I really liked both of the leads, the stubborn brave little heroine, Ami, and the broody Marcus and I liked the story too - and was actually liking better than the first book Darkness Dawns - right up until the heroine's big reveal (which I knew about having read the spoilers). The 'what' of her secret was fine but the info dump to explain the 'why' was odd and klunky and not that interesting.

And I felt that it derailed the rest of the story as well, because after that point, the focus shifted from blood thirsty bad a$$ vamp villains to even badder 'men in black' villains and the book just sort of came to a fizzling conclusion.

I know that others had problems with Marcus getting over his 800 year unrequited love and falling for Amy so quickly, but you know it didn't bother me at all. I had gotten the feeling that his love in the distant past was more a romanticized idea of this unobtainable love and a young man's crush and then later, in the present time, a safe love that he didn't risk anything for, so I didn't mind that his feelings for Ami snuck up on Marcus when he wasn't looking.

Things were obviously left open for the next book, which I had me guessing - and hoping - that the next book would be about Bastien since his outcast status makes him interesting. My other choice would be the intriguing Seth, but I imagine Duvall is saving him for much later in the series. Edited to add - Yep, Bastien is up next in Phantom Shadows out October 2012.

Dianne Duvall delivers another action pack romance in book two of the Immortal Guardians series. If you read book one and loved it you sure can’t miss this one.

What is Ami? That’s what we was left with in book one. In this book you get Ami dumped on Marcus as his second and you don’t get a clue about what Ami is until mid way, then things starts unwrapping about what she is. Marcus has lived over 900 years. He has loved and lost, but that love was never returned in any way other than sisterly love. While determined to do his job as an Immortal, he doesn’t want to take on a second and mess up his life of lonely grumpiness. Time after time though, Ami covers his ass in battle making him more aware of her as a woman and not just his second.

The war between Immortals and vampires is heating up when the vampires are taken over by a “king” who organizes massive vampire attacks. In this world, vampires never work in more than 2-3 packs if at all and go crazy after a few years of turning. Immortals are gifted ones who when turned into vampires actually turn into Immortals. But Immortals haven’t given up on looking for a cure to help vampires, but vampires aren’t trying to help that process.

On top of everything as usual, things must be kept hush hush because humans can’t handle the knowledge of vampires, Immortals and aliens … oh my.

Ami and Marcus fall pretty quickly in love. Marcus’s biggest hang up is she isn’t Immortal or a gifted one, so he has to accept the thought she will die eventually, but probably long before he does. This doesn’t hang him up too long. Ami keeps getting shot up, cut up, stabbed, beaten, you name it, in battle and often the Immortals heal her, but Marcus never suspects she is more than human until she tells him she has premonitions of him in trouble and can find him when she wants. Then he starts to suspect all kinds of things, but reality will shake you up. I am going to give a spoiler here so please don’t click on the show more if you don’t want to know.

Without giving too much away, I can’t say to much more other than there is a side story of the vampires, but even a bigger threat that will play a bigger part in books to come. I felt there was a slightly cop out in this book on Ami…read the spoiler if you want to know it, but otherwise I won’t say any more.

I really liked the characters. Ami was strong, kicked ass but still had a feminine side. I love Seth as the oldest Immortal, who seems wise. But there is also something going on with him that we only see a hint of. Wings…well, she doesn’t explain them so I guess we have to wait to find out more. Marcus was an ok character. I didn’t like that he pined for a woman who was his friends wife for hundreds of years and thinks his love life is over. Just wasn’t really plausible in my mind.

While I loved the first book in this series, this book left me feeling blah. Not horrible, just too many things I didn’t like and wish she had a better story for. This won’t stop me from reading the next book in the series, but I won’t be anxiously awaiting it like I did this one.(less)

Once Marcus see’s that Ami can hold her own however he starts to respect her abilities and having her by his side in a fight somehow feels right. But can he chance caring for someone again while knowing that one day she will die and leave him? Ami hides a crucial secret though that could change everything in her budding relationship with Marcus. Will she ever be able to fully trust him enough to open up to him, or will it be too late?

Dianne Duvall is, without a doubt, my favorite debut author of 2011 and a rising star in the paranormal genre!

