I like this book a lot, which is weird for me because I usually don't enjoy contemporary romances. I think the main reason that I liked it so much is that I really connected with Gemma, the main character of the story. She is a PHD student, and comes to the small town of Edilean to research the Fazier family history and finding something to write her dessertation on. Somewhat lackluster addition to the series. I think enough has been said about Edilean. It's lost its flavor and is not a place that you can't wait to go back to. The author is cranking out Edilean tales by rote now. The magic is weak. And as you plow through this book hoping to find what was found in the earlier entries (surely its on the next page?) you find yourself disappointed.

After reading Moonlight in the Morning, I was curious at Tristan's situation with Gemma, who happened to be the main character in Heartwishes. I know Gemma and Colin are together from the previous Edilean books I've read, but I never knew how they got together. This book was a mix between mystery and romance and had I realized that it was #5 in the a series, I would have started from the beginning.

This was a fun easy read. The story was good, the characters are well-written and there was some excitement.

Gemma Ranford is a poor Ph.D student who's working several jobs to pay the bills while she works on her dissertation. When the opportunity to catalogue the family history of the wealthy Fraser family in a little town called Edilean comes up - complete with a cottage on the estate to live in and a $25,0000 salary - Gemma really wants it.

Once upon a time, Jude Deveraux was my all time favorite author. I devoured each and very book she had, re-read them, and kept them neatly on my bookshelves. Then I moved on to darker stories, sexier ones, and Ms. Deveraux moved away from her Montgomery and Taggert stories onto other families with a touch of paranormal, and we parted ways.

Last month I picked up Heartwishes, which is apparently the 5th installment to a series I hadn't read. (Naturally!)

This has to be one the blandest, most boring books I have ever read in my life. Conflict? The little it has makes absolutely no sense.

First, let me start by saying that everything in this book fell into place a little too easily. Everyone loved Gemma and she was just so perfect in every way. First, let me start by saying that everything in this book fell into place a little too easily. Everyone loved Gemma and she was just so perfect in every way. Everyone immediately got along with including the few people who don't get along with others. The only people Gemma didn't get along with were the people who were the bad guys. It was actually sickening to read how peachy keen everything seemed.

And pardon me, but isn't this story called Heartwishes? We really get to read anything about Gemma's research or the stone unless it's in quick spurts or the letter she reads at the very end. Kind of a cop-out if you ask me. I was more curious about the stone than Gemma and Colin's relationship.

This brings me to another point. The only romance novels I hate reading more than the ones where the couple fights every second they are not having sex is the ones where there is absolutely no conflict between the two. The only fight the two had, I thought Gemma had lost her mind. It seriously made no sense to me. Gemma doesn't like Colin's "jealousy" and says she can't handle it when Colin gets upset about her spending time with Tris alone, but Colin never acted on his jealousy. In fact, he had to tell her he was even jealous at all. But it's okay for Gemma to get hysterically agree and storm off when Colin says his ex-girlfriend is connected to a case he is working on. Gemma, who is carrying Colin's child, comes up with all these plans of living her life and raising the child without Colin after he tells her this. Completely ridiculous if you ask me, especially since Gemma goes around kissing everyone the entire novel. Not even kidding. It seemed like every other page, Gemma was kissing people for absolutely no reason. The first time she ever meets Colin's sister, Ariel, and Ariel tells Gemma she is getting married, Gemma turns and kisses Ariel's fiancé in congratulations. Not only had she just met the guy, I don't think they even talked to each other. A simple congratulation could have worked.

Overall, this novel bored me to death when it wasn't annoying me with its nonsensical behaviors. Had I known how it was going to be, I would have never wasted a penny on it. And I am a huge Deveraux fan.

Fluffy little average romance but I hate it when Jude Deveraux veers into the supernatural. I thought/hoped the Edilean series was going to be free from that.

One problem I'm having with the Edilean series is that it's very self-referential, but I can't remember the characters from one book to another. There were several inside jokes in this one that were unfamiliar to the protagonist, but I think were supposed to be references to things happening in previous books, like a little wink from JD to...more

I am really not a fan of the Edilean series, and this is yet another one that I did not enjoy from Jude Deveraux. I loved her historical romances and some of her contemporary romances were sweet as well, but this latest batch of magical realism romances are gag inducing.

I don't want to read a story about a perfect woman sweeping in and making everybody in a perfect little town fall in love with her. How nice that she gets the attention of two of the most eligible bachelors in town. How nice tha...more

I have read some books that were so bad i wanted to throw them against a wall when I finished reading. I hate to give up, hoping maybe a couple pages further something will come up that will save the entire book, but truth to be told... it almost never happens.
I am starting to think that it's a waste of time that I could have spent reading something I enjoy.

Penso que tenha sido a primeira vez que tenha começado um livro fora de ordem, um erro imperdoável uma vez que tenho pelo menos dois livros desta série em casa.

