This book should really be titled "The EXPENSIVE Not So Big House".

This is not an idea book for those contemplating an inexpensive small starter home. Rather, the author advocates downsizing the square-footage of a house in order to spend more money on the details that make a home feel comfortable.

Another peeve: In recommending the perfect "not so big house", the author makes sweeping assumptions about the lifestyles of others (i.e. people rarely use a dining room, p...more

I had low expectations when I read this book and I wasn't surprised, which is too bad because I whole-heartedly agree with the philosophy. Susanka is an architect, not a writer. First of all, a physics and math person shouldn't be able to pick out grammatical errors. It's distracting and discouraging to the reader. Second of all, Susanka was extremely repetitive, making the same point over and over again. If she would've limited her use of "Not So Big" or used an acronym (NSB comes to ...more

I picked up this book expecting some interior decorating tips for small homes from the "nationally-acclaimed" author.

I would rate the book a zero based on the misleading tile, but it is is well-written and photographed. I had to put it down when I realized there's Susanka's building philosophy is quite the opposite of "not so big."

And I quote: "While you might be able to afford a 6,000 sq. ft. house, you may find that building a 3,000 sq. ft. house that fits y...more

Susanka talks about houses I would want to live in. Many houses I see are not about places to live, but are statements of power and intimidation. I don't want to live in a structure like that. Sarah Susanka urges me to work toward a smaller house that has all the space carefully chosen and planned so that it fits the way I live. Don't have formal meals? Skip the dining room. Like to read? Put the TV in a closet and make a reading space. Don't make the house larger, make it more human.

I'm a big fan of smallish, well designed houses. We have enough McMansions with one or two people knocking around inside of them. For example, in my hometown of Nashville, TN, a country music artist recently sold her 27,000 square foot log house because her children are grown and she needs to downsize. I'll say!

There is a better way to live, one that is easier on the planet and on the rest of us. Try a not-so-big house next time.

This book reaffirmed everything I learned while living in Europe - we are too attached to our square footage in the US, and it's killing our families and communities. Siblings SHOULD share rooms, families should have rooms they gather all together in instead of just passing in the halls. If we had smaller homes, maybe kids would be able to walk to school and we wouldn't be as worried about sprawl!

This is a really helpful book (mostly for those just moving in to a first home and also designing their own home). I used to think i wanted to live in a grand mansion but now i know differently.
This book has many helpful ideas for those of us living in smaller houses and smaller rooms.

This was a fascinating and life changing book for me. I read this book around the time I thought about moving and buying a bigger house. Obviously I didn't and I am very happy with that very personal decision. Try this book no matter the size of your house, you'll like it.

A really great concept and approach to the architecture of your house. It's all about doing less with more and making your house a place you love and that feels like a home. It's not all about size after all. Not in love with all the designs, but definitely worth a look.

A book that changed my life. Sarah Susanka started a movement toward higher quality/less quantity that swept me up. This book is superbly written, understandable, and makes immense sense to me. It's on my bookshelf and will probably remain there for a long, long time.

The template (conceptually) for my house remodel. While Susanka's "not so small" house is larger than any house I will ever live in, she has some supercool ideas for how to create usable, functional and eminently livable space in any domestic environment.

Gorgeous pictures of homes that are lovingly designed and neither obscenely huge nor designed for the obscenely huge. The beautiful philosophy presented by this book is that less is more, and an exquisitely designed "less" is the best of all.

I thought that this book was really interesting. It's a bit out dated, I wish that they had a newer version of it. At any rate I love the concept of living in a home just the right size for you. And making the most with the space you have!

Susanka has many great ideas for you to think about in planning your home. I've read 3 of her books, and they all basically say the same things, so I would only buy one of them. My favorite was, "Creating the Not So Big House"

an excellent architecture and design book, especially for those who want a warm comfortable home and not a mcmansion showplace. great for design ideas, and written in an easy non-technical manner.

This is the book that fortunately or unfortunately started the Not So Big cottage industry. All kidding aside, I do value her building principles.

Should be required reading for any home buyer/builder...the perfect antidote to the McMansions that seem to fill our suburbs across America.

I really love all the "no so big" books. In a time of excess it's wonderful to be reminded of how little we truly need to be comfortable.
