I first saw an edition of this book in the home of a classmate's parents. She had been born in a refugee camp in the Soviet Union in the 1940s before her parents were allowed to immigrate to Canada. In the 1980s she bought this book as a gift for her father because of its scenes of the land of his birth. While the connections she described between her father's youth and the end of the Romanov era were of interest, it was only a framework for the amazing images in this volume. Wonderful photos that were reprinted from his actual glass slides. Enjoyed reading the background about his development of the photography process and the beginning of color photography. The photos displayed wonderful subjects and locations that would not have been seen at that time but were specifically commissioned by the Tsar. Loved seeing the people, their faces and clothing of the time.
