Ana is a descendant of Atlantis. She wants nothing to do with her mother's people, for she knows the brutality they are capable of. Their one gift to her was in implanting the crystals into her body that allow her to breathe underwater. It's beneath the surface of the sea she feels whole, unencumbered by the effects of a leg ravaged by injury. It's ironic that she would come to fall for a man who is utterly terrified of water.

When Fence and Ana meet, there is a fast attraction, but there are roadblocks. Ana fears getting close to any man, because she doesn't want anyone to see her crystals. And Fence is the kind of guy who prefers a bit of fun to real romance. He's a smooth operator, a ladies man, and no one is more surprised than him when he begins falling for Ana.

I liked the love story well enough. A cocky player isn't my favorite kind of hero, but Fence is charming enough. Ana's story isn't shocking, but as we learn more about her secrets, it peels back more of the layers in the world-building surrounding the Change.

I have to say that the series has a very different feel than it did in the early books, where the zombie-like gangas were featured so prominently. In this book, the zombies barely exist and it's all about the Atlantians as the nemesis in the story. It's less about a constant physical threat and more about the machinations of these powerful beings. I miss the zombies. They were cool. Everything is growing more and more complicated and I wish I would have reread the earlier books before I started reading this one. Most of it came back to me, but it took a little time. I wonder how easy it would be for a new reader to follow at this point.

Though the lion's share of the story follows Fence and Ana, we do see some familiar faces, like Quent, Zoe and Elliott. And we get some very, very short scenes with Wyatt and Remy. I guess we're being set up for a love story between these two, which bums me out. I was really hoping for a redemption story for Ian with Remy... and frankly, I'm not ready for Wyatt to get over his wife and kids, but I am getting ahead of myself.

I liked it. I appreciated having a physically imperfect heroine. There's some pretty good banter and a couple of love scenes to heat things up. But I wish we could have had more time for a relationship to develop between these two before they starting throwing around the L-word. It was only a week! Come on!!

I'm hoping the next installment goes back a little more to the gritty side I know this series has to offer. More zombies and bounty hunters, less crystals and swimming with the dolphins.

OK so Joss Ware has changed my mind. I've never picked up a apocalyptic book but I have to say that she made me like this genre. I tend to think of I am Legend when thinking of apocalyptic stories. I am positive this just became my favorite book of the series. I loved Fence. His personality is great. I loved the constant jokes and comments he made in (and out) his head. Fence and his friends are the few who remember the time before The Change. The wild has taken over the world. Zombies are created by the Elite who yearn to obtain immortality and connect with the people of Atlantis, but there is more at stake here. There are conspiracies. Family members can trust each other. Mutations help man survive. It becomes a fight for survival with the help of a girl whose mother was from Atlantis. She might hold the key to it all, but at what cost?

Don’t expect to have story that makes complete sense. After all, this is about a world very unlike our own. All the rules cannot be applied in this storyline. It’s a fiction book with a fantastic story. The author did a great job in creative methods for the life and interactions with the people of Atlantis. This was not just a plain old zombie book. It was much deeper than that with various plots intertwined giving the reader so much to follow and keeping the reader on my toes.

Warnings? This book does have some language in it. Okay, quite a bit of F-bombs. There are also many references to sex and several detailed scenes. None of these are easily avoidable, so skipping is not an option in this story.

One of the greatest things about this book was the various storylines so well put together that once one story ended, another picked up and carried it on. I got caught up in the Fence and Ana story while keeping an eye on Zoe and her man while keeping another eye on Wyatt and the mysterious woman wanted by zombies and man alike. I’ve never multi-tasked so much while reading. I actually enjoyed it.

I did wish there was less language and less sexual references, but the story was surprising great. I now want to read the next book in the series.

The wait is finally over...

It felt like I'd waited for this installment in the series for five years! However, it was only a year and a half. Hehehe

I will just start by saying, "I love Fence!" he is cute, witty, and sexy! I enjoyed the fact that Joss gave you just enough info to remind you of important events that occured in previous books. Fence survived the Change with his best friend and a few others only to wake up and find he didn't get any of the powers some of the others did. He is terrified of water and of course he meets Ana who loves the water. The zombies are very close to nonexistent in this book so zombie hatred there is no need to shy away. The Atlantieans are up to their worst and want Ana. Fence must face his biggest fear if he is to save Envy and Ana.

