Now I enter into the 10th installment of the Love at Stake series and am reintroduced to Connor Buchanan. Connor is a vampire on the cusp of his 500th birthday and is going through what his friends are calling a mid-life crisis. Is he buying fancy cars and being a sugar daddy to countless 200 year old whipper snapper vampire women? No... Instead, he's wallowing in the sorrows and deeds of his long existence. He feels he is unworthy of anything good; he's convinced that he is bound to a shame/guilt filled un-life until he can finally die and take his earned place in Hell. Connor has no problems risking his neck in the name of duty and often disregards orders in order to place himself in dangerous situations.

It is during one of his defiant bouts that his path crosses with a severely wounded (but of course very beautiful) woman he believes to be a vampire severely wounded because she wanted to spare lives during an attack on humans just moments before. He decides that he must have her wounds tended so that he can question her on the events of the evening, so he gathers her in his arms - against her semi-conscious protests - and transports her to his home base. It is soon accidentally discovered that she is an angel of death, not a vampire, and Connor must transport and guard her until the Vamp organization can determine what should be done with her.

When the woman regains consciousness, we learn that her name is Marielle and that she is a rebellious deliverer of souls (aka angel) who has been swayed by her compassion one too many times. She was banished by the Heavenly Host for wanting to spare the lives of three children that were killed during the vampire attack that evening. De-winged and bleeding from the wounds inflicted during her conflict/banishment, all Marielle wants is to return to Heaven and to do so, she believes it is her duty to help Connor and his Vamp society protectors take down their #1 enemy.

And so begins their tale...

My overall impression is that it is a cute book, but probably not one that I would actively recommend...

I liked Connor and Marielle separately as well as together. Marielle's naivety surrounding the mortal world and the inner workings (including going to the bathroom) were cute and that made her endearing to me. Connor is a man's man who is sexy, brave, and flawed in a sexy "I-want-to-save-him" kind of way. My biggest complaint regarding Connor was his always present self doubt berating; I simply tired of hearing him say again and again that he's a "cold hearted bastard" and unworthy of peace, happiness, and love...

There were a lot of 'in between' moments in the story, where it felt like I was just waiting for something to happen, but nothing really did. The action that did take place, no matter the placement in the book/story, was quick to happen & move on, leaving me thinking, "that's it?" The true action of the story took place within the last 60'ish pages. All the build up between Connor and Marielle ended on an anti-climatic note that felt rushed and/or forced and eluded to an outcome that is so similar, if not identical, to the other couples employed by Romatech.

After finishing the book, I questioned if it was really a worthy read: 360'ish pages of 'eh' story with cute characters; the main/built up action taking place primarily within the last 60'ish pages; an ending with a so-so-quick-fix resolution. The answer was not really - it was just OK - 2 out of 5 stars.

A note on the cover of the book: Though the man on the cover is absolutely to die for (no pun intended) gorgeous and drool worthy, he does not tie in to the description of Connor. Connor bright red hair, not dark brown. He wears traditional Scot apparel, not button down black shirt/black pants. Marielle has golden wavy hair down to the small of her back vs. what appears to be dyed blonde hair that hits just past her shoulders. (less)

while I really do like this series, I'm not totally obsessed about it. There were 2 or 3 books I really loved in it and the rest were entertaining. I know I will always keep reading the books in it that get release because I do enjoy this series big time. This book was actually better than I thought it would be. Funny, humorous, some hahaha moment that crack me up and make my stomach hurt (because I laugh so hard) and make me throw noodles at my bed when read this (true!) => note to my self : don't eat anything on your bed, it will be disaster :P

The story is good,not my favorite, not the best at this series, but I'm enjoy it.

Because I'm so lazy to write review about the story, characterization, etc, so just enjoy my character image for both hero and heroine.

Loved this book! it's on my top 5 favorite "Love at
Stake" books. Ms. Sparks did a great job with this
couple. It was refreshing from the usual human/vampire
couple, it was getting a bit annoying...

