This is Stefan's big break. He's on location in the mountains far from home for his first movie role, filming a blockbuster sci-fi adventure. The props, the spaceships, and the trained wolves on set should add up to a dream job, but acting turns out to be much tougher than he ever imagined, and he feels like his inner loser is all that's showing through. From the way his f...more

My book I have read is called Wolf Storm by Dee Garretson. This story takes place in a place called frozen land of Slovakia. They are filming a science fiction movie in which these kids come back to a frozen wasteland version of earth with only the protection of there pet wolfs. The characters in this book are Stefan who is 14,Rain which is 13,and Jeremy which is 9, and they are all siblings in the movie. Stefan is the main character in this story and he takes his friends to audition for a movie...more

I chose this book because the plot and title seemed very appealing which interested me to read it. This book is basically about 3 characters (14-year-old Stefan, 13-year-old Raine, and 9-year-old Jeremy)who play in a movie in the frozen islands of Slovakia. The movie is supposed to be a science fiction movie in which these kids come back to a frozen wasteland version of Earth with only the protection of their pet wolves. But, when a real snowstorm hits the cast, their they use only their surroun...more

14-year-old Stefan, 13-year-old Raine, and 9-year-old Jeremy play siblings in a movie they are filming in the frozen lands of Slovakia. The movie is supposed to be a science fiction movie in which these kids come back to a frozen wasteland version of Earth with only the protection of their pet wolves. But when a very real snowstorm and avalanche leave the three kids and their wolves trapped outdoors, they turn from actors playing a t survival to real life survivors. With the smart use of props a...more

Review: I adore Dee Garettson, and will definitely seek out other novels of hers to read and share with my daughter. “Wolf Storm” is a perfect adventure for children age 8-12 years. Even as an adult I found myself completely enthralled and unable to put this book down.

The story is about three children hired to act in a movie that takes place in the...more

This was a quick and easy read that packed a punch. Centered on Stephan, a young actor taking on his first role, the story hits on a number of elements including relationships, a survival story, and him being a fish out of water and it does it all well.

The author does a nice job of weaving the story together, spending just enough time on Stephan's experiences on set, dealing with rude co-stars and the pressure of getting things right for the camera or risk losing the job. The author hints that...more

One day, as I walked into English class, I realized that I didn’t have a book. Therefore, I looked through the titles of the books in my teacher’s library, and this one appealed to me the most. This book is about three kids and one old grandpa, who during their first night in the Carpathian Mountains, where they were shooting a movie, get separated from their fellow actors, directors, and parents. The kids are surrounded by hungry wolves, and they must find a way to outsmart them, and survive th...more

This book is so exciting! I felt as if I was in the story or watching it all unfold before me eyes. For a middle grade novel it is very well written. It grasps you and has you wanting to hurry and find out if they make it out alive, become wolf chow or human-sicles (popsicles).

Wolf Storm had me on the edge of my seat and holding my breath until I got to the end of the chapter. Where there I'm taken back to the top of the roller coaster. What a ride! =)

Stefan, well in the beginning of his teenage...more

Wolf Storm by Dee Garretson

My Summary:

Stefan went with a friend to an audition for a movie and landed a leading role in a blockbuster sci-fi film. Joined by a famous stuck-up co-star, he struggles to get through the first day. Everything he does is wrong. When the production day finally ends, most everyone leaves for town. The three child actors and one adult actor are left in an old ski lodge as a huge winter storm hits the mountain. When the power goes out, they build a fire and try to enjoy t...more

My son thinks that he just likes books about wizards and magic and monsters but I think I have found one that might change his mind. Wolf Storm by Dee Garretson was a really great adventure tale. I think this is just the kind of book to get him interested in reading more contemporary stories. The main character, Stefan is the perfect lead for the story. He is written as such a likeable boy that your teen can imagine being or being friends with. That is what makes it so wonderful to follow along...more

I'm not particularly fond of scary stories, especially not the horror genre, but I do love survival stories. I'm not sure why, because I also love my creature comforts, but for whatever reason, I do love survival stories. This particular survival story I enjoyed, especially because it's very different than others I've read.