I absolutely loved the first novel in this series, Darkness Dawns, and was absurdly happy to find such consistency in writing with the series in this second novel. Dianne knows how to lure you in and captivate you in this exciting world of action and passion until the very last page! With dark, sexy and intriguing Immortals battling murderous and mysterious vampire villains the action never stopped and together, Marcus and Ami were one kick-ass team! Though Roland and Seth still claim a good portion of my heart Marcus definitely found his way in there with this story; perfectly flawed with a tortured soul - how could you not love this brooding hero? And Ami tops the list of butt-kicking paranormal romance heroine’s, saving the life of our capable hero on more than one occasion. Together these two have a blistering sensuality and are a lasting fit. Dianne has created a riveting story with its creative premises and memorable characters that was a wonderfully satisfying read. The Immortal Guardians are addictive and I can’t wait to read the next in the series! The cast of characters Dianne has brought forth are each incredibly intriguing and I cannot get enough of them; I need more, more, more!
Though Night Reigns has some continuing story lines from the first novel, it is set up well to read as a stand-alone. However I of course would recommend reading the series in order just for the fact that they are both superb reads!(less)

If you read Darkness Dawn, the first book in the Immortal Guardians series, you will remember Marcus. He helped Roland and Sarah by letting them stay in one of his houses, but was always very morose. We had learned then that he was mourning the leaving of the woman he loved, Bethany, six years prior. When this book begins, it’s 18 months later and Marcus is still mourning. Mourning and missing his best friend, knowing that she’s with the people she loved. But Marcus is not in a good place. So when Seth assigns him a Second and it’s the small red-haired woman who helped him during a fight with eight vampires, he’s irritated and suddenly having feelings he didn’t know he was still capable of feeling.

We were also introduced to Ami in Darkness Dawns. She was rescued by Seth, David and Darnell when they broke her out of a research facility where she was being tortured. They were able to find her because she was telepathically screaming out in pain and terror. They saved her, but you had to wonder if the small, quiet woman would ever be able to recover.

Fast forward two years and this is where Night Reign picks up. Ami is now out and about, living a somewhat normal life. She’s still terrified to be in a room with people she doesn’t know and she absolutely do not trust doctors or labs, but she’s moving forward. When she senses a fight happening not far from the video rental machine she was at, she investigates and immediately senses and Immortal Guardian in need of help. She assists with her guns and then leaves when she’s able to. What Ami doesn’t realize is that Immortal Guardian is soon going to be her assignment.

Seth, the leader of the Immortal Guardians, brings Ami to Guardian Marcus Greydon’s house. No one is more surprised than Marcus when Seth announces that Ami is going to be his Second. He’s done giving Marcus any leeway with his grieving for Bethany, so he’s instituting the rule that every Guardian has a second, which includes Marcus.

Marcus tries to fight having Ami in his house, because having her there stirs up feelings he didn’t think he could feel anymore. But when Ami shows up to save him twice during a fight, he realizes that having her at his back feels right. But soon those feelings grow to something more than friendship and appreciation and Marcus begins to question if he can follow those feelings with a woman he knows he’ll only have for a short period of time.

Marcus, Ami and the rest of the Immortal Guardians are soon in fight with vampires as someone new, the Vampire King, has taken over and is attempting to organize an army. But what that army wants comes into question when Ami realizes that drugs that are being used on Guardians during fights are the same as what was used on her when she was captured. Soon the Guardians are closing ranks to protect their own and determine who exactly is involved.

Both Marcus and Ami have some pretty serious issues to overcome before either of them can move forward. Marcus needs to let go of what he felt for Bethany. He knows that she’s gone and she was always meant to be with his “brother” Robert, but he’s had difficulty letting go of his grief…until now. Once Ami enters his life, he starts to realize that what he had with Bethany was a fraction of what he feels for Ami. Now he must decide if he can let himself feel anything for Ami knowing, as a human who is not a gift one, that he’s going to have to give her up in a short number of years.

Ami has her own demons and secrets. She survived months of being tortured after her captives killed her friends, but that time left her with her own special version of PTSD. She has to learn to trust people again along with dealing with new feelings she’s never encountered before Marcus. Everything she felt for Marcus went against how she had been raised, so she had to deal with those feelings as well. But what terrified her more was thinking that Marcus would be out fighting without her at his back.

