If you've read the first two books (which you probably have if you're reading this...if anybody is indeed reading this!..and if not, you should!) you know that Samantha Moon's life isn't easy. Being a creature of the night and trying to keep some semblance of normalcy in regards to your kids and all the other people who don't know your secret hasn't been an easy task for Samantha; mother of two, ex wife, private detective and ex federal agent...

The writing gets increasingly better but again, the length hurts the story. I also didn't like who Fang ended up being and I was disappointed that more time wasn't spent on her family, especially given the circumstances.
Also, there is a lot of judgement passed on woman in these books. Sam is always using perjorative terms like "slut" or "whore". I mean, I understand why she might've used those terms toward the homewrecker but to pass judgement on everyone is sort of annoying.

American Vampire starts with Sam learning the identity of Fang, her on-line best friend, advisor and sanity-saver of the last six years. No spoilers here, though! Read it yourself! Anyhoo, after that little shocker the story is off and running as Sam receives a horrifying phone call from a little girl who has seen her mother murdered and is in the hands of an evil man. At the same time her son becomes gravely ill, and Sam, with her psychic vampire abilities, realizes he is dying. Unwilling to gi...more
third in the series. She finally meets Fang, but to me it was sort of a bust. The story line is there but sort of boring or weird, but since he's sort of a stalker I guess that could be part of the reason. Who it is was a surprise, and maybe more comes from it in a later book. Her case in this book is so sad. A little girl has called her & needs her help. What a ending to the case. I liked the new people that she worked with on this case. It was a surprise about Hanner, but she's barely in a...more
I have really enjoyed the entire Vampire for Hire series thus far. J.R. Rain has done a really great job depicting a mother who happens to be a vampire. I like how the character goes through the emotional changes of her divorce, the heartache of a cheating spouse and her desire to be a good mommy to her kids. I really really like this series.

Enjoyed this latest installment, but there were several annoyances for me. First, come on already and let Sam get some action already! Meaning love-life wise. It seems as though in each book, we get a very small taste of what MIGHT happen, but it fizzles out and nothing comes of it.
Additionally, there are many awkward transitions from serious scenes in the book, to the next scene. The most annoying one for me is when "Fang" essentially professes his love for her, and speaks of spending eternity...more

"American Vampire" is another great read from J.R.Rain. In this installment Samantha or Sam is working at home when she receives a telephone call from an unidentified number. When she finally answers, there is a small little girl on the other end of the line who indicates that her mother had been "kilt." She was alone, scared being abused by her captors. Of course, Sam springs into action enlisting the aid her ever growing list of friends.

The 3rd installment of the Vampire For Hire series was again another good book.
Samantha is really embracing her vampire bat. She is also becoming more aware of her psychic abilities & what they can tell her. She discovers that she can see ghosts & we also get to see her talking about aura which the author touched on briefly before.
Now that Samantha has taken back her kids & her house from her mean ex-husband Danny she thinks life will be great. Yeah right. Sam ge...more

The third book in the Samantha Moon series is full of the same action and intrigue that I’ve grown to love about the series; however, I found this one much less satisfying. It just seemed to open up more questions than it answered. Am I getting sucked into another Lost (yes, I am referring to the infamous JJ Abrams series)?
Maybe it has been this way all along and I am just starting to get fed up with it. In previous books most of her personal dilemmas came to transition point (hence a good stopp...more

Rain juggles emotions in book 3 of the Samantha Moon series, American Vampire.
Some kick-ass, LOL, cry your eyes out moments and a few OMG surprises.
Relationships go wacky.
Business is good—painful, but good.
Sam's X is up to his usual crap.
And just when Sam (and the reader) thinks things are beginning to head in the right direction, a tragedy, rocks Moon's world, leaving her with a decision—a decision that ends the book with a hook so big you just have to move on to Moon Child. The title adds to t...more

This series is out/coming out in sets. While the writer is not really exceptional, I have to admit, I kept reading to find out what happens next. I wouldn't pay full price for the books, but the 3 or 4 dollars the books are priced at is reasonable for the quality. I enjoyed the story lines and plot twists for each of the first 3 books (this is book 3) and each book ends at a cliffhanger just tantalizing enough to make you growl and debate how much you want to know what happens next. I'll admit I...more
I'm loving this series! Nice and easy to read, but still loads going on. This time Samantha Moon gets a strange phone call from a little 5 year old in desperate need of help. Sam sets out to find her which she does with the help of a few other private detetives, one of whom is quite a famous character himself.

I love this series but is it shorter than the previous two? I love Sam because she is not your typical vampire but she is a mom balancing taking care of her kids, an ex (ambulance chaser lawyer who basically made her life hell in the previous two books) who suddenly appears to be a little bit more friendlier, her possible interest in Fang, her on-line pal that she finally meets in person (kinda creepy) and Kingsley, the client she met in the first book who is also a lawyer (kinda sleazy) and at...more
American Vampire (Vampire for Hire #3) finds the drama ratchet up. Her son is sick, possible dying. She found out who Fang is. She learned that there’s more to the light that she can see. Oh, she has to find a missing little girl.
J.R. Rain found his stride in this novel. Samantha “Sam” Moon’s life continues to get complicated but in this novel she handles it better than the previous two. She discovers so much about herself and still after six years of being a vampire she is clueless.