Também gostei do pequeno toque de magia que foi adicionado ao romance devido à existência da Pedra. O vilão é-nos revelado no ínicio do livro, mas para vilão não me encheu as medidas- talvez por ter lido recentemente livros em que os vilões são mesmo, mesmo cruéis e psicopatas.

Gostei de Colin no ínicio, mas mais para o fim já estava um pouco saturada deste personagem. Os seus ciúmes de Tris, a sua reserva, o facto de se mostrar apático em diversas situações acabaram por lhe retirar um certo encanto. Por outro lado, gostei de Tris desde o ínicio ao fim e estava curiosa para ler a história dele, mas infelizmente esta ainda não foi escrita.

Um romance leve, ternurento, mágico e divertido: que mais se pode pedir para passar uma boa tarde (ou tardes) de Verão?

momma - I read this book over the summer and it caught my interest because of the protaganist being a researcher and it was in NC/VA area and also because I have read the author a long time ago...I had a fellow in love with me and for valentines he thought chocolates,flowers and 5 books would be the perfect gift for me...boy was he right!

I thought Heartwhishes was a fun read, but a bit lacking. The details were fun but the author seems like she was making excuses for Colin to leave Jean. I was a bit disappointed that i spent ten hours straight reading this with enthusiasm, but found out that the book wasn't as good as i expected it to. A young woman getting her PhD in history is going to live in a guest house and write a family history based on an enormous collection of family letters, diaries, and other papers dating back to the early 1500s. This book was perfect to me.

Light, but still with a lot of action. I was hooked by this book the first time I read it, and still am in my 2nd reading. The characters have strong personalities that keep the plot running fast and with short time for descriptions. The usual love triangles and sweet heart-warming moments are all in there, as well as the mystery.
For the Edilean followers, it is pretty interesting to have some of the former main characters acting in this book.

I remember reading a lot of Jude Deveraux right after graduating from high school and liking it. So either my taste has dramatically changed or her writing has gotten a lot worse. The dialogue did not feel realistic...do 30 somethings really talk like that? And it felt like info was introduced just to justify a character acting in a certain way--the info didn't add to the story as a whole, didn't serve to create a cohesive narrative. It felt very jarring.

Edilean - the Fraziers, one of the founding families, though they keep to themselves a bit separate from the rest (hmmmm)... buggy/wagon makers in the beginning, now extrememly successful car sellers. Their oldest son, Colin - always wanted to be sheriff. In HS he developed a program for car dealerships, that his dad had fine tuned, and the paton sold, so Colin is independently wealthy... Out of college he met Jean, a bit older woman, a lawyer, dynamic, gorgeous - ane he moved in with her within...more Edilean - the Fraziers, one of the founding families, though they keep to themselves a bit separate from the rest (hmmmm)... buggy/wagon makers in the beginning, now extrememly successful car sellers. Their oldest son, Colin - always wanted to be sheriff. In HS he developed a program for car dealerships, that his dad had fine tuned, and the paton sold, so Colin is independently wealthy... Out of college he met Jean, a bit older woman, a lawyer, dynamic, gorgeous - ane he moved in with her within 4 months... and he worked for his father selling cars to please his father, though he hated it, and sold cars for much less than they were worth (having his own salary docked)... after 3 years, with fights with Jean to help blow off steam with great makeup sex, he's starting to acknowledge how unhappy he is when Jean comes home with a promotion to a firm in washington dc, and when he realizes that she's not even discussing it with him and just expects him to come with her, he packs his bags, and leaves... a couple of years later, Jean is back (rumor saying she was sleeping with a married partner & wife found out) and for the last year she is periferally in his life - he doesn't have sex with her anymore, because he knows he's not committing to her - but his family loves her, and she shows up and cooks for them, and it's easier to let her have her way... and he loves being sheriff of Edilean, living over the sheriff office, and having just bought a house no one knows he has.

Mom wants grandchildren, and she wants her children to be happy... and she knows he won't have a woman in Edilean, so she concocts quite a scheme - when a duke's ancester's home in England and all of the paper's are for sale, she buys them up (100s of trunks, and boxes, etc), and then, knowing the president of the university, advertises for grad history students to come and catalog and write a family history from the documents - living in one of their guest houses and with a salary. Her intention is to find a woman for her son Colin.

Gemma really wants the job, she has worked hard to get her master's degree, taking all sorts of jobs (a main source being tutoring the football team - while working out with them - creatively making it a successful time for all - they learned, she has a great body). The trunks should provide her primary sources for a topic for her Phd dissertation. and she gets the job...