A fast-paced, exciting addition to the series. Can’t wait for the next one.

เราชอบหนังสือที่สร้างสรรนะคะ แต่เรื่องนี้เราคิดว่ามันสร้างสรรมากเกินเหตุ (สปอยล์) รวมเอาทั้งเรื่องการข้ามเวลาของหญิงสาวที่มาร์คัสหลงรัก แล้วก็มาถึงความเป็นมนุษย์ต่างดาวของเอมี มันออกนอกหน้าต่างมากเกินไปสำหรับเราค่ะ นอกจากนี้เราไม่รู้สึกถึงความน่ากลัวของกลุ่มคนร้าย อ่านแล้วคิดว่า ยังไงก็คงสู้พวกพระเอกไม่ได้ ก็เลยทำให้ไม่มีความรู้สึกว่าต้องลุ้นเอาใจช่วยอะไรคาแร็คเตอร์ในเรื่องเลย

สิ่งเดียวที่ทำให้เรื่องนี้มีความน่าสนใจสำหรับเราก็คือ คาแร็คเตอร์ของบาสเตียน และการเล่นประเด็นว่า แวมไพร์ที่ชั่วร้ายนั้นไม่ได้เลว เพียงแค่พวกเขาเป็นมนุษย์ที่ไม่มีดีเอ็นเอที่จำเป็นในการเปลี่ยนเป็นแวมไพร์ ทำให้พวกเขาค่อย ๆ เสียสติทีละน้อย ประเด็นนี้เป็นจุดเดียวที่ทำให้เราคิดว่าเรื่องน่าสนใจ และมันก็คือเหตุผลเดียวที่เราตัดสินใจตามอ่านต่อเล่มสาม

I really liked the set up in Darkness Dawns, and needing a shake up to my reading and a distraction I've been reading this series. I loved the first 70% or so of this book. The tension between Marcus and Ami was great and the characters were great. I like where the series is going, with an interesting plot continuing between each book that I find myself interested it. I actually enjoy when the book cuts away from the mains and switches to the villains or other "good guys"

Dianne Duvall does it again! After a spectacular series debut, she follows it up with a stunning sequel. We met Ami in the last book and know she’s had it rough, but to learn more of her story and see her find the relationship she does with Marcus is so heartwarming you could cry. Marcus hasn’t had it easy himself, but he gets everything he never thought to look for in Ami and it’s amazing to watch his transformation from reckless curmudgeon to overprotective lover.

We come back to the world of the Immortal Guardians in the second book, Night Reigns. The main characters are Marcus and Ami with a lot of the supporting characters from Darkness Dawns making their presence known. Marcus is very independent and has given up on love and trust. Ami doesn't trust many people, except for Seth, David, and Darnell, who have made a big impact on her life. I have to admit that I fell asleep for about two hours of this audio book, but I'm not sure I missed anything. The background story is interesting, but not well developed. I would like to read a book that focused just on the alien/angel/vampire thing going on here and not so much on black-eyed, black-haired, 6' tall men having sex with round-bodied, red-headed, pale-eyed women. I should have avoided another book by this author after the last one, but I caved to the audible.com suggestion.

My complaint about audiobooks....I can read a book in a single evening. With the limited amount of time I can listen to an audiobook, it usually takes a week to get through the book. I had to really work at my self-control with this one. When I was about 2 hours into the 12 1/2 hours of audio, I got the print copy of it in (it was on sale online and I knew I wanted it in my permanent library, so I bought a copy of the book.) I had to really work at my self-control with this one. When I was about 2 hours into the 12 1/2 hours of audio, I got the print copy of it in (it was on sale online and I knew I wanted it in my permanent library, so I bought a copy of the book.) The problem with that was....I really wanted to just pick up the book and finish it, but I exerted my VERY LIMITED self control and stayed with the audio version. Are you getting the idea? This book was another fabulous edition into this series that I can already see is going to be a favorite on my shelves.

I have fallen in LOVE with all the characters...Roland & Sara (the couple from book 1), Seth (the leader of the Immortal Guardians), David (the second-in-command), Darnell, Bastion (the Immortal outcast), Etienne/Lisette/Richart (French sibling Immortals), Chris Reordan (the human fix-it-all/cleaner.)