The third book in the American Vampire Series was really good! I've really enjoyed seeing Samantha change and grow throughout this series. Her supernatural abilities have grown so much since the first book and it's been very interesting to see where it's leading her.
In this book we finally get to see who Fang is, although I'm still not sure what to think of him. I don't know where things are going to go with the two of them. Her relationship with both Fang and Kingsley is a little murky and it...more

In American Vampire we finally find out Fang's identity. Sam is taking her life, home, and children back, and thankfully that has reduced Danny to a sniveling idiot. Now with Fang in the picture, Sam has two possible love interests. How could you have a paranormal novel without competition? I don't want to give away too much, but enough that reviewing American Vampire doesn't waste our time. The biggest case Sam is working on involves a missing mother and daughter. Personal tragedy strikes close...more
So far, this is my absolute favorite in the Vampire for Hire series. Obviously the books are well written and plotted, or I wouldn't keep plowing through them. But there are a few things about this book that raised the bar up a few notches for me.
First, the little girl on the other end of the phone line, and Sam's subsequent search for a tiny needle in a haystack. These bits gave me chills, goosebumps, a few lump-in-my-throat moments and what not. Although I've like the main character Samantha...more

This instalment wasn't as gripping as the last one. The ending was meant to be a cliff hanger but you could tell what she was going to do.... What any mother would do and the name of the next book kinda gives it a away. You can tell the author is a man even though the Narrater is a woman. She at times isn't quite believable, she is attracted to every man she meets and says a lot of things that you could imagine a man saying or thinking but nota woman. But the author is a man so I don't blame him...more
I really enjoy the Samantha Moon - Vampire for Hire Series.
In this installment, Samantha is coming to terms with her emerging powers (That she's only JUST beginning to realize she has), and attempts to use them for what she does best...solving 'unsolvable' cases.
Startling discoveries are made that not only shock and delight her, but bring home an astonishing truth. The supernatural world she is now part of is bigger than she thought...and she's still new!

I enjoyed this one almost as much as the first two, however it was a little darker with less dry humor. It still kept me turning the page. I would like to see Sam become a little more intimate with someone. I do have to remember this story is written by a man and thus Sam approaches feelings, seems to me, a little more from the detached point of view. Maybe this is as good as we get. (I clearly have been reading too much Christine Feehan....naaa that can never be too much.) Anywho, it was still...more
The story really was a 4 but the cliffhanging stuff is getting old! I would be really pissed if I had to wait a year before the next story came out.
I realize that these books are really cheap but the story is only 80% of the kindle download. The rest are introductions to other stories. The writer could have combined two of his last stories into one book and charged twice as much and I wouldn't be complaining, but to end the book in the middle of the storyline was just so disappointing. OK so I found out who Fang is and maybe one day I'll re-read book 2 to pick up on the nuances and clues. This book had a lot going once again. I know that Knighthorse, Spinoza, and Aaron King are characters from J.R. Rain's other books but the inclusion of an Elvis character just had me rolling my eyes. And thinking that this is a Charlaine Harris ripoff. I didn't enjoy this book as much as the last one. I understand Sam's pain and not wanting her son to die but I hope she doesn't try to make hi...more
American Vampire is the third book in the Vampire for Hire series. Samantha Moon starts receiving phone calls from a small child begging for help. It is a race to see if Samantha can save the little girl before she is killed.
Samantha has started to demonstrate more paranormal skills. She just wants to be a good mother to her children, have someone love her and keep her business running so she can support herself and her two kids.

It's simply not a whole book, it's half of one.
The book has 3-4 parallel plots (Sam's work, her family and Fang), of which 2 are basically used to lengthen the rest while not moving anywhere themselves. That just leaves the reader unsatisfied and annoyed.
Although I can see that it's part of a series and questions are supposed to be left unanswered, this was a bit too much for my liking. The ending seems rushed to make the next book in the series possible and some (admittedly minor) questions tha...more

What would you do for your child? That's the question I kept asking myself after reading this book...if I was a vampire would I want my child to become what I am? I couldn't imageing making child frozen in time as a youth...it would break my heart...then again could I really let my child die? I'm really loving this series...and this is probably the first time after reading a vampire series that it makes you think about how far you would go, in real life, to protect the ones you love. Good writing and good story, but how can Sam forgive Fang his background issues and not forgive Kingsley for doing a legitimate job? Definitely do NOT understand that. Don't understand her even considering Fang--he's a freaking psycho stalker for god's sake.
With the main plot, there is a horrifying twist that really shocked me to the core. With the personal side plot, well, let's just say it's a very difficult read. Can't quite believe the ass of an ex is suddenly decent to her; that's either g...more

c2011. So! Having enjoyed the first two books, I have to admit that I was really disappointed with this one and I had paid for this Kindle editition! First of all the writing style seemed a little "sloppier" than with the first 2 books. I also did not like the little boy being in danger all through out the book....I normally steer clear of anything that profits from hurt to children and I did not see this plot line coming at all. And...I did not like who Fang turned out to be..I knew who it wasn...more
