I really loved this book. How could you not like a book that tells you in the title to not open it? That's what books are for right? This book is about a pig who is trying to write the book we are trying to read. He starts out by asking the reader "who do you think you are, didn’t you read the cover". From there the story is funny. He tries to get you to stop reading by telling you the words will fly away by turning the pages, and also by "placing" a big rock on one of the pages. The best part o...more

What really caught my eye about this book was the cover, I honestly chose this book to read because the cover said not to open it. With the big bright letters that are telling you this, any child will be interested right away. As you open the book you find a silly cartoon pig. As you flip through the pages the frustrated bothered pig tells the readers to get lost and to stop bothering him but of course we continue to flip through the pages. He finally gets so frustrated that he nails words to a...more

Do Not open this Book! Was a playful and fairly ironic book. I enjoyed reading it. The cover has bold red words on it, which are so inviting to a young child, especially when the title adds an element of trespassing or bad behavior to it. I think some of the appeal of this book is that the reader is not supposed to be reading it, but we are anyway. The illustrations are fun and playful. They go along perfectly with the story as well. The pictures are not enclosed in a boarder, so each page is as...more

Right away the humor starts with the jacket flaps where the pig told us again not to open the book. The dedication page shows the pig making commas in his workshop and there are boxes of words stacked up everywhere. The book is about a pig trying to create a story, but the reader keeps interrupting his story and argues by saying “do not turn the page” and “go away.” As you read, it feels like you are having a conversation with the pig because he looks at the reader. It made me keep reading becau...more

Do Not Open This Book by Michaela Muntean, is a book similar to many other books I have read through out my life. There is one significant difference the story that lies beneath the cover is about the book not being completed. The reason the cover says do not open, is because the story inside is not yet finished. Through out the entire book we listening to the main character going on and on about how we should not have opened the book, and why it is not done. I thought this was a really cute tak...more

I never actually opened up this book because it told me not too.... but i'm only kidding. The book title, Do not Open This book made me want to open it even more which is probably the purpose of writing this book. The bright red coloring in the words on the title creates a sense of alertness. the end pages are kind of plain which leads into the fact that this book isn't finished yet, essentially. The font is fun and in speech bubble format which is playful and different. The illustrations are ve...more

I was surprised I could find a story about someone trying to write a story entertaining. One of the illustrations I found to be most interesting was an image that said "very heavy rock" that was put on the page to attempt the reader from turning the page. The next page pictured an illustration of the "very heavy rock" that had fallen to the ground, followed by the question, "Oh, you are very strong do you work out at the gym?" Much of this book was filled with random attempts to get the reader t...more

Reminiscent of The Monster at the End of this Book. Ruder though, and not as funny. And one part is a pretty blatant rip-off: the pig (?) moves a big heavy rock onto the page so the reader can't turn it (sound familiar, but with stacked bricks, perhaps?). When you--the reader--proceed to turn the page anyway, the pig (?) announces that you are very strong. My kiddos got a kick out of the little character's frustration, but for me the attempt at humor through the pig's dismay doesn't make up for...more

Ok, I admit it. I only read this book because the title told me not to. You know, you tell me not to push the red button and I automatically want to push the red button.
But seriously, you might as well do what the title says. Although the concept is fantastic, with the book interacting directly with the reader, so that the reader is the antagonist of the story, the book itself is a waste of time. The illustrations are ugly and the protagonist is irritating. Young readers will probably think it's...more

Wait one second please...*ROTFLOL, series of giggle fits---gets up, fixes clothes and clears throat* Ahem. Okay, all set. This book was not at all good, the pig was annoying and pesky and totally not funny......darn. I just can't seem to lie today.

Here is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth:::
THIS BOOK IS FABULOUSLY HILARIOUS!!!! I love a good comedy, especially when it involves words and writing. That pig is so darn cute!! I just want to hug him for being such an awesome book...more

"Do Not Open This Book" really has no reasoning or purpose behind it. Words are all jumbled throughout the pages which can be very confusing and overwhelming to the reader. Many times I found myself not sure where to read on next and if I was going in the order. On the plus side, I did find the colors to be very inviting and bright. Pascal Lemaitre did a good job using colors that were very eye-catching to the reader. At times I did find the illustrations to be very random and out of the ordinar...more

Michaela Muntean, created a must read with this book. Not only does she make us want to read it by exploiting our human stuborness and curiosity through the title which clearly states we should NOT open the book but she also uses very engaching fonts and colors that attract the readers' eye back to the page again and again. This story also gives the impression of the reader actively participating and contributing to the ultimate creation of this book. The style both literary and artistically are...more

Do yourselves a favor, HEED THE TITLE.

Wow, could someone give this author some Zoloft? Prozac? A trip to the strip club? ANYthing to make her just a LITTLE more positive.

I understand the intention of this book, but the author took the negative attitude too far, and it just left me feeling that the character of the book was a trite little A-hole who, like most children today, could use a swift kick in the ass.