First, the location, Slovakia is not one I've ever seen in a middle grade/young adult book, or in any book come to think of it. Garretson does a fabulous job of creating the s...more

Strong survival story in snowy mountains in Slovakia where a group of actors are filming a sci-fi movie. Cue the wolves, the avalanche and old actor who is hurt leaving a trio of young actors to try and survive. I like the larger print and the pacing.
I gave it three stars only because I couldn't buy all the adults leaving the ski chalet and going into town in a huge blizzard leaving the kids alone and the ending scene was too forced, staged, and unsatisfying.
I think upper elementary and middle...more

Stefan thought his great adventure would come on the movie set, although he reluctantly went to the casting call with his friend. Little did he know that Cecil's curse would make him and his co-stars live through a heroic and tragic adventure. The storm was not expected tell the next day, so all the adults and producers went to town for the last time before the storm closed them in to the abandoned Chalet in the Carpathan mountains. Stefan, and his co-stars, Jeremy, and Raine, had thought they wou...more

On a whim, Stefan auditioned for a role in an upcoming blockbuster film. He was cast as one of the leads and is now on the set in the mountains of Slovakia. The sci-fi adventure calls for dramatic props and trained wolves, so it should be a lot of fun. However, difficult co-stars and a dangerous winter storm combined with hungry feral wolves force Stefan to fight for his very survival.
Great adventure story with lots of action. Could be a good choice for reluctant readers or those interested in t...more

Stefan is about to make his first ever feature movie and become a big star-if he doesn't mess it all up with his clumsiness. He keeps forgetting his lines; he makes his costar Raine furious; and, he accidentally almost kills one of the trained wolves, stopping the whole production. When most of the adults leave to try and find help for the injured wolf, Stefan is left alone with his two teenage costars overnight.

The story quickly goes from a drama/comedy of misadventure to thriller to horror to...more

Stephan thinks acting might be fun, goes on a audition, and ends up the star of a potential blockbuster sci-fi adventure film. It ends up being more difficult than he expected. And then things get more interesting than the script. A blizzard strikes stranding the kid actors on location in the Carpathian Mountains while most of the adults are away in town. Wild wolves looking for food are stalking them and the trained wolves for the movie. Yes, it must be said, that's when the action really start...more

Wolf Storm was everything I expected it to be and better. I wasn't really sure how much I would like it when I first borrowed it from the library but, I did know for a fact that it would be a book that I liked.

I've always enjoyed a good survivalist novel especially when they're YA or upper middle grade novels and of course the occasional middle grade novel as well. This one though really did impress me though. I was very surprised by how well thought out the story line was.

Wolf Storm is the kind of book to keep you up at night. The characters are real and interesting, and the situation they are in of filming a futuristic sci-fi movie in a deserted, snowbound area of Slovakia, sets the scene for creepiness. Enter catastrophe, coupled with the danger of feral wolves, and my palms were sweating as I turned each page. This tale is packed with action of the kind young readers would eagerly gobble up. The author has done an amazing job of filling every page with tension...more

Great book for Middle Grade students; both boys and girls. Very creative plot. All the right kinds of action. Interesting characters - real life characters to connect with.

I read this book during a day of air travel. It kept me turning the pages from start to finish. My hubby, who is NOT a reader, was reading this book over my shoulder. The avalanche sure did catchc his attention! :)

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to read this before its release. Wonderful! The characters are well-developed and intriguing. It's fast-paced and suspenseful, but it's still got that literary edge. My 11-year-old son loved it. Even better than Wildfire Run, which is hard to beat.

Wolf storm is about a guy named Stefan who is filming a block buster movie in the mountains about future earth. When all the adults leave to go to the village, Stefan and the other kids are left on the set. It should have been a nice mini vacation but when a blizzard followed by an avalanche hits the set it's up to Stefan and his friends to get out of there and find a way to the village before they freeze to death or get eaten by the wild wolves.
I picked this book up because it looked interestin...more

A great page-turning adventure. Perfect for reading with a cup of cocoa when the weather outside is awful! You won't need an entire chair to sit and read this, because you will definitely be on the edge of your seat.

This would be a good book for middle school readers who are looking for a scary, real world survival tale, but nothing too gory or TOO scary. To me, this was a bit of fluff, but to an 11 year old I think it would have just the right amounts of danger and suspense.
Cheri
Interesting action book about child actors who get caught in a storm while working on a movie. Topics include: acting, animal training, friendship, winter survival.

The writing isn't great but it's a fun movie set / wilderness / avalanche / wild wolves adventure anyway. Thick book but giant font means its an easier read than it appears.
