Another Jo Beckett novel. Jo is a forsenic psychiatrist, whose specialty is as a consultant to the local police station. She is often asked to help determine the psychological status and mind set of individuals who have died. She has been consulting on the recent death of a local lawyer, whose body was found in an abandoned mine in the Sierra Mt. range. Jo contacts a newspaper reporter, Evan who is also trying to determine how he died. Between the two of them, they find new leads. Jo decides to...more

In the California wilderness no one can hear you scream.

San Francisco Forensic Psychiatrist Jo Beckett doesn’t dissect the body or the crime scene – she dissects a life and a mind, recreating the victim as a person, piecing together the story of their death to get to the truth. And then she goes after the killer.

Autumn Reiniger wants something special for her twenty-first birthday. Daddy’s bought her the car and the apartment, but now she wants excitement. And what Autumn desires, she gets.

This book felt like a gimmick. Fans of the Evan Delaney books have been waiting YEARS to find some resolution to the cliffhanger of Kill Chain, but Meg Gardiner has moved on to Jo Beckett. Enter: The Nightmare Thief, which promised to include Evan Delaney (and Jesse Blackburn) in the fourth Jo Beckett book. Sounds promising enough, right? Both Evan and Jesse appear in the first chapter, and though things haven't changed between them, Jesse is in town (SF) arguing before the 9th circuit, so we th...more

I struggled with the first 9-ish chapters of this book, whilst Gardiner sets the scene for all the action that is about to unfold. I couldn’t really remember who was who, and thought I wasn’t ever going to really care. However, once we get into the nitty-gritty kidnapping, it turns into a fast-paced action thriller which is packed full of non-stop action that will keep you turning the pages. However, it’s much more action adventure (about survival) than thriller.

I believe this is the fourth book...more

Why this book sucked:
1. I didn't realize it was a series. So there was backstory I didn't have and it was confusing when the author was talking about people like I was supposed to know them.

2. $20 words in $2 prose. Totally out of place words in a cheap novel.

3. From the little research I did, I don't think Hummer limos usually have a luggage compartment. But this was kind of important, since a dead guy got stuffed in there.

4. [spoiler] What happened to the snakes?? She was carrying them, then...more

I'm catching up on my Meg Gardiner reading. I've read all of her books published before this one. Like all of Gardiner's books, The Nightmare Thief certainly did not disappoint.

While the book remains primarily a Jo Beckett thriller, The Nightmare Thief brings together Gardiner's two heroines -- Jo Beckett and Evan Delaney -- to collaborate on a case. While the collaboration is brief, it is memorable and hopefully a precursor for the future where they will fully collaborate on a case.

Jo's invest...more

Autumn and her friends are in for one hell of an adventure. Or so they thought; on her 21st birthday, her father books an fantasy adventure for her and her friends (hoping it will help her grow up). He had experienced one and thought it would be just what she needed. Except things go wrong and the fantasy becomes reality when the kids are kidnapped for real! The cops were notice din advance that it was a game. But forensic psychiatrist Jo Beckett stumbles across the kidnapped kids while investig...more

The Nightmare Thief is like a Hunger Games for grown-ups. This being my first novel from Meg Gardiner, I didn't know the characters, though she has three other novels for Jo Beckett, the forensic psychologist that while investigating a murder, gets caught up in an "ultimate urban" reality game. And Evan Delaney, an investigative journalist, who tries to help solve the case on the other end of the danger, has five novels of her own.

The urban reality game sets up a simulated drug deal, manhunt and...more

In some ways the plot is cleverly put together, but it is fundamentally a very dull book about characters I don't care about taking unrealistic amounts of physical punishment. The reporter character isn't as funny as the author thinks she is and the doctor and her boyfriend don't have enough depth to have chemistry. There's a wacky guy with a monkey who doesn't have much reason to be there, along with a random guy in a wheelchair at the beginning. My guess is those are tacked on fan-favorite cha...more

An interesting premise - spoiled rich girl gets a reality-adventure from her dad. He's hoping she learns something and she certainly does. I've read all of Ms. Gardiner's books and she writes well-crafted suspense but this one fell short for me. The growth of rich kid Autumn does not develop credibly, with the ending a little too pat. Jo Beckett and Evan Delaney are both in this one, which I enjoyed, but the sections focusing on them skimmed their surfaces. Nevertheless, even though this didn't...more

This starts out with your typical daddy's girl backed with a lot of money from daddy. For Autumn's 21st birthday party, her father decides that he is going to give her a scenario in which she will be able to face and defeat her childhood fears. However within a matter of hours the party scenario turns into a kidnapping into a survival situation. Autumn and her friends along with Jo and Gabe have to fight for survival on a mountain.