Mom send Colin out to retrieve her from the guest house/boxes - and he is fascinated with her, and vice versa... but she is used to big men, and she treats him as she does 'her boys'. They spend time together, she backs off when she meets jean and sees how much the family loves her, she loves going through the boxes, and Colin helps for a few days with the heavy lifting as she organizes the materials, he takes her to see his house before anyone else knows heeven has it, and then he's gone for a week fighting a fire.. when he returns, he stops by her guest house, exhausted and dirty - she feeds him, sends him to shower, and when he passes out on her bed, and she can't resist brushing back the hair from his face & it wakes him, he pulls her to him, they have a quickie (she's willing) and he falls right back to sleep. When she tries to wake him so he'll roll off her, he calls her Jean - she leaves him the bed - hurt and angry she avoids him... A week later, at a get together, she gives him the cold shoulder, but eventually says something that reminds him of the night - and he realizes he hadn't dreamed their encounter... they make up, agree to take things slower, he agrees to totally break up with Jean (which angers Jean), they go furniture shopping together - fall into bed together, and locate the furniture in the house - their house... ahhh

and Gemma has read about Heartwish stone, and is trying to find more about it. For the Frazier family, when they make a wish, it comes true... she's asking questions, reading,... and when Dr. Tristan's 8 year old neice makes a wish that her father return from Iraq and they live in Edilean, her teddybear's necklace sparkles... and her father is injured enough to be discharged, but not enough he wont' heal, and someone in town takes retirement (I forget for which job), and it is offered to him, so this is where they'll live. and another pregnant Frazier makes a wish for twins (though the sonogram shows one)... and when she delivers 2 weeks later - she has twins... and of course Alea Frazier is wishing for grandchildren - and though Colin & Gemma only had sex once without protection (their quickie) and it was the wrong time of the month, she's pregnant. And though Gemma thought the heartwish stone would make a good dissertation, she decides that it would bring notariety to quiet Edilean so she goes with a different topic... and they realize they have to find the stone, because the power to grant wishes could be misused.

in the meantime, Jean's uncle (child molester, international thief) has shown up in town. He's after the heartwish stone. There are a couple of small burgleries of small jewelry, and ...

Dr. Tris's neice confesses to taking the necklace hidden in his fireplace, Gemma becomes its custodian, hiding it in plain sight with her makeup (it's in a compact), as she and Colin suspect the burgleries add up to someone trying to locate the stone. And the uncle makes his move, and Gemma and Jean foil him... and Gemma finds the full story of the stone in papers hidden in Shamus' art box that he took from the collection. hmmm

another story about Shamus to come? about Dr. Tris? hmmmm(less)

I get more involved with the little town of Edilean with each book I read in the series. I love how Jude Deveraux intertwines the characters of the seven families throughout each book. Heartwishes is one of my favorites so far, mostly because it pulls together a lot of loose ends from the previous books in the series. About Jude Deveraux

Jude Gilliam was born September 20, 1947 in Fairdale, Kentucky. She has a large extended family, and is the elder sister of four brothers. She began writing in 1976 and her first book, The Enchanted land was published in 1977 as Jude Deveraux. Following the publication of her first novel, she resigned her teaching position. Now, she is the author of thirty-one New York Times bestsellers. Jude won readers' hearts with the epic Velvet series, which revolves around the lives of the Montgomery family's irresistible men. Jude's early books are set largely in 15th- and 16th-century England, in which her fierce, impassioned protagonists find themselves in the midst of blood feuds and wars. Her heroines are equally scrappy -- medieval Scarlett O'Haras who often have a low regard for the men who eventually win them over. They're fighters, certainly, but they're also beauties who are preoccupied with survival and family preservation. Jude has also stepped outside her milieu, with mixed results. Her James River trilogy (River Lady, Lost Lady, and Counterfeit Lady) is set mostly in post-Revolution America; the popular, softer-edged Twin of Fire/Twin of Ice moves to 19th-century Colorado and introduces another hunky-man clan, the Taggerts. Deveraux manages to evoke a strong and convincing atmosphere for each of her books, but her dialogue and characters are as familiar as a modern-day soap opera's. "Historicals seem to be all I'm capable of," Jude once said in an interview, referring to a now out-of-print attempt at contemporary fiction, 1982's Casa Grande. "I don't want to write family sagas or occult books, and I have no intention of again trying to ruin the contemporary market." Still, Jude did later attempt modern-day romances, such as the lighthearted High Tide (her first murder caper), the contemporary female friendship story The Summerhouse, and the time-traveling Knight in Shining Armor. In fact, with 2002's The Mulberry Tree, Deveraux seems to be getting more comfortable setting stories in the present, which is a good thing, since the fans she won with her historical books are eager to follow her into the future.

Jude married Claude Montassir, with whom she had a son, Sam Alexander Montassir in 1997. They were eventually divorced. On Oct. 6th, 2005, Sam died at the age of eight in a motorcycle accident. Jude has lived in several countries and all over the United States. She currently lives in Charlotte, North Carolina and also has a home in the medieval city of Badolato, Italy. (less)
