This slim little treatise offers some of the most practical, applicable advice on writing that I've come across yet. Kooser puts less emphasis on technical aspects of form and rhythm in favor of solid poetry that's written to be read, pointing out that the music is a less conscious process. It's friendly and encouraging - I found myself nodding in recognition of mistakes I make, proud to see things I already work on, and reaching for the highlighter often.

Despite if you love or hate Kooser's work, he has come up with a practical approach for beginning poets. I've read over twenty of these kind of "beginners" books, and he seems to capture the best of advice in this book. I recommend it, even if it serves as a sounding board for your own aesthetics.

I am currently reading and am finding that a lot of what I do to encourage student poetry writing is validated by Kooser's suggestions. I've never found a student who couldn't write a good poem given the appropriate insight and motivation.

A very down to earth approach to writing poetry. Good for poets sticking their feet into the cold currents of poetry, or veterans inundated with the heaviness of words.

I used this book to teach a community poetry workshop, and it is perfect for that purpose. Kooser has a gift for clarity.

Like it sez. Good advice for beginning and experienced poets, practical, in Kooser's everyday, conversational style.