MinnChica: The Envy Chronicles has got to be my all-time favorite post-apocalyptic romance series. I love Ware's dark post-apocalyptic world where her Envy Chronicles world is set. It's violent, deadly and full of passion. Passion for survival and for the unexpected appearance of love. No one is undamaged. No one is who they seem to be. All you can be certain of is the appearance of the zombie like former humans wondering the earth and some form of a happy ending. Warning: Don't try to jump into the series with this book or you will be lost.

Night Forbidden introduces a new aspect to the world: mer-like people, aka Atlanteans. They aren't Disney merpeople either. They are the reader's key to learning about the sunken city of Atlanta. Through the water-loving people the reader learns about the crystals which have been sought after throughout the series. We also get to revisit some of the main characters from previous books. One of them, Zoe, about drove me nuts. I wanted to smack that chick.

I wasn't sure how I'd feel about the book once I realized the heroine could breathe underwater. I'm not a fan of mermaid books. I should have known Ware wouldn't let me down. I was fascinated with all aspects of the story. Now there is danger coming on earth and water. It added to the tension which was being built. I want more. Mostly I just want to read Remy's story, but I've a feeling that will be the last book.

If you're looking for a romance book that involves mutated people, zombies and world building which will suck you in, you've got to pick up Ware's Envy Chronicles. Each book is better than the last and I can't wait for the next installment to come out.

So if your a joss ware fan, you know joss books are a-may-zing! They're so so good ! And it's been ages...AGES since she's last released a book...so seeing this...made me do a happy dance..and I don't dance. Mostly, because I can't, but still....you get the point :p

It's been awhile since I last read this series... but right away I was brought back to the amazing post Apo. world that J.Ware created! I Abso love her world building... out of the many books I have read over the last year I would have to say this is the best "world" that has been created. Since yes... the wrold is this world... but really it's all changed and different from what we know it is... she writes it in a way that is truelly visible to the minds eye... I was sucked in again right way a...more It's been awhile since I last read this series... but right away I was brought back to the amazing post Apo. world that J.Ware created! I Abso love her world building... out of the many books I have read over the last year I would have to say this is the best "world" that has been created. Since yes... the wrold is this world... but really it's all changed and different from what we know it is... she writes it in a way that is truelly visible to the minds eye... I was sucked in again right way and found it very difficult to put this book down. The other aspect of this book that I personally loved that some might not is the strong story! There is less steamy hot scenes in here.. but given that the story line was so strong I hardly had issue! The series as a whole has a fantastic story arch and each book leaves you wanting the next one in your had as soon as the final page is read.. So for the creative world and story I loved this book...

The romance.... well left a few things to be desired.. ***might be spoilers from here on out... wouldn't want to accidently ruin anything for anyone... so be warned!!**** Firstly... the personality's of the 2 characters were a bit overly similar for my taste... and made the love story seem cliche... The water issues with home boy and the opposite for his lady made the eventually WAY to obvious... I mean come on, really, do you really think a guy with a water fobia is going to hook up with a water woman and NOT get over that within the book... way to predictable. I think it might have been better without the over played fobia that would lead to the obvious resolution. Speaking of the resolution to that fobia.. for how over done the fobia was throughout the book I was a bit disappointed in how quick he was to get over it... I mean awesome... you have gills and can breath under water... but I think it might take more than a min to get over a 20 year make you sick to be near the water fobia, I'm just sayin....

The twister at the end with her crystals was a big suprised and made me super sad for her... although I'm glad it all worked out in the end.. I think that twist redeemed for me in regards to my above rant on their similaritys and the obvious conclusion with Fence... plus I totally didn't see that happening!

So overall... I really did love this book and am going to have a really hard time wating for March!!!! I hope to see those evil Atlantians die out because Remy keeps that crystal safe and everyone can live happily ever after... and I really hope Ian turns out to be a good guy and that he gets a book too!!!(less)

I love this series. I wasn't sure how much I was going to like Fence's story simply because we haven't really learned or seen much about Fence in the previous books, but I was looking forward to the advancement of trhe series and a return to the world. I wasn't disappointed and I enjoyed the book - though I like some of the others in the series a little better (that's just a personal preferance tho).