So this book is about Connor and Marriele, this couple
is hilarious together! I laugh a lot. Marriele is so
sweet, innocent and so naive when it comes to being

Another fun read in Kerrelyn Sparks' Love at Stake series! Each story builds from the previous (9) books, but each couple's situation in each book is unique from any other. The common thread is that of Romatech Industries that sells synthetic blood to humans and vampires, and the MacKay Security company and its employees who protect the Vamps from the Malcontents and others who might seek to harm the Vamps. The Malcontents are vampires that would rather drink and kill the human source.

They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, but you certainly can be drawn in by one! That’s exactly what drew me to buy Kerrelyn Sparks Vampire Mine – of course after reading the back cover.

Vampire Mine combines some of the more tradition vampire traits (can’t go out in the sun, drink blood, increased strength) and some of the newer ones (mind reading, teleportation) to form a vampire you wouldn’t want to mess with. Out of all the vampire books I’ve read, I’ve never had a vampire cross paths...more They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, but you certainly can be drawn in by one! That’s exactly what drew me to buy Kerrelyn Sparks Vampire Mine – of course after reading the back cover.

Vampire Mine combines some of the more tradition vampire traits (can’t go out in the sun, drink blood, increased strength) and some of the newer ones (mind reading, teleportation) to form a vampire you wouldn’t want to mess with. Out of all the vampire books I’ve read, I’ve never had a vampire cross paths with an angel. Vampire Connor Buchanan crosses path with a fallen angel. He’s trying to gain forgiveness for sins he committed centuries ago and decides to help Marielle, the fallen angel, get back to heaven.

Helping Marielle also means helping vampires in general. In Vampire Mine, vampires drink a synthetic blood (like True Blood) and work to keep themselves a secret from most humans. But there is a group, The Malcontents, who are out to wipe out the ‘good’ vampires and rule the humans. The Malcontents leader has been in hiding for a while, but is reportedly back and meaner than ever. Using the linger remnants of Marielle’s Deliver powers (a Deliver is an angel who helps souls move on), they set out to track down The Malcontents and rid the world of them.

It won’t be easy. Especially when demons come looking for Marielle to trick her into coming to hell. Matters of the heart become involved and a few other angels make appearances.

Overall Vampire Mine is a good read. There is great character background that shows just how connected Marielle is to the good vampires. The ending leaves a door open for a second part, but also is an ending that brings closure if the book remains on its own. The humor in the book is great; you’ll find yourself laughing at the three step rule and misconceptions Marielle has at human life. I find myself wondering if Kerrelyn will write more novels set in the Vampire Mine world on some of the other characters who played a minor/good size role.

I put off reading this one, due to some reviews, but mostly because I was afraid it wouldn't do Connor justice. Aside from the deceiving cover art, I really enjoyed this book. Connor was awesome and I loved getting to know him and watching the internal battle in Marielle was thrilling as well. I enjoyed the honesty in their relationship and how it was intense, but felt so real.

The viewpoints trading off, made it very satisfying. And I remembered why some other authors have been bothering me. It was page turning from the beginning, and it steadily built up to the end, but it didn't feel like the sex was thrown in, instead it just fit. Every look, every touch and actual sex scenes were exquisite. They never once interfered with the plot or the stalled the action. The transition between the two were flawless.

I didn't find the book preachy, as one reviewer mentioned, but yes, the angel did tend offer pleasings and praise God frequently. She's an angel and if she really knew God as well as the book claimed, how could she not do those things. I thought the enhanced her character and made her more believable. I loved how she was so naive and young in so many ways (particularly human things) but so ancient at things like patience and love and actual humanity. Those parts were very moving. And I have to admit, I did cry a couple times during the book. This one wasn't as playful or fun as her previous books, having a much more serious undertone going on, but I think that was needed for these characters and for the series' overall plot.

I don't like that I discovered a major spoiler by reading the back of the next book, before I had started this one, but the way they got to that point completely blew me away. Even knowing it was coming, it totally took me by surprise. I knew it would happen and recognized the events setting it in motion, but it was just such a shock to get there. It almost made up for the lack of spoiler alert that I honestly believe should cover some of her descriptions.