This particular book though is about Marcus and Ami. Marcus is an 800 year old Immortal. Eight years ago, the woman that he's loved almost all of those 800 years became lost to him and he's been in mourning ever since then.

Ami was found by Seth and David in the last book. They found her by following her silent screams as she was tortured for months until they finally located her. She's a huge mystery. At the end of book #1, we knew that there was something more to her, but no clue as to what that was. Because Marcus is getting more and more careless with his life, Seth places Ami with him as his Second. He's hoping that by doing so, Marcus will have something else in his life to focus on besides his own misery. Seth didn't count on them falling in love.

I like the way this relationship developed. Marcus is NOT happy to have Ami with him, but she is one tough chick and will not let him push her out of his life. This is a huge thing for her because at the end of the last book, she wouldn't even talk to anyone she was so scared and traumatized from what happened to her. She's just as intimidated by Marcus, but she never lets him see it. The scenes with her at the beginning of their relationship...OMG, I loved her gumption and strength!

And once Marcus begins to realize what an incredible person she is, he can't help but admire her too. There are several times in this book where things aren't revealed and Ami pays the price. All of these guys become really, super protective of her. I found it ironic how protective they all are of her, but she continued to get really hurt over and over again. Then they would attack each other for letting her get hurt...again.

I have to admit though, I was slightly let down by the reveal of Ami's secret. It just seemed out of place in this series, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out. Then there is Seth's secret...we got a huge couple of clues about that in this book and I have a theory. We'll see.

I am so excited about book #3 which I believe to be Bastion's story. My heart aches for him. He has spent 200 years thinking of himself as a vampire and trying to save the vampire race when he is instead an Immortal. The other Immortals don't trust him and he has such a good heart. Already I am ready for his story. I have a feeling it's going to be really emotional and you all know that I love those!

I enjoy reading about a woman who defies the odds and expectations of others; to not only wow the other characters in a book, but stuns and amazes a reader too. Ms. Duvall does all that and more in the second installment of her hard hitting but cheeky Immortal Guardian series.

Night Reigns gave me not only another great tale but a surprising twist at the three quarters mark that knocked my socks off. Never could I have imagined where the story would take me, certainly not what was revealed! Because of this new slant, Night Reigns ends up being a clever, unique, and brilliantly executed book that readers will appreciate. Paranormal fans are going to be thrilled at the novel direction Ms. Duvall has taken because it breathes new life into what we think we know about vampires and their battles, and their origins.

When I refer to ‘cheeky’, I’m talking about the underlying sense of humor and fun the main characters have with their friends, amongst themselves and with other secondary characters. The author did an amazing job of infusing personality and emotion into the story and her placement of when she has the protagonist’s joking around seemed real, timely and very natural. It made the hero and heroine very likable and insured that I’d be very interested in the secondary characters when their turn to be in the spotlight arrives. Believe me, Ms. Duvall has peppered her tales with secondary characters well-rounded enough to inspire a commitment from me to read about every one of the amazing men who make up the team of Immortal Guardians. There were wonderful hints of conflict, of men who resist love or don’t think it’ll ever happen to them. Not in their line of ‘work’.

My favorite cheekiness is between the hero, Marcus and the heroine, Ami. Their flirting was thoroughly entertaining and the repartee quick and witty. Even when the drama and suspense had me biting my nails, it wasn’t overly dark or depressing. The conflict was solid and well thought out.

Ami was the biggest surprise for me. She had been through so much horror in her life that to find her willing to stand by her man, once she admits he is her man, even though it meant facing a fear that practically crippled her, was an amazing journey of growth. One that completely engaged me. Despite all the reasons she has to mistrust people, she doesn’t shy away from learning all she can to be the best she can be.

Marcus on the other hand, is at first, a jerk. He’s not actually written that way but from what I could tell from the other secondary characters, he had a certain reputation. They respected him, thought fondly of him, when they didn’t want to whap him upside the head, and they feared for him. He was in a dark place in his life when the story opened. His healing journey and his eventual opening up of his heart was wonderfully done. He certainly was and is an effective Guardian, and I’d trust him to guard me anytime, but he had a long way to go to brush up on his ‘people’ skills.

