This was a disappointment. The villain is just bad, without a rounded character. The heroine has made stupid decisions in the past and is continuing to do so. She has too little self-knowledge for a woman of 32. I love the hero but not enough is shown or told about his background. There are no surprises in the plot, not enough joy in the HEA, and overall, this book reads as if Linda Howard was writing on auto-pilot. I hope she gets her passion back for her next offering. This book is readable, b...more
I have read every book and novella Linda Howard's written, all 53 of them. I started reading her as a romance author, and stuck with her into the romantic suspense territory, even though I prefer books more centered on human relationships and emotions than action and mysteries. Even with bad guys present, she could describe a bit about his background to make him if not someone I'd like to be around, at least someone I can relate to on some level. But a couple of chapters into this book, the view...more
3.75 stars, rounded up recently, because it's better the second time through.
Horrifyingly gruesome at times, this is an absorbing, suspenseful, and detailed survival story with strong themes of tenacity, trust, and passionate unyielding commitment. Dare and Angie get my vote for most likely to succeed at ... anything and everything!

(Oct) 2.5* It truly pains me to write a less than great review for Linda Howard - even as she's gone down hill the last 10 years or so she's still been readable - until now. This book was pretty bad - it was boring, it was not something I'd consider a romance - and a portion of the book took place from a killer bear's point of view. It was pretty awful, but it is LH and I just can't make my fingers type a 2* (or less) on a review for one of her books (well, I can for one of her earliest ones, bu...more

Ages 18 and Up
Prey by Linda Howard caught my attention right away. Besides being one of my favorite authors, for the first time she’s given thought and personality to an animal, which happens to be a man-eating bear.
Throw in Linda Howard’s usual alpha male, strong woman character, and the fact they are both wilderness guides, albeit competitors, and you’ve got an interesting recipe stewing.
Oh, did I forget to mention the insane accountant who decides he needs to off his boss?

She almost lost me with the portion of the book that was from the POV of a bear. Yes kiddo's a freakin bear! But, thankfully she kept it very minimal with only the senses triggered. And, I must admit, I did like to know what the bear was sensing and how it was reacting. But i don't read those cat mystery things precisely for the same reason....animals are not human and shouldn't be featured as one.

I hardly ever read contemporary romance. For one thing, one or more main characters in contemporaries is given to strong bouts of obscenity. I don't really care about strong language, but it gets old after about fifty repetitions. In this case it's supposed to be a flaw of the hero's and he's scolded for it, but I still got tired of f* this and s* that.

This book is not one you should read before going to bed! I had forgotten how Linda Howard is actually quite accomplished at writing suspense and weaving in romance.
Not everyone will like this book. It's rather predictable in some ways, with the heroin going off into the woods with known bad guys and a good guy being poised to rescue her. If you don't like romance, though, you probably won't like most of the books I admit to reading. :) I found the shifting points of view less than stellar, but...more

I was rather surprised by the overly harsh reviews I've read on Prey. I'll admit to being a diehard Linda Howard fan so I ignored the reviews and bought the book anyway. After all, as an author, I get bad reviews too, and I like to think that readers are discerning enough to wade through bad reviews if a book's blurb sounds like their kind of book.

Your basic wilderness survival story, complete with thunderstorms, a sociopath, and a man-eating bear.
We begin with Angie, who had made a living taking tour groups (mostly hunters) into the Montana wilderness until Dare Callahan came to town and siphoned off her business. She's putting her home up for sale to try again somewhere else when she takes one last duo of hunters into the wilderness. She should have quit sooner. Dare will, of course, come to her rescue.

I love Linda Howard and Prey is as good as all the other books she has written! She is one of those authors that I love to re-visit her work and Prey is no exception, I can see me re-reading it again in the future.
Angie is a woman facing a hard decision: sell her home and move somewhere else that she can start her guide business up agian, or stay where she is and face bankruptcy when Dare manages to put her completely out of business...Angie's smart and knows it's best to stay ahead of the bank...more

I can't see me ever giving up reading Linda Howard books. I've loved way too many to not give each new book a try. And though many readers seem disappointed with her books over the past few years, I've enjoyed them enough to keep going. Having said that, I was a bit disappointed with Prey. Just a bit mind you and I have no problems saying if you continue to be a Howard fan, I don't think this one will change that.

