The Measure of Katie Calloway by Serena Miller was a fantastic read! The story was deep and the strength of the characters was rich.
Katie is ready to take her and her brother’s life into her own hands when she is convinced her husband is trying to kill her. The flight to safety (hopefully) has landed them in a logging camp with Katie as a cook. I loved the realistic portrayal of Katie and her struggles! She was strong, week, unsure and steadfast. The camp boss, Robert, was equally real and you s...more

What would make you run away from home?

For Katie Calloway it was an abusive husband who had decided to kill her. (Does that make your problem seem smaller?)

In the first chapter of this story, Katie decides that her days as a victim are over. She gathers her few belongings and heads north with her young brother Ned. Fortunately, she finds work and a great place to hide as the cook for a north woods lumber camp. And, of course, just the right honest, upright man comes along to protect her and pro...more

Sometimes there are books that I just know I will love before I even read them. I don’t know what it is that makes me feel that way, but I can just tell I will enjoy them. That is the way I felt about The Measure of Katie Calloway. I think my excitement about this book was not so much about the actual story, although it did sound like it would be good. My excitement was more from reading an author that I have not read before. When it comes to an author I have read before, there is a certain expe...more

The Civil War was hard on many people, but even harder on a young woman from the north married into a Georgian family. It didn't take long to realize that the handsome young man from West Point, who was her brother's friend, had a mean streak. More than a mean streak he was downright cruel and enjoyed mistreating her, before the war, and after the war it was worse. He was positive that every trouble he had in life was that Yankee woman's fault, and he would make her pay!

Miller’s story about an antebellum abused wife fleeing north to Michigan timber country and winds up as a cook in a rough and tumble lumber camp is a satisfying step back in time.

Katie Calloway, young and naïve Pennsylvania minister’s daughter, marries her brother’s West Point friend and moves south to become mistress of a slave-run plantation. Not only does she enter the strange and confusing world of ownership of other humans, the War Between the States becomes a reality and she is left alone...more

Many English teachers, at least back in the day, would give students two grades on writing assignments--one for what they had to say (content) and another for how they said it (grammar). Well, content-wise, I'd give Serena Miller a pretty good grade on this story. It was an engaging read with likable characters. The historical details were interesting. There were parts that were downright funny--like when Robert bought two pigs for the camp and Katie asked what they should name them. One guy sug...more

Serena Miller won me over easily with this book and I cannot wait to read more from this author. I found the historical part of this story completely fascinating and was able to go back in time and get a glimpse of what life was like for loggers, woodsmen and owners of lumber camps in the 1800’s. Serena’s book was able to interest me in a subject that otherwise, I might not consider reading about.

Serena’s writing was so vivid, detailed and interesting that even a rough, male-dominated subject li...more

This book falls into the general genre of romance. However, it is so much richer than what I think of when I think of "romance." The plot is much more complex and the characters are multifaceted.
Katie Calloway is a young woman who has survived the difficulties of the Civil War, including Sherman coming through her area and burning her husband's family home. Her husband, Harlan, comes home from the war and treats everyone poorly. He beats Katie because she didn't save the home place and for any...more

From the very first page I was hooked. And it just kept getting better and better as I read on. I couldn't ask for more, this book had me utterly charmed. And I will most certainly be reading more books from Ms. Miller as soon as I possibly can!

First posted on my blog Legacy of a Writer.

I am ready to admit that the first thing that drew me to this book was the title. (It’s just kinda neat reading a book where the main character has your name. ;-) After spying my name on the book cover and checking out the back cover, I had a very strong feeling that I was going to enjoy this book. And I did—fully and completely! One of the things I think that this historical appealed to me so much was the unique setting—a logging camp in Michigan right...more

I was pleasantly surprised and delighted by the depth of this story. Not only did I learn a lot about the logging business post Civil-war, but more about Michigan as well. I loved the anecdotal sayings and songs about the shanty boys and the dangers inherent in that business. It was amazing what our ancestors went through in both logging and mining, which are both fascinating subjects to me.

The plot was well developed and the characters were complex. I loved that the author didn't have a predic...more

When Katie realizes her abusive husband intends to kill her, she grabs her little brother and runs. She ends up cooking in a Michigan lumber camp.