I also liked how she tied in Marielle's three mistakes. That was an interesting angle. And honestly, I don't believe a mortal woman would have worked with Connor. I had my suspicions before, but after reading this, I'm glad the author went with an angel. I just don't see it working out that well with any other being, aside from inventing a brand new species...which still, I just can't see it. He really needed an angel. They are a perfect fit and I love that.

Ian and Angus are still my favorites, but this one was still an excellent read. Oh and it was nice to read the updates on all the other characters. I am glad I got to know them all first, otherwise, I think I would feel like I was missing out on all the side jokes. I certainly wouldn't recommend this as a stand-alone.(less)

What happens when a Scottish vampire, self-proclaimed SOB and eternal bachelor, suddenly finds an angel in his hands, someone soft, kind, loving and completely innocent. Sparks fly!

Not voluntarily, mind you, Connor doesn't want to feel, he doesn't want to be drawn to Mariella, he is - in his mind - destined to be alone and liking that just fine, thank you. But it proves to be difficult when the hurt he's suffered is being healed just by the presence of an angel.

I debated what to rate this. The fact is, I didn’t like this book at all. Not even a little bit. I’ve read the whole series and while, in general, they work for me. This one did not on any level. But I still gave it a three because the book was average. It wasn’t a horrendous mess. It was simply that I didn’t connect with it.

I actually thought, with about 100 pages to go, that I wouldn’t be able to finish it.

I often wondered just what kind of woman would be Connor Buchanan’s downfall. I never could have guessed who author Kerrelyn Sparks would have chosen! Truthfully, though it took some time for me to wrap my brain around the idea of an angel and a vampire, once I’d finished this book I knew that there was no more perfect mate for Connor.

Truthfully, though it took some time for me to wrap my brain around the idea of an angel and a vampire, once I’d finished this book I knew that there was no more perfect mate for Connor.

Connor tore my heart out in this book. He’s so sad, and carries a black cloud with him everywhere he goes. His heart is full of shame and sorrow, and he feels unworthy of everything, including love. All around him, his fellow vamps are getting married and having children, and he knows with certainty that he’ll never be in that situation.

Of course, something happens to change his mind – the fallen angel, Marielle. What an amazing mix of innocence and sensuality she was. Her despair at being cast out of heaven warred with her delight in the new body she inhabited. It could taste, touch, feel ... and she reveled in each new sensation. This included the unexpected (and somewhat unwanted) desire she feels for Connor. Ms. Sparks made each new experience of Marielle’s so clear, I felt like I was feeling those things right along with her. Her sorrow at no longer being able to commune with fellow angels, her first taste of ice cream, her first kiss. Oh, so well done. Marielle truly tugged at my heartstrings and I loved her from the start.

Of course, the path to “happy ever after” is never easy, and Connor and Marielle had their hands full. Between the evil vampire, Casmir (who’s been a recurring villain throughout the series), a demon who wants Marielle’s soul, and Marielle’s own need to return to heaven (something Connor promises to help her with), not one step is simple.

But don’t think it’s all dark. With nail polish “mishaps” and plenty of fun with “education” Marielle, there’s lightness as well.

This book was a fabulous addition to the series and really touched me on so many levels. Connor was the best tortured hero I’ve read in quite some time, and Marielle was the only woman who could be his match. I smiled, laughed, cried, ached and needed right along with them.

For one of the most emotionally satisfying books in the Love at Stake series, I highly recommend Vampire Mine. Though it won’t stand alone well, that’s okay! If you’re new to this paranormal series, just start at the beginning. Each book is a gem.

A long time ago Connor did something terrible, something he’s never forgiven himself for. When Marrielle, a beautiful Angel of Death is stripped of her wings and literally blows him off his feet, he finds himself caring for someone who has no idea how to function as a human, and whose very touch will kill one. It is his job to keep her safe and keep everyone else safe from her. The problem is, can he keep her safe from him, because he’s having some very unheavenly thoughts when he’s with her and she is desperate to be returned to heaven’s good graces.