The one person who kept him in line, for the most part, was Seth. He’s sort of a father figure, mentor and boss. He’s also one of those fascinating secondary characters I referred to earlier. There’s something about him that is quite intriguing. He’s a mystery. However, in Night Reigns, the author laid the groundwork for some very thought provoking possibilities that begs further exploration. If the author’s intentions were to hook a reader on future books, she was successful. Add Roland and Chris into the mix and there’s plenty of deliciousness, conflict and interest to go around. On top of that are Darnell and David – more characters that make up the Guardian community. At times, while reading, I felt like I was in a candy store. So many choices to choose from -- who will Ms. Duvall write about next? I can’t wait to find out!

My immediate satisfaction was guaranteed at least with Marcus and Ami. Before the protagonists hit the sheets, Ms. Duvall seduced my brain earlier on with a wonderful sensual buildup. That’s one of the things that were so great about this story. When the heat between the two finally combusted, the author’s use of language made it crystal clear how satisfying the physical relationship was between them. Even the happily ever after was romantic and sentimental. But not too sappy; the other Guardians made sure of that. One of my favorite giggles came from what Marcus imagined to make his point with Seth. I had fun.

Night Reigns is another jewel from the talented Ms. Duvall. This story is action packed with sultry shenanigans and diabolical bad guys, guaranteeing readers a book filled with adventure and romance. Marcus and Ami are a great couple and watching them fall in love was completely entertaining and fun. The ideas are fresh and the story arc more complex than at first believed. I suspect that Ms. Duvall has more surprises up her sleeve for characters and readers alike. I want to be first in line for her next book because this series is just that good.

DD...O.M.G. This book was so awesome! This picked up right where Darkness Dawns ended. It's a year and a half later and Marcus is a live on the edge sorta guy...and that's quite an edge, as he is an immortal (and very little can actually kill him). This was an appealing story. I especially loved the exciting opening when Marcus was attacked and saved by Ami. I particularly liked that Ami came to Marcus's rescue even though she was scared and how she lightened Marcus's attitude. He needed her to bring him out of his rather melodramatic funk. She is one of my favorite heroines. Strong but funny, she has ‘human’ vulnerabilities that made her easy to like and relate to. I was also fascinated by her powers and the secret behind them (although a bit improbable), which made her a fabulous second.

Unfortunately, Marcus realizes how easily he could care for her and fights his attraction to her. Ami also has scars and working with Marcus really challenges her. I admired her perseverance. Marcus also has issues having a Second and being 'forced' to work with a woman he comes to respect and is attracted to make for some absorbing reading. I enjoyed how he is tough but uncomfortable around Ami. The author developed both characters which had me involved in their interactions from the start. I am also very interested in Seth, the enigmatic leader of the Guardians. He seems very powerful and I would like to know about this past. I liked the affection between Seth and Ami and how Marcus was a bit jealous in the beginning. The devious and evil villain also makes for good reading as he is amassing a vampire army to hopefully bring down the Guardians. I would like to also know more about Bastien, the immortal who shows compassion to vampires while the rest of the Guardians feel they are a lost cause and can only become evil.

Fast paced, cool world building, and two strong main characters make this the paranormal series unbeatable.

Ich habe mich wahnsinnig auf den zweiten Band der Reihe gefreut. Schon der erste gefiel mir ausgesprochen gut und ich war neugierig ob die Autorin das Niveau halten kann. Was soll ich sagen, das kann sie. Ich finde Dunkler Zorn sogar noch einen ticken besser als den Vorgängerband. Anfangs war ich mir nicht ganz sicher ob Ami wirklich die Frau ist, die Seth im ersten Band aus diesem Labor gerettet hat. Das kommt davon wenn man Stellen die nichts mit den Protoganisten zutun haben nicht so aufmersksam liest. Wird mir auch eine Lehre sein. Jedenfalls als ich mir dann sicher war das Ami diese Frau aus dem ersten Band ist, fand ich die Geschichte noch interessanter, schließlich wusste man als Leser auch nicht was es mit ihr auf sich hat. Das war doch alles sehr geheimnissvoll. Die Autorin hat dieses Rätsel auch erst fast am Ende gelöst und ich war wirklich platt, obwohl ich mit so einer Möglichkeit gerechnet hatte. Dadurch bekommt die Reihe noch die ein oder andere Möglichkeit dazu und ich bin gespannt ob die Autorin das ausnutzt.