Also, it felt like the author read "The Monster At The End of This Book" by Grover, pick...more

The cover of this book is so eye catching. The use of the primary colors red and yellow combined with the big, bold child-like font immediately draws you in to the book. Then, once you read the title you are intrigued to read the book since the title is telling you not to open the book. Throughout the entire book the little pig is trying to get you to stop reading but you just want to keep turning the page. Just like many other postmodern books, this one had no real purpose but was very enjoyabl...more

As humans being told not to do something automatically intrigues us to do it and that is why Michaela Muntean is a genius! She tapped into the human brain and used a little reverse psychology to get us to read this silly and fun story. My favorite part was on the first page where it reads, "who do you think you are, didn’t you read the cover". That really set the mood for the book. I would recommend this story to an old enough reader who would be able to detect the wit and the postmodern theme o...more

I could not stop laughing at this book. The little pig was so upset that I kept changing the pages to his unfinished book. I would pay attention to the children I would allow to read it because the pig gets a little bit insulting at the end and maybe some kids would feel bad, while others would understand the humor of it and laugh. I thought it was pretty clever how they involve the reader in the story by having the pig leave blanks in his story to allow the readers to put there names in the sto...more

My kids seem to have inherited my love of metafiction. After enjoying The Book That Eats People we checked out Do Not Open This Book! by Michaela Muntean.

What do you do with a title like that? Of course, you do exactly the opposite. You open it right up. Inside the book is a harried pig who is trying to finish the book before you read it. Every page turned is another moment of frustration for him.

In the middle of the book there's a funny mad lib style story where you're supposed to substitute in...more

I thought this book would be pretty awesome because it reminded me of Grover's The Monster at the End of this Book which was one of my favorite books when I was little. It really isn't anything like that... in fact, the piggy is pretty mean. But despite that, I can see why kids would like this book and it had its moments. But it isn't as great as Grover's ;-)
Melissa Gordon
This book is definitely a fun read! I love that it talks about how the pig is writing the book as you are reading it, that would be really fun for kids to experience. This book is interactive and would be fun for students to read by themselves, and for teachers to read aloud. I think it's more of a silly book than a book about a certain moral, which is still really great! It also has good vocabulary words such as "ferocious".

This book uses a bright color scheme with comic-like typeface as the pig writing the story attempts to keep the reader from continuing the "unfinished" story. It uses a white background with borderless images to represent the fact that the book is indeed "under construction". From the very beginning of the actual story, the reader is addressed as part of the story, and is involved throughout the whole thing.

Do Not Open This Book is a fun a entertaining book for multiple ages. I even enjoyed reading it myself. Many children will be attracted by the title even those who can not read will be attracted because the letters are so big and appealing. The story is funny as well it will keep children wanting to continue to turn the page to see what else the main character is saying about his words and story.
Rebecca
The illustrations in this book are done with pen and ink, and colored in adobe photoshop. All of the text was hand lettered by the artist. Knowing that at the beginning of the book makes all of the pictures more impressive. So many pages have a jumble of objects, words, and characters. The story line is about writing a story, and how you the reader are making it hard for the author to write.
Chelsea Cloonan
This book makes you want to open it, simply because it says not to. This appeals to most children, who like to do things that they are told not to do. In this book, the author, is trying to write a book, while the reader is reading. On some of the pages, the sentences are even going opposite of the normal way, making it fun to decipher, and it breaks the traditional rules of reading.
Becca
If you are teaching about word usage and genres, grammar, quotations, etc. this is a great book to share. It has many word bubbles, which children love, and the little pig-guy is quite funny. There are sight words to point out and helpful hints on writing a specific genre or story. It makes you want to read further the more the little guy is telling you not to turn the page. Cute read.
Anykidcanwrite
The pig in charge of this book doesn’t want any readers in his book because it isn’t done yet. Follow this cranky narrator as his book comes together from a mess of words and ideas. Be careful turning the pages as the pig will try to stop you from reading on again and again.

Your Turn to Write: Create a Mad Libs story and have your friends fill in the missing words.

The reader interacts with the writer in this book about a pig who is trying to write but who keeps getting interrupted by the reader. This reminds me of the pigs in Bruce Whatley's Wait! No Paint!. It gives readers an insight into how a book is written, but it lacked something--can't put my finger on what. I also didn't care for Lemaitre's illustrations. Kids may enjoy it because of it's unique viewpoint.

Big Hit with a range of grades. Ties in with writer's workshop theme. Lots of opportunity for interactive discussions. For example I have the students predict what words might escape when the box labelled 'dangerous words' is tipped over. (some answers from this years' groups: 'shark', 'dark', 'piranha', 'fire', 'tornado')

A pig, who dresses like an elf, is writing this book as we are reading it. He continues to insist that we not turn the page. The pictures vary widely from extra words all over the page to fill in the blank CLOZE passages. It is a fun journey.

This would be a great companion book for An Undone Fairy Tale by Lendler.

Rated and reviewed by Dylan, age 7:

Do not open this review!! This book is about a pig who doesn't want us around because he's concentrating making a book. My favorite part was when the big gigantic mouse came because it was scary and fun. The part with the rock was very funny because he said oh you are very strong. Do you work at the gym?
