This play is so good that it is not merely a masterpiece but a mystery. The two protagonists are alternately noble and petty, wise and foolish, and yet never seem inconsistent or self-contradictory because Shakespeare--here is the mystery--consistently maintains a tone both ironic and heroic.
The sexiest of Shakespeare's tragedies. He toys with the ideas of sex and gender roles and leadership and battle. War becomes a metaphor for sex and vice versa. Cleopatra is a powerful female character that, at times, is more of a man than Anthony. We see Cleopatra protecting Anthony.
