? Would Lenoir and Naif meet again? etc etc. There are just too many unanswered questions. I feel let down with this ending.

I was sent this book by my local branch of Random House. It was unsolicited which means that I didn’t ask for a copy but they send it out to their reviewers in the hope that they would pick it up and review it. And I did because it is written by an Aussie author who built a fan base for this series amongst us Australians as well as readers overseas. While I have not read the first two books, I was engaged from the first page of this story that is the conclusion to her Night Creatures trilogy.

A juicy and tender read, the only reason I would stop was because I fell asleep and knew that if I want to savour this book, I needed to be alert. I picked it up again this morning (6 Nov) and took about a half hour to finish it off. Naif and her friends she picked up on her journey in the previous book are heading back to Ixion, the island of ever-night’ where she is determined that she will not return so that her friends and family still there would be safe. However, the time has come for her to return to discover the secrets and mysteries of the Ixion and what better way to return to Danskoi than in Ruzalia’s airship?

It’s time to ask questions about the darkness and about the Rippers, the creatures ruling the Ixion, and it is time to get answers. Why is Ixion in darkness and is there a way to end it? How can they save the young people who are clueless to the sinister plans that Elders have for them? There are the rebels, including her brother Clash and her friend Suki, but they do not know everything that Naif knows and it is time for the rebels to gain back control of Ixion.

She may have the rebels on her side but they are being watched and she needs the one person that most of her friends won’t trust as he is one of the Rippers and leader amongst them, Lenoir. In addition to the fact that her friend Liam is part Ripper and another cause of worry, she going to need her skills to convince them to help with her knowledge.

Marianne De Pier has written the conclusion to her trilogy that is fitting to a series that seems enchanting and breathtaking based on my reading only the last novel. She pays attention to past events in a manner that makes the story not hard to follow, despite some of the characters’ back-stories taking place in the first two books. On that basis alone, I’m curious to read those books to discover reasons for name changes and to better understand certain relationships, including the one that features at the end.

I don’t know what to make of the conclusion as it seems to me not a satisfying end on one level, and I won’t spoil things and give it away in my review. But for me, it was a bit of a surprise considering how the author has built on the relationship of the two characters in question, Naif and Lenoir. I hope this means that a return to Ixion is possible given that note on the ending and considering, too, the relationship between Liam and Suki.

It was a nice enough read, although seeing as it ended I'm half-expecting the fourth book to come: there was no definite conclusion; sure, the fight did end, but no hint was given at what will the characters do, where they will go, or how they will live from now on. An epilogue or few words in the end of the book about life some time after would be sufficient.

As of now, it feels as though the author is thinking of the possibility to write another story.

After my fascination with Burn Bright and disappointment with Angel Arias, I didn’t know what to expect from Shine Light. My major problem with Angel Arias was lack of answers. However, Shine Light delivers what it promised and that makes up for the lack of excitement this book had to offer.

This is a tense, fast-paced and satisfying conclusions to one of the most original YA series I’ve ever read.

There are answers to all the big questions, not to mention plenty of tension, action, and intrigue.

The ending is open enough for readers to form their own conclusions – or for Marianne to return to this world down the track (which, personally, I hope she does).

Shine Light is very short – I knocked it over in a couple of hours – but packs a mighty punch that I’m reeling from! It’s a poignant and fitting conclusion to The Night Creatures series and admirably brings the adventure to a close.

Ohhhhhh. Another one of my favorite series just ended too (with a big bang). I have never felt so rushed in this book before, but looking at the writing style now, it almost did. VERY short paragraphs with very short details, yet it somehow is succinct enough to make the whole eerie Ixion, Night Creatures and the whole story.

Die Geschichte wird wieder wunderbar von Marianne de Pierres erzählt. Das Buch bringt wieder einige Geheimnisse mit sich, Spannung wird aufgebaut und Rätsel werden gelüftet. Auch Gefühle kommen in diesem Band nicht zu kurz, jedoch wird das Hauptthema auf den Schluss der Reihe ausgelegt. Man erfährt wieder einiges über die Night Creatures, warum sie auf Ixion sind, was es mit der immer währenden Dunkelheit auf sich hat und warum eigentlich die Uthers so sind, wie sie sind. Der Konflikt zwischen Lenoir und Brand und den anderen Kreaturen sowie den Menschen und den Rebellen geht in die letzte finale Runde.

