While I really enjoyed most of the book, the final 10% was awash in manipulative secrets masquerading as self-effacement, and I hate that shit. It's a wicked shame, as it was a fairly unique contemporary western until that point. The heroine was a genre-busting athlete and successful businesswoman who helps the rodeo champ hero reclaim his calf roping prowess. Heroine as coach? Hero willing to listen to and learn from a woman? Amazing!

This romance novel starts with a rodeo champion down on his luck because his horse, his partner, died. Ty Boudeau is blaming all his troubles on the new horse, so in a last ditch effort, he goes to a rodeo training facility to work out.
Right off the bat, their troubles start. He knows what he’s doing. He’s a star after all. He just needs her to work with the horse.
Adele Donnelly, owner of the Cowboy College, doesn’t agree, seeing deeper issues. She forces him to do things her way, all the while...more

Review: I never know what to expect with plain old romance books (as I prefer romantic suspense); sometimes they're corny or overly sappy, but sometimes they surprise me. This is one of the times I was surprised, because I wasn't actually expecting to like this one very much at all. Actually 2 1/2 stars, although up until the last sixth of the book or so, it was more like a 3 or 3 1/2 star story.
This is about Ty Boudeau, a rodeo star who's lost his edge. His sister convinces him to give Cowboy College a try. It's a roping dude ranch owned by Adele Donnelly, who's a lovely as well as talented roper, making a go of it with her grandfather on their ranch. I really enjoyed most of the book--Adele and Ty are interesting, likeable characters, and the supporting characters, includ...more

Ty lost his best horse which in turn caused him to lose the rodeo Nationals. Now, he has a new horse, but can't seem to get back into a winning rhythm. He decides to go to Cowboy College for some tips on how to get his winning streak back. Adele, who now runs Cowboy College with her grandfather, is not so sure allowing Ty to come to the college was a good idea. After all, he is a professional, not a beginner like most of the other students. When Ty asks her for a date and she says yes, but only...more
This was a very good read. The sex was minimal, which almost makes it a sweet romance. I enjoyed the secondary characters, including the grumpy grandpa. Ty was stellar as a hero, and the details about the cowboy lifestyle added a lot of depth.
I agree with most of the other readers that it fell off a bit at the end when Adele made the decision to break up with Ty and keep her pregnancy secret. I actually felt it was a bit out of character for a woman who'd been so strong, independent, and smart...more

The book starts out with much promise, as Ty and Adele have instant chemistry. Even though both have reservations about their relationship, it is obvious to the reader that the pair are good for each other, both romantically and on the ranch.
Ty is easily a rather likable guy, as he is able to humble himself enough to seek help for his career, as well as put aside his own competitiveness for the sake of the concerns of others. Adele, on the other hand, never really seems to mature beyond who is s...more

Another freebie from 'Tell Harlequin.'
It started off strong with a unique (at least for me) background - the rodeo circuit.
I liked how the hero/heroine's relationship developed, then the heroine had to get all annoying at the end.
She was presented as a strong, self-assured woman teaching -very well- aspects of a male dominated sport. Then she got wishy-washy and "self-sacrificing" at the end. And when I say self-sacrificing, I mean she decided what would be best for the hero and then flat out...more

Entertaining book. The heroine was great--completely capable but vulnerable too, because of how her parents had treated her in her childhood. I loved how she was so good at tie-down roping. The hero was sexy but teachable, and his struggling with his problems was what made him really likeable.
The book was a bit light on conflict in the middle. At the end, I completely understood her reasons why she did what she did, but I wasn't very happy about her decision.

I haven't read any other stories by Cathy McDavid, but I will certainly start lookin for them. This book was kind of different from my "usual" romances. I really liked that it took place around horses and the people that work with them and work around them. I enjoyed the story line about a rodeo roper/calf roping champion who has lost his edge and grudgingly takes his sister's advice and enrolls at Cowboy College. Here he meets the colleges owner, Adele Donnelly, along with her famous grandfathe...more

I needed some fluff to read, and this was handy. Ok storyline for a short little Harlequin romance: rodeo competitor goes to a glorified dude ranch for refresher lessons on steer roping from the woman who tuns the ranch. i actually liked the writing better than the other books that they've sent me to review. But why do so many Harlequins feature women accidentally knocked up by their new boyfriends? That strikes me as more tragic than romantic.
The overall storyline and plots that were planned out by the author was quite amazing and I really appreciate that but how she made the characters and their emotions, I found wanting. I disliked the end of the book. I found that is was dishonest, secretive and full of manipulation which I don't abide by. I would of never let anyone treat me like that. I won't read this book again and quite frankly writing this review makes me frustrated!
I'm from NYC, and enjoy cowboy and rodeo themed romances as they present places I haven't visited and events I've never participated in, firsthand. The reasons that Adele and Ty meet and interact bring strength and plausibility to their romance. The story line is a bit off toward the end but resolves well. Secondary characters are endearing, especially Pop, who has old fashioned manners and values.
I loved the book up until the last fourth of it. It just sort of fell apart for me there. It is still a good read, but the end just sort of took of in a direction that didn't hold with the rest of the book. The author was knowledgeable about the topics and the characters are very likable and you hate to see the story end, even if the last bit is a bit off pace with the rest.
I really like Cathy McDavid's books! This is two in a row that have been solid, feel good reads. I can hardly wait to get my hands on Her Cowboy's Christmas Wish in November :)

Another fairly predictable book. The only suspense was wondering how long it would take for the couple to fall into bed.
This is also a book sent to me by Harlequin to critique. It was not a book I would have chosen myself.

The ending could have used at least another 50 pages but other than that a very good story

This might be Cathy McDavid's best Harlequin American!
This was actually better than I thought it would be. I didn't expect to enjoy it but surprisingly it was good. I was sent a free review copy of this from Tell Harlequin, so needed to read it before reviewing it. I didn't like the blurb on the back of the book because anybody stuck somewhere they don't want to be, not to mention a man not wanting to be outdone and taught by a woman just didn't sound like a good mix for a romance story. However, the author managed to do it all in a such a way that...more

Miniseries: American Romance's Men of the West
"This was good insight into the world of the rodeo circuit for people like me who never have seen one. The situation between Ty and Adele was believable and the choices tough ones. I received this book from Tell Harlequin and I'm glad I did so I got a chance to read it." From a review posted by an eHarlquin.com member, to read more go here.
