Alex Bradshaw has just been sacked from Kranston Shipping Enterprises. For no good reason. Alex, forty-two and a former chief executive of the world's biggest shipping firm, and three of his friends - Jake, Cody and Phyllis - have lost not only their jobs but their retirement packages as well. Tom Portelli, Kranston's owner, is into illegal shipping of exotic animals, Krugerrand (South African gold coins) and diamonds. But Portelli doesn't know that his disgruntled former employees know of his i...more
İntikam için kötü adamlığa soyunan bir grup iyi adamla, uyum sorunu yaşayan sıradışı bir kadının, onların planına dahil olmasını anlatan eğlenceli öyküsü.

This was very different. A 37-year-old job-hopping heroine looking to bring her wacky uncle's ashes to their last resting place in the ocean outside a Caribbean island. A 42-year-old former VP looking for revenge on his old employer as well as getting his nest-egg back.
The setting is wonderful, it really made me want to go on a Caribbean vacation. The sidekicks are also unusual and interesting. It is a bit of slapstick to this comical romance, but it is done with such a deft hand that I really d...more

Cody hariç hepsi (4 kişiler) 40 yaş üstü emeklilikleri gelmiş ama çalışt...more

Making Waves was a cute, fast-paced romp. (And by romp, I meant the plot was implausible, the secondary characters were over-the-top caricatures, and much of the humor was situational.) And this was okay with me, since I knew that's what I was getting into when I picked up the book. I've been known to like many a romp before.
I can't quite pinpoint why this one didn't work for me. It might have been that the humor was a little heavy-handed at times (see: Juli's mother's jello salad). It might hav...more

When I read this book it had a slow start. There are a lot of secrets floating around in this book, but none are really big even though the build up to them implies such. Which is kinda disappointing. I was hoping for maybe some magic powers or maybe a secret cross dresser. But we get a genius and a connection to the mob.
Don't get me wrong the story is a good one. Juli is funny with her short attention spam and fear of water but yet needs to charter a boat. Juli reminded me of myself, not that I...more

In the interest of full disclosure, I'll say that I do know this author. In that "we hang out in some of the same electronic bars" kind of way.
But that's just why I picked the book up. Not why I kept reading!
Alex and his corporate cronies are fired just in time for them to be screwed out of their pensions and stock benefits. The idea of screwing over their former boss takes on a life of its own and they form a (admittedly strange) band of pirates.

This book is pure wacky fun and definitely the kind of book you should pick up if you are looking for a light-hearted book that makes you laugh and feel good.
Juli was a much more interesting character than I expected from the back of the book blurb or even from the first chapter or so. She grows on you, with her over-the-top hijinks and unbelievable family members. Really, they are unbelievable – but you want to read about them and love them for the fact that they are so zany.

It’s so nice to discover another author - and a debut author at that! - who writes humor that truly makes you laugh. It’s not easy to do. There are very few writers out there who have had success at it. Remember Tawna Fenske’s name. She’s going to become a favorite of a lot of you readers out there. If she doesn’t, you need to readjust your funny bone.

Two unexpected forces collide together in the Caribbean to create a madcap caper.
Juli possesses an usual talent, but floats from job to job, self conscious of that talent (the readers learn her talent after 100 pages into the story - the suspense of "what is her talent" kept me intrigued). Juli's recently deceased uncle (with mob connections) left instructions for her to scatter his ashes in the Caribbean. Since she is "in between jobs", Juli accepts the task as a means to "jump start" her life....more

Juli Flynn has a high IQ and has held forty-two different jobs in the last ten years, everything from selling fireworks to forest fire scout. She is also lonely and has trouble fitting in. When her Uncle Frank died, his last wish was for her to scatter his ashes over the Carribean Sea, specifically on a bay near St. Johns. The problem is Juli is deathly afraid of the ocean. Before her departure on the cruise, she takes some se...more

4 ½ stars. The first half is lots of laughing for me (which is rare). The second half is a light pleasant read.
REVIEWER’S OPINION:
During the first 150 pages I was laughing/chuckling a lot. At one time I almost wondered if I was drinking and didn’t know it because I was laughing so much and feeling giddy. Too many contemporary romance books that claim to be funny don’t make me laugh. This book did! It’s silly funny little things as this group of people are interacting and deciding what to do.