Leider hat das Buch nur knapp 200 Seiten, weshalb die Geschichte recht schnell erzählt wird, und das Ende ein offenes Ende ist. Ich persönlich finde das gar nicht so schlecht, da ich mir meinen eigenen Teil denken kann und das hat mich dann als Leser auch befriedigend zurückgelassen. Andere werden wahrscheinlich ihre Probleme damit haben, aber alle Antworten auf ungeklärte Fragen werden wir Leser bestimmt sowieso nicht bekommen, von daher muss man sich sowieso mit dem Ende zufriedengeben. Wie gesagt, fand ich das Ende nicht schlecht, gerade weil nicht alles zu 100% aufgeklärt wurde, man kann so seine eigene Fantasie noch mit hineinbringen. Hätte das Buch mehrere Seiten gehabt, wären wahrscheinlich die ein oder anderen Leser wohler über das Ende gestimmt gewesen.

Die Figuren sind genauso wie in den anderen Bänden authentisch und facettenreich gestaltet worden. Vor allem in diesem Band merkt man wie die Persönluchkeiten sich entwickelt haben und wie sie untereinander agieren. Der ein oder andere ist mir zwar etwas auf die Nerven gegangen, wie z.B. Markus oder Emilia. Aber nichts desto trotz haben sie mit zu der Geschichte beigetragen und waren doch wichtig für die weitere Handlung. Am interessantesten fand ich trotzdem noch immer Naif, Charlonge und die Night Creatures. Schade nur das man nicht allzuviel von Lenoir in diesem Band hatte :(

Den Schreibstil der Autorin kann man schnell lesen und man bekommt direkt ein Bild von der Situation die sie gerade beschreibt, also alles was ich gelesen habe konnte ich in meinem Kopf direkt in Bilder umwandeln. Jedoch finde ich sollte Marianne de Pierres sich mehr an Landschaftasbeschreibungen bzw. Orte üben. Oftmals beschreibt sie zwar wie etwas ausschaut, und das auch mehrere Zeilen lang, trotzdem fällt es dem Leser schwer sich dies vorzustellen, da sie mehr Andeutungen macht und nicht konkrete Sachen beschreibt. Ich finde darin sollte sie sich nocht verbessern, gerade in dieser Reihe ist mir das besonders aufgefallen.

Die Gestaltung des Covers sieht mal wieder, wie seine Vorgänger auch, fantastisch aus! Hier hätte man wirklich nichts besser machen können oder? Jedoch ist mir aufgefallen das der letzte Band nicht mehr das schöne samtene Frontformat hat wie seine beiden Geschwister. Fand ich etwas schade, warum das nicht mehr so war, weiß ich auch nicht :(

Letztendlich sollten die Leser die die anderen beiden Teile schon gelesen haben, den dritten auch aufjedenfall lesen. Das Ende mag nicht für jeden befriedigend sein, mir hat es gereicht. Die Reihe ist und bleibt trotzdem etwas besonderes, leider nur kommen die beiden letzten Bände nicht mehr an das magische Niveau des ersteren heran. Wer das verkraften kann, dem steht nun nichts mehr im Wege die Reihe in einem Rutsch durchzulesen ;P(less)

The cover is brilliant! The artwork for this series is what originally drew me to pursue getting a copy of Burn Bright. It represents a dark tale with a very strong, young female lead character. The conclusion to the 'Night Creatures' trilogy is engaging and deeply satisfying, returning to Ixion Naif draws together all the necessary threads for revolution and freedom from Ixion's hold, and I know I can't be the only one sad to see the end of the sexy and sinister darkness-driven party island. Hmm this has been an interesting series. Very weird, I had a hard time really latching on to any of the main characters, there were some secondary ones I liked. Very unique concept though. Also Lenoir seriously creeped me out!

Amazing writing , naif comes into her own .This book the last in the series still has elements of suprise , twists and turns. Loves the ride highly reccomend this book such a satifying read .

It was an interesting ending to the Night Creatures Trilogy, and I think it was a bit rushed in places; but then again I am a fast reader...
The way it ended with Lenoir questions whether there will be another book about what happens to Ixion and the Ripers.
Over all I loved this book like I loved the others.
