Review of Spooky Nook by Robert Swartwood
5 stars
“Spooky Nook” is a shorter prequel to Mr. Smartwood’s novel “The Calling.” This was the first I had read by this author, and I immediately went to “The Calling” as soon as I finished this. Despite the shorter framework used here, the author manages to present a fully-fleshed out drama, good characterizations, very unexpected plot twists (I’m thinking of a snake with diagonal stripes rolling over and over in place—now you see the stripe, now you don...more

This was a short prequel (of sorts) to The Calling. It's a stand-alone story and you don't need to read The Calling first to enjoy it, but I did and I enjoyed the way Swartwood intertwined the two stories without making them rely upon each other.
I cannot write a detailed review without giving away key points...especially since it is so short. If you enjoyed The Calling, you will enjoy this. If you haven't read The Calling, read this for a taste of what it is like.

I approached this book ahead of reading Mr Swartwood's The Calling, as it stated it was a loose sequel to that novel. I'm so glad I did. The story is short but sufficiently developed enough to draw you in, make you care about the characters and want to know what happens next. I've actually read some full length novels that had less going on than this novelette.
I've previously read Mr Swartwoods Man on The Bench. He's proving himself to be a master of short fiction. I'm really looking forward to...more

I read this book after reading Man of Wax. Because it was by the same author, whom I enjoyed in the aforementioned book, I assumed it was going to be just as good. I was however, wrong. This had choppy sentences and flow problems. The idea seemed ok but it just didn't come to fruition. I also hadn't noticed that it was only 66 pages. In retrospect I'm glad it was short or I may not have finished it.
