He moved. It was a flash in the moonlight, a blur of motion like I'd never witnessed before. No human had the capacity to move like that. When I found myself face-to-face with him there in the meadow, I knew without a doubt that the journal was authentic. I knew that my grandfather hadn't been crazy at all.

Because a foot away from me stood a vampire.

What do you do when yo...more

This is a super short story. It was just okay for me. I really wanted to like it as the setting is Brown County, Indiana. I have spent a lot of time in Brown County and I love it there. I have lots of childhood memories there with my dad. I think I would have liked it more had it been longer. It was too short to really get going. I believe that there are going to be more in the series. My recommendations to the author would be to make future stories longer, make the lead character just a little...more

23 year old Sarah Brightman has been running the family B&B alone since her father died of cancer three months prior. Just as Sarah is starting to get used to her heavy load of responsibility she is told that her mother – who she thought had died 14 years ago – is alive. And that her father had left her a journal with details that she needed to know. Five minutes after this bombshell is dropped on Sarah, she finds a wounded young man on her property.

Merged review:

I love vampire-themed books. I have read many, many vampire books over the last few years. But I've never read any quite like The Vampire's Warden. Sarah, the main character, is a Warden, charged with guarding vampires who have broken the laws of the council. The Vampire's Warden has an intriguing opening, involving the mystery of Sarah's mother's supposed death. Is she not dead? Where is she? Why did she leave?
Sarah was a nice character to read. She felt like...more

I found this e-book as a freebie on Amazon.

Very good short read. The storyline and character development is quick, and interesting. It is obviously a build up for the next book. That usually bothers me, because these type of books are weighed down in dry droll detail, and I dislike the premise of "my freebie is so good, you will want to pay eight dollars for the next book". This freebie is good, and the next book is only a couple of bucks. i am going to buy it.

Sarah - her father recently dies, a...more

Full Disclaimer: Smashwords edition. Possibly translated from another language by the blog page. So spelling and grammar errors abound.

Amusing.

The author knows how to start a story, I can give her that much. It's a spoiler to say how, but the main character has a moment of shock, then goes straight for anger and denial, clinging with her fingernails as long as she can until the truth comes out.

Her dad, who died of cancer (earlier than necessary because he refused chemo!) was the warden of a mys...more

This is another book I got as a free read. And I really enjoyed it. Micheal is the vampire in question. He is a lil mysterious. You don't know if you can trust him or not. Weather he is good or bad. I finished this book leaning one way but still not quite 100% sure. Sarah handles things well considering what she has been thrown into in such a short time.

It was a fast quick read. But it was a good quick read it was too short. When I finished the book the words that flew out of my mouth were "ARE...more

After Sarah's father died, her life was not the same. Not only because she had to deal with her emotions as her dad was dead and she was a strong person, but that her mother too was not with her not with her sister, because she left them; but also because there are more things to do in the Inn than keep things tidy. She's a vampire warden and most decide to believe if vampires exist; and then when she accepts they are she doesn't know whom to trust. As even Nelly knew everything about her mother...more

I wasn't sure where this book was going at the start. I felt a little lost, much as Sarah was confused. Being written in the first person, that did make me feel a bit of a connection with Sarah, but overall I felt a bit too detached from the story.

It felt as if the attempts to make the story mysterious were simply to keep everything every vague so that the reader wouldn't be able to figure out where it was going. I was interested in Sarah, Alex and Michael, but at the end I didn't really feel I...more

I really thought the premise of this book was unique. Humans being set to be caretakers of bad vampires, the wardens of vamps who misbehave- love it!

Overall, this book was enjoyable and left me salivating for more. I will definitely be checking out the next installment. I really liked Sarah. She was a tough, no-nonsense woman. She was always honest, never beat around the bush, and took no crap from anyone. I really enjoyed that about her. Unlike, her over-emotional sister, who I think went a li...more

My thoughts:
This was a fast read. It is mysterious and intriguing. I really enjoyed the characters!

