Enjoyable both for the recipes and the history; I felt all warm-and-fuzzy reading about all the Thanksgiving recipes and traditions that Americans have kept over the years, and the newer ones that have been added by more recent immigrants (i.e., many have found lasagna to be a staple for their Thanksgiving menu!) (Though the authors do make thoughtful nods to the Native Americans, even including a few details on their National Day of Mourning which is observed the same day as Thanksgiving.) Th

I've been reading an informative and insightful cookbook, "Giving Thanks: Thanksgiving Recipes and History, from Pilgrims to Pumpkin Pie" by Kathleen Curtin, Sandra L. Oliver, and Plimoth Plantation.
You are probably well aware that no one knows for certain what was exactly shared and consumed at that first day of thanksgiving in 1621 sometime between Sept. 21 and Nov. 9 among the native Wampanoag People of Cape Cod and the settling English. The only eye-witness account of tha More...

Having emigrated from the US, this book is as close as I'll ever get to Thanksgiving again, so it gets taken out with much nostalgia every November. Fortunately I've been able to integrate quite a few of the recipes into the family Christmas dinner, even though they stared at my cranberry orange relish with confusion. (More for me!)

I am such a dweeb. I love stuff like this. History and food all in one package! I loved reading the notes before the recipes. It is interesting to see the culinary history of a society and how it changes, and what causes those changes.

Giving Thanks explores the history of Thanksgiving, complete with trivia, recipes, and a collection of archival imagery of the holiday’s history. This book really didn't tell me anything I did ot already know and had very common recipes in it...nothing new or exciting except for one recipe I never saw which was Indian Pudding. Sinced I already have an excellent recipe for corn pudding I did not copy it off to try.

A wonderfully detailed history of the Thanksgiving holiday in the first half of the book and delicious recipes in the back. We've made the sobaheg twice and really enjoyed it.