Marcus und Ami sind zusammen ein sehr schönes Paar, die Geschichte der beiden gefiel mir sehr gut. Sie nähern sich so langsam aneinander an, vor allem Marcus muss die Vergangenheit erstmal ruhen lassen und glaubt mir, das ein oder andere hat er geflucht weil Seth tatsächlich recht hatte.

Apropo Seth, der Anführer der Wächter wird immer geheimnissvoller. Ami scheint die Einzige zu sein die die Wahrheit kennt und ich frage mich wie lange es wohl dauert bis auch die Leser eingeweiht werden. Einen kleinen Vorgeschmack hat die Autorin uns ja gegeben und der wirft jede menge Fragen auf. Gefallen hat mir auch die Beziehung von Seth und Ami und auch wie David un Darnell mit ihr umgehen. Sie ist für die drei wirklich entweder wie eine Tochter oder aber wie eine Schwester und die Herzlichkeit die in der Luft liegt wann immer sie sich sehen... ja, das fand ich schon gut. Es hatte sehr was von Familie.

Ami allgemein ist mir sehr sympathisch und zusammen mit Marcus, bilden die beiden wirklich ein gefährliches Duo. Zumal das jetzt endlich mal eine Liebesgeschichte ohne große Dramen war. Ich bin gespannt wie es mit den beiden weitergeht und ich hoffe das Ami ihre Familie irgendwann wiedersehen wird.

Im nächsten Band spielt Bastien die Hauptrolle. Dem stehe ich doch skeptisch gegenüber, mit Bastien habe ich es nicht so, aber wer weiß, vielleicht überrascht er mich ja. Mir stellt sich auch die Frage wieviele Bände die Reihe wohl haben wird....

Fazit

Dunkler Zorn hat alle meine Erwartungen erfüllt, ja es war sogar noch besser als der erste Band der Reihe. Ami und Marcus sind ein tolles Paar, die Liebesgeschichte ist klasse, steht aber nicht total im Vordergrund. Viel Gefühl, viel Action und vieeele Geheimnisse, Fragen und Enthüllungen. Besser ging es wirklich nicht. Eine Reihe die man unbedingt lesen muss.(less)

I'm giving this book a 4 because I am enjoying the story and it left me with enough questions that I'm eager for the next book. I like the characters, especially the hero/heroine. Hot...hot...hot.

I will admit though that I wanted to rate this book a 3 because of a reoccurring theme that Ms. Duvall is putting in these books. I am really enjoying the Immortal Guardians Series. It is so different than the Black Dagger Brotherhood by Ward or the Carpathians by Feehan and I think that is why these stories appeal to me. They do fight a race of vampires that have origins similar to theirs but there is also a hidden agenda element of government that is a threat to the Protectors. So far the series has introduced a core of guardians--Seth, David, Marcus, Roland, Bastian,and Sara are main characters in this second book. Ami...more

I am really enjoying this series. It's been surprisingly easy to get into despite it having a couple of failings in my eyes. These are personal preferences and gripes, and by no way diminish the excellent quality of the book overall. They just annoy me a little.

First up is the narrative or writing style. First up is the narrative or writing style. I've always far preferred the first person past tense for this genre, however, although I find this style; third person with shifting perspectives harder to get into, I did feel it allowed us to see a lot more than we would normally with 1st person past. For starters it gave us an insight into the male lead as well as the female, and also various side characters too. This did help round out the story.

Next, and it's difficult to be specific here for fear of giving too much away, but one of the tools used to explain phenomenon in this world is one I don't subscribe to. I like ghosts, gods, angels and all sorts of interesting fantasy ideas, but tending more towards the sci-fi arena is not my cup of tea. So, I did switch off a bit when Duvall headed in that direction.

And finally, the ending. Everything was going along just fine until the last page and I felt totally let down. I understand cliff-hangers, I actually enjoy most of them. Sets you up for what's to come. But I do adamantly require my books to have a closure of sorts in each instalment. This one was left wide open.