Michael is so interesting! What is really going on? Who is/was Michael and what is he to be to Sarah? Alex is great! What is his story for real? How does he know Michael? Where does this budding friendship between he and Sarah go? Speaking of Sarah... she is a fantastic character. Tough and determined. I can't wait to find out what she does with her new job as The Vampire's Warden. I get the impre...more

The Vampire’s Warden is the first novel in the ‘Undead in Brown County’ series by S.J Wright. This book was a delectable and great read.

Sarah Brightman is an independent and strong willed young woman. Her mother left her and her sister when she was little and now their father has died. The family business, a bed and breakfast, has been passed over to Sarah whilst her sister, Katie, continues her studies at a college far from home.

After their father’s death, Sarah finds out a lot more than she t...more

Sorry - I had to come back and update my review the more I thought about it:

Ok start to the series, like the characters for the most part, really only liked 2 characters and that was Alex and Nel, didn't like Sarah she was to self absorbed, Katie was too hard on her sister, Michael throught he was all of that and a slice of bread before you even had a reason to think he was, and I could go on and on about the rest of them. Although I will say that its all in the introduction phase of the series...more

The Vampire's Warden" is an incredibly different take on the vampire myth. Vampires still need to be invited in and they still only come out at night. However, a family originating from Pawnee roots have the ability to contain vampires on their property from generation to generation.

Three months after the death of her father, Sarah a 23 year old woman discovers that the mother she believed to be dead for fourteen years is alive. He is livid, disappointed, betrayed and devastated. She is given a...more

Wow. Picked this up as a freebie for Kindle and I thoroughly enjoyed it! It's a short story about Sarah being introduced to her familial responsibilities following her fathers death. We meet Alex who is sent to help her. There are some sparks. We also meet the very mysterious Michael and oh boy, he's a very compelling character that Sarah seems to be drawn to. We do have a triangle in the making but I don't find it annoying. Nobody is professing their love, thank god, since they all recently met...more

31,880 words...not sure that meets the criteria for a novella, for me, it was an hour and a half.

SJ Wright is a new author and I want to try and sample as many new voices as possible especially if they are a buck on Amazon for Kindle. With this said, the story has promise. We have a young woman, Sarah, who discovers that her family's farm has a meadow that has been cursed or blessed to be a place for vampires to rest for long periods of time. You know, go to ground like in Anne Rice books. Gener...more

Alright, I've finished. I am feeling conflicted. So many questions not answered. What's the real truth about Sarah's mother? She showed up, so maybe we'll learn what really happened. I am not inclined to like her. I think she's a bitch. The lead up to the end felt a little rush. Was what happened to Alex really necessary? And this probably shouldn't bother me, but where the hell did the pet cat come from? This whole book took at least a couple of weeks in their time and this cat was never mentio...more

Sarah is slowly coming to terms that there is such a thing as vampires, especially since there's one taking up residence in her meadow. Shortly after Sarah's father passes away, Dr. Fleming gives Sarah a journal that reveals family secrets she didn't think were even possible. Forced to take action, Sarah steps up and takes on the role as warden with the much needed help from Alex, who claims he knows her mother who abandoned both her and her sister at such a young age.

Review written by Morgan Wylie

“The Vampire’s Warden” is the first in an expanding series of novellas. Our heroine in this series, Sarah, runs her family inn on the outskirts of town in Brown County, Indiana after her father’s recent death. Unbeknownst to her, she has inherited more than just the inn.

This story is a refreshing take on vampires and one I’ve not yet read about. The idea of a human warden that keeps charge over resting or imprisoned vampires is new to me, but I loved it! Sarah is a...more

I was surprised just how fast of a read this book was, I devoured this book in just a couple hours. Sarah finds out her life wasn't what it seemed, when her dad leaves her the family inn to run when he passed away but finds out the family secret as well.

Can you imagine finding out that supernaturals do exist? Not sure how I would feel, probably the same way as Sarah did. I thought my favorite was Alex but I think I'm a Michael fan. Thanks S.J. for the twists and turns in this book.

So, I recieved this book for free on my kindle and I just read through it. It was a really short read, I believe it was 20,000 words. So, it wasn't really a novel as it was a novella. I would read the rest of the series, if it was at a decent price, but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy it. It wasn't that it wasn't interesting or fresh or unique. I just couldn't get into the perspective of the main character, which distanced me from the reading more so than what the author wanted I would imagin...more

2.5 stars?