My grandfather worked in a lumber camp. The history, lingo, and details of the industry helped me imagine what his life must have been like. I also enjoyed the sense of community that formed in the camp - each of the characters a distinct individual. The use of suspense kept the story moving. I applauded Katie's character arc - at the end, she's a str...more

Utterly captivating! Miller has gone to great effort to get her historical facts right and it certainly shows in this sweeping saga. I loved the unique setting and the author used it to the best advantage in this gripping plot. Miller's vivid details made each scene jump off the page and it was very easy to lose myself in the wealth of this story. In fact, I was very reluctant to give it up when I reached the conclusion.

Stunning passages, endearing characters and a stellar plot will engage any...more

I never knew spending time with a ornery old cook, a group of dirty loggers, and a frightened Indian who could barely speak would make for one of the best historical books I've read all year! Serena Miller successfully transported me to the cold forests of Michigan with this charming tale, and I absolutely hated to leave. While I enjoyed the ebb and flow of camp life, as well as the subtle romance that steadily built between Katie and Robert, what I really loved to read about was the food. Oh, t...more

The Measure of Katie Calloway by Serena Miller takes place shortly after the end of the Civil War. Katie flees with her brother to the north woods of Michigan to escape an abusive husband. She hires on as a cook for a lumber camp.

The book portrays the hardships and danger involved in logging operations. She also shows how hard it was for a woman on her own to make it in the post Civil War days.

With the support of the owner of the camp and the loyalty of the loggers, she learns to stand up for...more

Great book and deserves the RITA win! I was totally enthralled with Katie and the hardships she was enduring.

When I read, I want to be immersed in the story, the characters and the time period. Miller totally nails it in this wonderful book! The first paragraphs grabbed me and would not let go. I finished this book within a day. I could nitpick certain details, but why bother? The story flows, you feel empathy to the characters, the time period lives. Thank you, Ms. Miller. I am going to seek o...more

“The Measure of Katie Calloway” is a novel that spans land and emotions, filled with colorful descriptions and finger-nibbling moments of unease.

When you have an abused character it can be a challenge to make her likeable and not weak. Katie Calloway is no weak heroine. She knew what she wanted and she went after what she needed – to protect her life and that of her brother. I have tremendous respect for her in that role.

The setting of the novel was one so well described I could smell the donut...more

Serena Miller caught my attention with her first book, Love Finds You in Sugarcreek, Ohio. She created a unique story full of wonderful and interesting characters. It is my great pleasure to pass on the word that her new historical romance, The Measure of Katie Calloway, is another winner!

I am in complete and utter agreement with the last couple of lines of the back cover description. Miller writes with such delightful detail, which is one of the best parts of this book. The post-Civil War Michi...more

This is my first novel by Serena Miller, and I can say with certainty that it won't be my last. Miller has written a wonderful novel that captured my attention from the very first page! She has a wonderful, descriptive writing style that immerses you into a realistic setting. You feel as if you're right there with the shanty boys as they feast over meat pies, donuts, bread pudding, and cinnamon rolls. The characters are well drawn, each with a distinct charm that makes for a great cast of charac...more

I seem to be reading a lot of books lately that are set in lumber camps in Michigan during the second half of the 1800s. I’m not sure why these novels ended up clustered together, but it has definitely given me greater knowledge and appreciation of the history of America during this time.

One thing I liked about this novel right from the beginning was that it didn’t take long to get into the story. The beginning started right off with Katie having to flee her home, and it just kept going from th...more

After passing his cooking "test" with flying colors, she and her brother are hired for the 7 month winter job in the logging camp. Camp turns out to be anything but easy, and it seems like one thing after another occurs to cause...more

'The Measure of Katie Calloway' is the first book that I've read by Serena Miller and I very much enjoyed it!

I found Katie's story very sad and heartbreaking. She was married to an abusive husband who (in the first chapter) tried to kill her. Katie, upon learning this, hurriedly left Georgia and her violent husband behind, traveling North with her brother. She ends up in Michigan where she secures a job as a lumber camp cook.

Her heart seeks sanctuary in the deep woods. But will trouble find her...more