So, with all of those gripes you'd think I'd mark this book down and consider not picking up another in the series. You'd be wrong. Duvall has created, on the whole, an interesting and dynamic world with many questions begging to be answered. Little hints along the way keep you intrigued and continue to pull you further into the story itself. I like these books despite my personal gripes and believe that Duvall may in fact, be aiding me to overcome some of my hang-ups. Because there is no way I am not picking up the next when it is released.

There is simply too many good points to this series, that outweigh the gripes.

So, this one gets a respectable 7/10: "Good solid read, something to get your teeth into" on the NBRS, despite the gripes.(less)

I personally believe that book 1, Darkness Dawns, covers much of the necessary world building and back story, and should be read first. However, enough information is provided to get around that if this book is read first. In Night Reigns, we are reunited with the Immortal Guardian's cast we first met with Darkness Dawns, however, this book is about Marcus Grayden and his new second Amiriska (known as Ami - she was the woman rescued at the end of Book 1), who inevitably fall in love. I really do like the easy manner of Ms. Duvall's writing and was able to knock this book out rather quickly. There is still a war raging between the Immortal Guardians and vampires. Immortal Guardians secretly protect the human race from vampires - both from physically coming to harm from them as well as from knowing that either race exists. However, the stakes are even higher in this book as we learn another vampire has tried to take over where Bastien left off. Only instead of trying to find a cure for and manage vampirism, this new leader is committed to the destruction of the Immortal Guardians and will create and destroy as many new vampires as he can to meet that end thus allowing him free reign to be "king". Added to the mix is a secret military group that knows about Ami, had her in their custody at one time, and is anxious to get her back. There is also a new weapon at their disposal that can incapacitate the Guardians making things a bit more complicated. The story was good, but I liked the character development more. I loved learning more about Marcus and Ami, and was really moved by their love story and the chemistry they shared. Additionally, I enjoyed the glimpse we got of Seth's background (and maybe the origins of the Guardians), and the way he, David and Darnell fiercely protected Ami, becoming her surrogate family. Rounding out the cast were Roland and Sarah (the h&h from book 1), Chris Reordon (the human who runs the backend of the IG network), and the French brother & sister trio of Immortal Guardians and it provided for a great supporting cast to the ongoing series. My prediction is that Bastien and Dr. Melanie Lipton (newly introduced doctor in the IG network) are the next couple of choice. I have to say that Bastien really grew on me in this book and I am anxious to hear more about him.

The only peeve I had with this book is when we learn Ami's "background". It's too out there and even cliche for me. I totally get that there has to be a story there as to why she was held by the military-like unit that she was rescued from, one that enables her to integrate more with the Guardians and create some question as to whether she is a gifted one or vampire and even one that allows for her to stay with Marcus "long term", but the one they use just didn't work for me. I thought it was handled so much better with Sarah in Book 1. Nonetheless, this was a thouroughly enjoyable book and I eagerly await the next book in the series.

This book is really hard for me to rate. Even now that I have finished it, I am not sure how much I enjoyed it. The best bits for me were Marcus, a hero I would like to have as my own. I still enjoy reading about Roland, from the previous book. Seth still intrigues me. I would definitely read a book about him. Bastien is another character that I enjoy.

Oh this is another swoony read by Diane Duvall. The first was Darkness Dawns (my review linked) and really needs to be read first. This book takes place not long after the first and you are already introduced to several of the characters and their situation. In this book Marcus, a immortal guardian is paired with Ami. This too gave me a feeling of deja vu.. It was just like Sherrilyn Kenyon's book series again. The story picked off where the first one left us hanging. It is Marcus and Ami's story. Beautifully narrated though a tad bit boring sometimes, it did make an okay read. I loved especially the connection of the Immortals and cats. So that has been favorite part:

So he transforms into an Immortal Guardian later on and then he waits hundreds and hundreds of years until that woman is born in the future/present. He still only loves her from afar because he still feels loyal to that dude from the past. Even though she hasn't met him yet! Sheesh!! But really, it doesn't seem that confusing in the book, I promise!! LOL! Anyways, so the time comes where she travels back in time and Marcus is beside himself. He is super depressed and takes all these crazy risks just so he can feel something other than his broken heart.