Book ten in Kerrelyn Sparks Love at Stake series was just what the Doctor ordered for me the day it arrived. After all the tragic news this last week, I couldn’t read anything dark, I was desperate for a little love fix with a bite and this fit the bill to a T. Fans of this series have been very eager for Vampire Mine to come out, as Connor has caught many readers interest. Who can resist a gorgeous, brooding vampire who is a bad boy with a heart of gold? Connor is like the Nicholas Cage character in Moonstruck, who just needs a good woman to tell him to “Snap out of it” and to forgive himself.

Sparks did a great job of weaving in characters from past books. There are fun scenes at the cabin where some of the girls from the compound come to babysit the angel during the day. They teach her all kinds of things while Connor is dead to the world and it’s hilarious. There was also great tension and a fitting climax that led to a battle with the leader of the Malcontents, a mass murdering group of evil Vampires who are in constant battle with Connor’s group of good vampires who only drink synthetic blood and have their own priest. The scenes where the priest speaks to Marielle are so sweet and touching.

I did find a few jarring notes involving language. Connor’s favorite curse word is “Bugger” which he uses…all the time. It got to the point where I winced when I saw it, which was all too often, just because it felt over used. I also felt that the book does such a great (and unusual ) job of weaving positive spiritual elements into it, that his using Christ’s name as a curse word felt inappropriate, especially when he would use it in front of Marielle. The cover model of Connor has dark brown hair, not red, and the cover model of Marielle looks more like a stripper named Candy, than an innocent and loving angel. I felt Marielle’s lack of knowledge of human’s bodily functions and the use of modern plumbing to be unlikely when she’s lived for thousands of years. She didn’t know how to turn on a faucet but a page or two later, she knew what a GPS is.

These were frankly more editing issues for me then story/plot/pacing/ ones. Overall, I enjoyed the book a lot. It was nice to read about redemption and love on a cold winter’s night on a very sad week, where the angel of death had been working overtime in real life and a light hearted, sweet paranormal romance was just what I was looking for and what I got.

I was uncertain about this one since it included an angel. Being a religious person, I'm not typically a fan of how people portray angels coming to Earth. This was absolutely one of my favorites in the series, which totally surprised me, considering it was the one I'd dreaded reading the most. I obviously wanted to know Connor's background, but romance stories about fallen angels usually turn me off. How many times was that point shoved down our throats within the first few chapters!? UGH! I almost put the book down. Connor is is my favorite character but all of his doom and gloom was really starting to irritate me. He needed some happy slapped into him.

Luckily things picked up and got better and Connor stopped dwelling on his heart's temp.

I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars on this one. I'm giving it 4 because I needed a read like this and the timing was perfect for me. At another time, I would have given it a 3. There were some funny moments, but a lot of those funny moments might prove to be .... sacrilegious? to some people. Another winner by Kerrelyn Sparks.

I have to say I was thoroughly surprised by this book. I feared it would be too religious for my tastes or that it would undermine religion in general. I put off reading it for a while. However, it was not at all what I expected.

This is the first book of the series that I have read. How can you not fall in love with a Scottish vampire in a kilt?

I felt bits and pieces from other series I've read (and loved) throughout this book. I seem to be reading a lot of novels recently that are part of a long-standing series that I’ve never read. Happily enough, it seems to be that most of them work fairly well as standalones, despite the fact that there are obviously relationships that have been detailed in previous novels.

Overall, Vampire Mine was an enjoyable read, but it really didn’t keep my attention. Not like a few books I’ve recently read have. The first time Connor made an appearance in this series I wanted to read his story. He's a grouchy Scottish Vampire who protects everyone around him with no thought to his own needs. Ok so I like this series and had the book on pre-order eons ago, but when it came I actually read the back to see what it was about and was so sure I would hate it! I was wrong. While the plot is corny, I found it interesting to read from the point of view of a grown woman who has been alive since the third day that God was creating the universe, but is completely new to having a solid body, and feeling emotions that she had never experienced before as an angel.

O.M.G!!! A Vampire and Angel.. Oh My My.. I was completely shocked how the main story shifted. I never thought Angel could be in it But Again Kerrelyn surprised us. Connor definitely needs an angel.
