Take those three stars advisedly. It doesn't mean I particularly liked it. It means I couldn't make myself stop reading it, not in a good way, necessarily, but it wasn't bad either. It was more like watching a bad car accident and having to be sure no one was seriously injured.
When I started this book, I thought it was written like one of Updike's Rabbit books. Then I started thinking it was like Carl Hiassen, without weedwhackers. Shortly after that, I started thinking,

I read this book based on a review I saw in Booklist over the summer. Based on that, I was expecting something....lighter? More comical? Shorter? Because I did not find it to be "a hilarious satire featuring the rag-tag employees of Dollarapalooza vs. the evil corporate Wow-Mart" (from the back cover). It seemed more of a rambling character study peppered with potentially offensive stereotypes. I found myself skimming - 3 pages describing the inventory and floor plan of a discount store?