Seth (Leader of the Immortal Guardians) places Ami with Marcus as Marcus's "Second". The Immortal Guardians have these "Seconds" who are usually humans who do all the dirty sort of work for the Immortal Guardians. Not dirty work so much, just more of a helper. They run errands during the day (I.G.'s can't go in sunlight similar to vampires), they patch up the I.G.'s when they get hurt in battle, I think they also help fight when the need arises but that's pretty rare since I.G.'s are pretty hard to kill and Seconds are only human! So Seth put Ami and Marcus together, hoping to help Marcus out of his unhappiness. Its also to help Ami, as she's really traumatized by her torture at the hands of the government. She's really shy around new people, etc.

You can imagine that sparks inevitably fly. The war, of sorts, is still ongoing with the vampires. I.G.'s don't really want to kill vampires but in these books, vampires go crazy after a few years of being bitten and IG's have to take them out so that none of them get discovered. But someone is organizing the vampires and they need to find out who that is.

There are so many threads woven (weaved?) into the story that it would be too difficult to sort through them here. But some of the major points are: #1) Sexy-time is really hot! #2) The characters are all unique (in my opinion) and the author writes them in such a way that you really care about what happens to them. #3) There's this mystery that goes through each of the books and its sort of one big mystery but they also solve little parts of it along the way so you feel satisfied at the end of each book. But the mystery is still intertwined and you really need to read them all and in order to get the whole picture. #4) There are plenty of laughs, plenty of fights and plenty of emotions.

I really feel like this series has it all. I don't think I've enjoyed a book as much as I've enjoyed these. Please, please do yourself a favor and give them a chance. I swear you won't regret it. And because, if you read them, you'll be as hooked as I am, I should let you know that the author has a website and on it, she has transcripts of "interviews" with some of the main characters in the books. So you'll have a little something to tide you over until the next one comes out!(less)

First I am a big fan of Dianne's, I absolutely loved Darkness Dawns and waited quite impatiently for Night Reigns. Three quarters of the book did not dissapoint; Marcus and Ami are awesome together and I loved the fact that Ami is as bad assed as Marcus is HOT! The um love scenes......well lets just say I am still fanning myself and has made for some interesting...well never mind. I liked that Roland and Sarah were still prominent players, I enjoyed them this time almost as much as last time and...more

I went into this as a fan of the series and remain one after this installment.

There were some plot turns in this story that made me scratch my head. Yes, the heroine's backstory threw me for a loop but by then I already loved her. Had I known what she was, I don't think I would have given this one a chance. The hero, Marcus, was everything I crave in my vamps -- old, tall, brave, a little crazy, sexy, and vunderable. I was a little irked that his backstory was thrown in messy-like. I thought I h...more I went into this as a fan of the series and remain one after this installment.

I was a little irked that his backstory was thrown in messy-like. I thought I had missed a book somewhere. Thank goodness, the story did not depend solely on the love story. The charcter mix reminds me of Black Dagger with the family feel of the Guardians when they were all together. There is a good suppy of sexy vamps for future books. I don't even care what order they come in. I'm just enjoying the forward movement of the story.

My only complaint is that there are quite a few threads to follow and Ms. Duvall is not a fast writer. This time I put in bookmarks so I would not feel lost in 1 or 2 years when she kicks out the next one. Don't get me wrong, the complexity is all good. I am just bad at remembering all the details and putting them in there proper perspective.

I love the fighting and level of danger that is ever present for the Guardians. I am feeling Seth and Bastian big time. The mystery of Seth had me glued from the first book but I would have never guessed what he was. Nice move Ms. Duvall! Bastian is a hot mess and I can't wait for him to get sorted out. I see a 'love doctor' in his future.

If you are a vamp fan and don't mind a story that takes liberties with it's paranormal mix, jump in. You won't regret it. This is not YA although there is not as much sex as the first one. The ending was very abrupt but there was nowhere left for the story to go. It was complete as far as the lovers were concerned. Ms. Duvall is building up to a nasty confrontation of good vs. evil with alliances that will come from many interesting directions. Oh yeah, the bad guys are very bad. Me Like! (less)