Other than the odd pages we spent in the POV of the bear and 5 or so pages in the head of an NPC who immediately got eaten by said bear, I really enjoyed this book.
It was more an action survival book than anything else. The heroine had guts and then some. She had moral fiber to know when to sell out her property and business and she was super tough crawling down a mountain in a storm with a broken ankle to get away from a murderer and a maneating bear.

I am not a camper/hunter/outdoors man at all and I have to say that after reading this book that will never, ever change. I realize that animals in general rarely act like the bear in this book, but still, it was too much for me.
I was surprised by how much of a character the bear became. It was so bad, that it out villained most normal villains.
I was also surprised that Dare managed to win me over. I thought like Angie at the start of the book, that he was an ass and that he stole her business...more

Great story, amazing characters, you can never go wrong with Linda Howard. To my memory, she does not disappoint.
I really do enjoy her character development and the details she describes, which gives you a sense that these characters are real people that think things through and use common sense. I get the feeling that there is a writing process that she must go through where she somehow goes through each and every step of a particular task, weighing pros and cons the way a character would, and...more

I'm just continually bummed by Linda Howard these days. In the past she's been so brilliant, but things are hit and miss these days (as I have said many times recently). This book had a FABULOUS concept and the execution wasn't bad. She worked it out so that the scenario seemed plausible, and that was good. She also had characters that were just unique enough to make the story work. (Outdoorsy girl, abandoned by mother, raised by father, bad first wedding, not a quitter. Military man with shrapn...more
I liked this book. It reminded me a lot of Dream Man because due to circumstances beyond their control the heroine - Angie - and the hero - Dare - are stuck with each other and have to live together for several days. In this case they are in a cabin in the mountains. They are forced to get to know each other and come to terms with the attraction/animosoty that has flared between them whenever they have seen each other.

I'm a huge Howard fan so this is going to kill me to write because this book was not all that entertaining to me. I actually found it kind of boring. I really love her other novels especially the spy type ones.
I thought it started out really promising. I loved how the stare down in the street happened between Angie and Dare and how they were completely different from each other.

Prey is the latest from Linda Howard. Being one of my favorite authors, I couldn't wait to listen to this one. While I liked it, I didn't love it. As far as the romance goes, Angie and Dare are great characters and I loved their relationship. I enjoyed watching Angie realize that she does love Dare. For once it is the woman who is unsure and not the man. The banter between the two was enjoyable. One thing that was missing for me was more back story on Dare. The reader doesn't really get to know...more

Page 5.....I found out it's a story about a woman named Angie who leads hunting trips through the Montana wilderness, and I'm not at all interested! Hunting? Guns? Not my thing!
Page 28.....The story is now being told from the viewpoint of a black bear! Really?? This seems ridiculous! I can't possibly read this! I might have to tell the book club girls to forget about reading this bad choice.

Wasn't sure how to like this Linda Howard book, because some of hers are too supernatural-fantasy for me, and she seems to have trouble picking a genre.
This one was a better match for me than her Black Ops or CIA-killer series or her modern-day vampire series...I'm not even sure there's a difference in any of those aforementioned series.
This one stands alone, no series, and is pretty heavy in detail in terms of gore from black bear attacks, surviving in the mountains (in a rainstorm, with a kill...more

I'm not sure what to say...I didn't hate it, so that's good. But I do have to side with the majority on this one, it's certainly not up to my Linda Howard standards. There was no spark, no chemistry between Dare and Angie. And nearly non-existent sex. And the stuff with the bear? That was just bizarre. All in all, I feel like I completed my chore for the week. It was hard work to get it finished, but I'm glad it's finally over.

I would probably give this more like 3.5 than 3, but not quite to the level of a 4. I don't know if i've ever read a strict RomSus from Linda Howard, I'd read some of her traditional romances though. I was surprised how much I ended up enjoying this book. I could tell that she had def. done research into the way certain things happened in the book (view spoiler), but it wasn't so much that it over-powered the story/ caused a data-dump for the rea...more

Certainly this is not her best work, but is slightly better than average RS novel and definitely above a Harlequin RS. I would probably rate this 1.5 stars given my Linda-Howard expectations; a 3-star is because it's still slightly above average.