It was pretty interesting and fast paced though Autumn's father...more

Spoiled rich girl gets the birthday present of a lifetime. Her daddy signs her up for an urban reality game. The local police are notified so they won't interfere as the "characters" go speeding through the city and pretend they are being chased or kidnapped. Meanwhile, someone has been watching and preparing to really kidnap the rich girl. While all of this is going on a forensic psychologist is out with her boyfriend and they get dragged into the drama.
I couldn't put this book down because the...more

An interesting plot - a super wealthy businessman decides to give his spoiled daughter an unusual 21st birthday gift - she will have an adventure weekend with her friends where they get to play out a scenario to solve a crime. Trouble starts when a real kidnapping/ransom occurs and the kids quickly realize that people are really getting injured and killed. The book is a quick read and enjoyable. However, there so many characters (the kids, adventure organizers, kidnappers, innocent bystanders, p...more

This is another installment of the Jo Beckett series. Jo is a forensic psychologist and consultant to the SFPD and is called in when the cause of death cannot be determined. She examines the background of the victim to see what was going on in his/her life to see if there are any missing pieces that can help the police determine what has happened. In this novel, Jo and her boyfriend and pararescueman boyfriend, Gabe Quintana, are looking into the suspicious death of lawyer Phelps Wylie who was f...more

Fate plays a big part on this suspense thriller by intertwining two separate events that end up being parts needed to complete the final puzzle.

Jo Beckett, a forensic psychiatrist and her partner Gabe Quintana went to investigate the death of an attorney that was ruled as accidental in an abandon mine in the mountains in California. At the same time, Autumn Reiniger the daughter of a millionaire financial investor, received her 21st birthday gift. A reality adventure provided to her and a group...more

It was...okay. The story wasn't as thrilling as espoused on the cover (surprise!), the characters took too long to develop to where I might like them a bit, the secondary story with the alternate investigators took too much time away from the action and I was pretty disappointed. Maybe if I had read the Jo Beckett books before this one but given all the time we spent on Jo Beckett I kinda don't get the impression that she's developed as a character a lot in the previous ones. It also suffered fr...more

i LOVE this book. it is definatly a 'thrill a minute'. so many twists and turns. however, if you are looking for something to read that you dont have to think too hard about, you should put this one down and find something else. this is one that needs all your concentration, but it isnt a labouring book.,.. it is fast paced and highly dangerous. i even caught myself gasping at the end of very short chapters.

read but be prepared to not put down until the end.

Scary stuff! Very wealthy dad gives spoiled daughter an "ultimate urban reality" game for her 21st birthday. She & 5 friends will participate in a game where there's a simulated drug deal, manhunt & jailbreak. The police have been alerted it's a game, so when the kids are kidnapped, no one knows they're missing! Things go from bad to worse & other people become involved. Several twists & turns throughout.

LA college kids go on a 21st birthday pseudo-adventure of cops and robbers for spoiled brat Autumn Reninger. Little do they know Daddy has enemies willing to kidnap and murder to get his money.

The Nightmare Thief delivers on thrills and plot twists. It works as a stand alone novel despite being part of the Jo Beckett series. The climatic scene with Peyton could have been more plausable. Over all a great novel.

Dr. Jo Becket, investigating the equivocal death of an attorney with her lover Gabe Quintana, encounters a group of young people who have been kidnapped during a reality game gone wrong. Now they must protect the kids while tying to save themselves, too.

Fourth in the series and brings in Evan Delaney,a character in Gardiner's other series. A good, fast-paced thriller that makes a perfect beach read.

i didn't even know this was out! it read a little more . . . blah than her earlier books, but i love jo and gabe and april and THE GUEST CHARACTER that i had no idea was showing up, and literally SQUEALED.

it's a good quick read. i love these characters, so i will continue to read everything, but i want some hard hitting mystery again . . . and i want to know more about guest character and cross over character . . . oh meg gardiner, write more fast.

Jo Beckett gets into more dangerous situations than any female protagonist I can think of. This time, she and long-time boyfriend, Gabe, inadvertently stumble upon a bizarre kidnapping. The Jo Beckett series tends to have pretty intense life-threatening action scenes and in this book the author outdid herself. Kidnapping, vicious murders, flash floods in gorges, treacherous mountain terrain, greenback rattlesnakes, a cluster of injured privileged young adults and a psychopath and sociopath out to...more

This book for me had some slow spots toward the middle of the beginning, but toward the real middle of the book it got really really good and the author threw in some really good twists and turns that I could not have expected. That being said, I tore through the second half of the book in just a couple days, where the first portion took me a bit longer. I don't want to give away too much, but if you like suspense and thriller novels, you will love this book.

Another great Gardiner thriller, which manages to combine her Jo Beckett and Evan Delaney characters (resolving one of the unanswered plot threads from Kill Chain). Nice twist on a well-used kidnapping story in that the criminals hijack what appears to be a fake-kidnapping-as-adventure-party to disguise their crimes.

This is the first Meg Gardiner book I've read. Has anyone made it into a movie yet? Someone should.

I think it would have helped to have read some of the earlier books, to come into the story with a bit more familiarity with the characters and their previous relationships. Having said that, the story does work ok as a stand-alone. There was more action and less psychology than I'd expected, but maybe the 'psychological autopsy' themes are stronger in MG's other story lines?

I really like Meg Gardiner, but I've never been a big fan of books where people are out in the wilderness hiding from the bad guys. Sadly, almost this whole book took place in the forest at night. While I did finish it, I know I skimmed a lot, particularly all the details about climbing up the sides of gullys. Just not interesting for a city girl.

In "Nightmare Thief", Jo Beckett crosses paths with Evan Delany (last seen in "Kill Chain"). Jo's most recent case has her and Gabe heading out on a dangerous trek, which puts them in the middle of a faux-crime spree that turns into a real kidnapping of a birthday party.

Tense and twisting, "Nightmare Thief" keeps you on the edge until the very end.