I'd never heard of this book or author... but I think Shannon Stacey posted about it (must've been on FB), so I bought it the other day.
From the first page, it was silly and lighthearted, and I almost thought there was TOO much comedy going on. I really almost put it down after the first few pages, but I was too lazy to find something else to read, so I kept reading. And I'm really glad I stuck with it. FULL DISCLOSURE: I don't know the author of Making Waves personally, but I enjoy reading her blog and have in fact appeared on it bare-chested. So this is not a 100% uninfluenced review.
That said, it's hard not to come away from Making Waves with a smile on your face. It's written in short, funny sentences that drop a quirky non-sequiter every few lines. If you're willing to swallow the absurd premise and slightly overqualified-for-everything lovers/protagonists in the interest of having fun yo...more

What a hoot! That's what I have to say first. Pirates, an urn filled with ashes, a woman with a high IQ without any common sense, it was hilarious. When I first started this book Juli was a puzzle to me. In fact, she is a puzzle for the first half of the book. There is something different about her. You aren't sure if she just has a severe case of ADHD or what. She bounces from job to job, trying them all. She gets bored, very easy. Her common sense seems to be out the window and as a reader you...more
A charming debut filled with well drawn characters an interesting, nicely paced plot and witty, realistic dialogue, this is not your usual romance novel. It's a romantic comedy and the sexual tension is at its best but the raunchy sex scenes are tasteful and limited. If that kind of thing deters you from romance novels or love stories, give this a try. In fact, the sex scenes were well handled, if only my mother hadn't kept calling every time I read one (there are only a couple), I'd have enjoye...more
When I first learned about Making Waves, the debut novel by author Tawna Fenske, I had high hopes that she might be a new contemporary author that I would love. The cover quote on the front of Making Waves describes it as “Hilarious! A wild, sexy romp with a fresh, fun take on love.” Hence my problem with cover quotes. I know that they are promotional, and therefore exaggerations and sometimes not exactly revealing or truthful and the story contained within the pages. And to be honest, the cover...more
I've been anticipating this book ever since I read the excerpt on the author's website. Add to that many well-written, hilarious blog posts and I was REALLY anticipating this book. Then it released early to every freaking book store and walmart in the country, except mine. For almost two weeks I had to listen to every one rave and rave and rave, and I thought I was going to turn permanently green if I didn't get my hands on a copy of Making Waves. Well, I GOT IT. In more ways than one.

Tawna Fenske's debut romance,
Making Waves
, requires a suspension of disbelief. Water-fearing thirty-something Juli Flynn is tasked with taking her late uncle-mobster's ashes out to a tropical sea locale for distribution after his death. While waiting for her ship to depart, she runs into unemployed shipping executive Alex Bradshaw, who has concocted a scheme with some of his former co-workers to get some of their stolen retirement savings back. In a series of madcap (and extremely unlikely) ev...more
Making Waves is a fun little caper involving Juli, the conventional woman trying to find herself, who's thrown on a boat with disenfranchised corporate worker bees turned pirates. Yup, pirates! Alex and three of his coworkers decide to take control of their future after a lay-off which drained their pensions after years of service to a company who couldn't care less. They charter a boat and plan to exploit their employer, a shipping merchant, by stealing valuable material in a heist to make up f...more
Well, I must say up front that I have never been a romance genre fan. EVER.
I have always thought the men on the covers were cheesy. The women were damsels in distress. The sex was always.....cheap and unrealistic. Must I go on?
So, why do you ask, did I read this one? Well, I stumbled across the author, Tawna Fenske, on a great blog called the Debutante Ball. Immediately, I thought she was hysterical. So I started subscribing to her blogs. You should too! She is great.

Sometimes there's nothing better than a fun, thriller to take your mind off of things. Making Waves had all the components of a fun get away, complete with crime, mystery, romance, and plenty of humor. Honestly, there's nothing that serious in the story that you can't sit back and enjoy the ride. Alex is the hot protagonist in the story who needs to get even with a crooked boss. He's thrown caution to the wind and has partnered up with all of his closest coworkers/friends to get the job done. In...more
Hilarious, sweet, and crazy. That's how I'd describe MAKING WAVES by Tawna Fenske. I was standing in the Romance isle of Barnes and Noble and I saw this book on the shelf. I picked it up and read the back.
I thought to myself, "Pirates. Hmmm, I wonder how that works in a contemporary novel." So I bought purely to see how she did it. I was not disappointed. NOT AT ALL. From almost the first page I was laughing. And not a quiet chuckle, but a laugh out loud laugh.

Picked this up as a "Blind Date" book from the public library. The description on the gift wrap said "Local Author Romance" and indeed - the author is someone we've seen at book reading events in the area.

Look, if you tell anyone I read a romance novel, and maybe even enjoyed it, I'll have to hunt you down and beat you with a side of beef. But if you promise not to spread salacious rumors about my reading habits, I'll be happy to tell you how much fun I had breezing through Tawna's debut novel.
And it really is a breezy, little read--full of ludicrous action, quirky characters, and enough sexual tension to choke Don Juan. Sure, it gets a little silly in parts, but that's half the fun. And boy, doe...more
