I liked the sparse writing. I am not sure if that was intentional but when you are dealing with such intense subject matter (the evil Nazi machine) it certainly makes it more bearable. Hannelore meets her future husband,Dick, in the concentration camp. Their vow to each other to survive compels both of them to move forward through horrific circumstances. This book is a testament to the power of love. The lilac tree was a symbol of love for Hannelore's parents and Dick promises to plant a lil...more

An amazing story of survival, which is told in a frank and open style without dwelling on the overwhelming hardships and despair. Love, hope and faith struggle against a background of prisoner hardship, illness and death. Ultimately, freedom comes for Laura and some of those on Schindler's list. This is a quick read that will leave you thinking for a long time.

A friend and I met Laura Hillman at the Festival of Books a couple years ago. She speaks at high schools and shares her experience to educate our youth. It took her many years to decide to finally write her story. I read this with pain in my heart for so many that suffered at the hands of cruelty. Her survival is a miracle and this book is worth reading!

It is so amazing what people lived thru in those concentration camps! I can't even imagine. I wish the story continued after they were liberated - I really wonder how they restarted their lives with nothing and in what was probably a hostile environment still.

This is a wonderful book about a Schindler's list survivor. I loved this book because the author had a way of letting the reader know about the awful things she went through without being graphic. This book is also very romantic. I love this book.

This was a very good book, I devoured it in under 24 hours. Of course it is sad and heartbreaking, but also filled with hope and love. If you want to read about the Holocaust from a female's perspective you should definitely read this book!

This was a very beautiful book about a Schindler's List survivor. She didn't gloss over the horrible things she went through, yet she didn't go into such detail that you wanted to throw up. Plus it was on the romantic side. Love it.

Another sad story of the Holocaust. I find it amazing that while some people have chosen to share their experiences, others (like the author's husband) refuse to even talk about that time in their lives.

Good book for 8th - 10th grade students especially to help them get a sense of what it was like to exist in the concentration camps. Quick read that tugs at your emotions.