Interesting enough start to a series, although it is both super short and felt like it may have been the first book of the author (was it?)--short on cohesion.

Basically Sarah is the last in her line to hold a magical protection field for vampires out in her meadow. Sarah runs an Inn that she took over for her dad when he passed away 6 months ago. She doesn't have any idea about vampires, or her legacy and doesn't believe in it even after she is given a family journal with details. She...more

Sarah Brightman has been in charge of running her family’s Inn since her father’s death. With the handyman, “Crazy Joe”, and the motherly Nelly, things seem to be running smoothly. There is an undercurrent of resentment that Sarah carries for her sister, Katie, who is able to attend college and pursue her dreams. But Sarah knows that duty must come first. One thing she didn’t bargain for was what all that duty includes.

Dr. Chester Fleming has brought Sarah a journal that belonged to her started...more

A short and sweet story. I read this as an e-book from the Good Reads website. I really enjoyed this story as it had a different take of vampires and the supernatural than what i usually read.

Review:
Sarah, a newly orphaned daughter (alongside her sister, who is away at college) is trying to deal with daily life at the family owned inn. Along comes a family friend who informs Sarah her life is about to change. Enter vampires and warden skills that Sarah has no idea about. She discovers that her m...more

5th book in the read-a-thon

Meh. The idea of a vampire warden is a good one, but the story just seemed to start in the middle and not really go anywhere. There were a lot of incomplete threads and it just seemed like the novel hadn't been completely fleshed out.

Sarah Brightman discovers that a field on her family's farm is a vampire resting place. Vampires wishing to go into the "long sleep" come there to be safe. The other side of this is that they can't leave without the permission of the warde...more

A 23-year-old Sarah "inherits" the job of warden over several vampires, one hot one in particular, Michael. From the beginning they have a connection, and I was eager to see that relationship grow. Sarah also has a blossoming relationship with stranger Alex, and ends up playing an important part in setting his role for the rest of the series, after a battle royale takes place on her land, and Alex gets severely injured. Most of the first book is Sarah figuring out her role, and trying to determi...more

The plot was not completely developed, the main character was over the top annoying and the story just stops without tying anything together.
Michael did seem intriguing but, unfortunately, he was in 2% of the book.
Also, the main character's name is I. Seriously? Not that it was completely confusing, but it was annoying and completely unneeded. Her worry would take paragraphs to completely describe which had me skimming lots ... and lots. She hadn't even read the diary left explaining what she...more

Vampire's Warden is a story that pulls you into the world of the unseen from the beginning. I was so taken with the story that I read it twice. A woman who has lost her father and inherited the Inn and land now must take on the responsibility of keeping the business together. Abandoned by a mother who left behind two little girls and a husband she finds a way to bring turmoil and chaos from afar. Surrounded by a magical prison on her land that holds one of the strongest vampires alive or should...more

‘The Vampire’s Warden’ is a nice little novella. It is a fast and easy read, and I quite enjoyed it. I love vampire stories, and though this seemed only peek into the story, I thought it was a somewhat different story than all the rest. It appears, there could be a love triangle (Maybe, I could have inferred wrong) and a vampire jail. That is the interesting concept, a place that vampire’s are sent if they act against the “law”/council. I thought it read well, the writing was enjoyable and the c...more

This was a really good story! Sarah, who has no idea that vampires even exist, has the job of Vampire Warden fall into her lap after her father dies from cancer. Ok, so you would think that since this job falls to the next person in line in the family, the fact that vampire exist wouldn't have been kept from Sarah. Not only does Sarah have to deal with this whole new world she's been pushed into, she also has to deal with the recent death of her father, the fact that her mother isn't really dead...more

Born in Indianapolis several decades ago, S.J. Wright grew up in the corn belt. It was terribly exciting. She is the sixth of seven daughters, crazy about horses and dogs, has two sons who are twelve years apart in age, is a reading freak and currently lives in Little Elm, Texas with her two sons, husband, and her constant shadow, Shelby.