Fence has depth and a history that isn't quite whatI was expecting, but in some ways (at least for me) I found Fence to be less well developed and not as "three dimensional" as some of the other characters. His personal issues with water and the reasons behind those isses (I won't give away the issues or reasons, but they are provided in detail fairly early on in the book) are understandable but for me, lack some of the serious import that other characters have with their issues. It is realistic though that not every character has a really serious and massive issue and that some things are more "hum drum and common" than others. It was refreshing to have a hero with a problem he considers massive and belittling that is really not such a huge deal after all. And i love the orony that goes with the power Fence has..you know, the one he's probably had all along but didn't realize was there due to specific circumstances and situations.

The female love interest has unique issues as well and though I can see how the relationship could happen, she never really appealed to me. There was nothing wrong with her, she just wasn't my favorite heroine and I found it hard to really get into the relationship portion of this book. I also found the ending of the book a bit unusual. The heroine is left in a situation I wasn't expecting and there is a possible fix presented at the end of the book, but we don't to see the results of said solution. Perhaps that is for the next installment? A continuation of the overall story/plot line for the series?

The overall story did move forward and there have been developments and revelations that have pointed toward a possible resolution to the situation this world is in. The solution is possibly a long-term one with a positive outcome for he humans and the world itself. The last story in this postion of the series (I can see how this could be continued into a spin off story line or could "morph" into a different direction entirely) will have to be Remington Steele's book - and it looks like she is going to end up with Wyatt (aren't we all surprised?). I don't really think there is another book between this one and Wyatt'/Remington, but I supposedI could be wrong. My biggest hope is that the story isn't going to play out exactly as I'm seeing it in my head because I prefer it when the author can surprise me and keep me guessing. I may still enjoy the book, but I rarely rate a book with 5 stars if I can predict it half way through - let alone if I can predict it before it is written. I will definitely keep reading and I still recommend the series and have it on my favorites list, but I enjoyed this one less than the others.(less)

Did anyone tell the cover artist that the hero of this novel is African-American? Or was the publisher worried that that an accurate picture might scare away prospective readers? While I have enjoyed this series in a guilty pleasure sort of way, I thought the portrayal of the one African American hero as an oversexed joker was just a teensy bit racist, although perhaps I am too sensitive. Another great instalment in the Envy Chronicles. The romance was very sweet and tender which is a bit of a change from the heavy angst of previous books although that is not to say there isn't serious issues in the story. I did love how Fence and Ana both had fears which helped to really cement their relationship with each other and the ongoing plotlines with the Elites and Atlanteans kicks up a gear. But overall for me the real strength of this book was the romance whic...more

This is a great addition to the series. In fact, it might be my favorite. I really enjoyed Fence and Ana. The underwater stuff was very creative and interesting. And, oh my God, is Joss Ware the queen of cliffhangers or what? The last book killed me ending with Ian over a cliff and Remy getting raped. Aaaah! And now is it Wyatt or Ian who find Remy at the end of this book? I just have to bite my fingernails and wait....

This wasn't my favorite of the series. I had a hard time relating to the romance as I just didn't really care for the leading male, Fence. I hated his he can have any woman he wants attitude and his lame cheesy sexual innuendos. He does get better by the end of the book, but he still was mediocre for me as a love interest.

But we got glimpses of Zoë and Quent and Remy and Wyatt which I loved!

The srories are well written and leave off with enough to make you eager for the next. Given the nature of the series, she could step up the pace a bit. Having to wait almost a year for each book just doesn't work for me.

Joss Ware has succeeded again in mixing elements of paranormal romance, post-apocalyptic drama, intense romantic situations, erotic moments and even humour into a brilliant suspenseful story.
Fence and Ana's story is heart warming but also at times heart wrenching.
There were so many twists and turns in this book. It never disappointed.
I jsut love how through the fifth book of the series the author sets the scene and characters for book six. Joss Ware is truly a gifted writer.

I never really warmed up to either of the main characters in this story, especially Fence. He came across as too suave and smooth ... a sort of "I can get any woman I want into bed in three seconds" mentality. The storyline was okay, although too many new characters were introduced but not really fleshed out. They seemed just sort of thrown in there.

Just keeps getting better. I was so mad when this book ended! LOL I really wanted to know more.
The end wen a little too quickly for me, but I guess that was just me.
Great story, the characters again, were well written and very well described.
I liked the plot twists as well and the addition of the other characters from previous books.
It just leaves you wanting more. Can't wait for the next one!
