His Name In Lights is a hard SF novelette by Australian Writer Patty Jansen. Now don’t let the tag ‘hard SF’ scare you off, there’s no Astrophysics or hard science to turn you brains to mush. It’s hard science in the background, in the setting.

Remember when you last read a real, hard SF story, you know the type, driven by relationships, psychology and politics in a future where the science dictates the parameters and the conflict could only happen within those paremeters. I picked this up when it was offered as a free Kindle download. The current price is $2.99. I only mention that because His Name In Lights is a relatively short novella (35 pages). At that price my standards might have been a little higher.
As it is though, I really enjoyed His Name In Lights. It's a traditional, maybe even slightly old fashioned hard science fiction story with a number of familiar elements to it including space exploration and what makes a person human.

This is a wonderful story with a completely science fiction setting. It’s a story of love, of family, of a struggle against all odds, and importantly one of survival and perhaps it also demonstrates what it is that makes us human. It challenges what really defines who and what we are. It’s a story of terraforming new worlds and the challenges we might face. It’s a story of brotherly love, and family. Ya know... I am tired of sci-fi being about men, war, and politics. I think that was why I was so excited with Patty Jansen's Watcher's Web. It was all the things I want in sci-fi: space travel, new and different beings, planets, a woman who has a mind of her own.
But, I should have known, HIS Name in Lights wouldn't give me anything but what has already been written about. Please! Ok, Her Majesty was there lighting the lights, so to speak, but... more human emotion. More depth of character. Mayb...more

Real science-fiction story. This is what came into my mind reading this novella. I'm tired of novels I read lately, mixing romance, paranormal and SF. His Name In Lights is a refreshingly original sci-fi story, reminding me of Asimov's robot novels. It raises questions I'm not sure ever would be answered, like: what makes us human, our body, our soul, or both together?; what is the relation between creator and creature?

What does it mean to be human? Is it the parts that make the man, or the heart? Is it the DNA or the brain it's made from? All valid question and just a few of the ones the ones that are hinted at in this SciFi novelette by Patty Jansen. She posits that free will makes the man, and not the pieces, then pits her melded men against others who don't feel at all the same way. Novella on events that happen in Io, a Jovian moon, with robots, aggregates(between robots and humans), cool technology that is realistic and a political scenario that exemplifies the human nature. It has a tinge of Asimov on the way the events and internal thoughts are communicated. Crisp, grandiose and plausible, I would not be surprised if this is extended into a full blown novel. Great read.
Patty Jansen does science fiction the way it should be done. His Name in Lights takes us to Jupiter and Io, giving us humans, who with all their future diversity, are still human. The story pits engineered humans against Io's volcanoes and human bullies of the first order. It's reminiscent of Asimov and Clarke, and the Golden Age of SF. A very enjoyable book!
The main character Daniel is wroking on one of the moons of Jupiter. When he runs into trouble it is up to Filin to help save the day. This is an interesting read that re-defines the family relationship and what is really human. This was a very interesting read, the description of the planets and the different ships were very good.
This novelette follows two characters in the midst of large engineering projects centred about Jupiter and Io. What I particularly enjoyed is that, despite a fairly narrow primary plot focus, it read as though it was happening in a large, well-realised universe with lots of other things going on in the background.
