At first, I wasn't sure I was going to like this book. I'm about as far from a chef as you can get, and I'm not the type to pick up any book that talks about chefs, kitchens, drug use, culinary school or the mob... all of which were contained in this book. At first, I also couldn't understand what it was about this book that would make it be geared toward Christian non-fiction readers. Now that I've finished the book, I'm glad I didn't give up on it... it was worth the read.

This is a very fascinating book! Having a window into what it's like in the high-end restaurant world is very eye opening. I have great respect and admiration for the world renowned chefs out there, but now I understand what it really takes for them to get where they are and I respect them even more! This man in particular, Rick Tramonto, had to over come unbelievable odds to achieve his dream. He is a ridiculously determined person. He's one of those people that whatever he decides to do, he do...more
Had this book again, not been on the Tyndale House summer reading program, I never would have read this book. I am not a true "foodie" and in fact, admit that I have never even heard of this chef, that has won numerous awards for being amongst the greats like Emeril and Wolfgang Puck. Now that I know of him, his great testimony of God's love and redemption, I will google him and see if I can one day go to one of his many establishments. I liked how there are recipes in this book, but have to adm...more
I will admit, I do not know my celebrity chefs as well as I should (being a baking blog and all), so I started reading this without knowing who Rick Tramonto is (please don't give me that look). I honestly did not know which famous restaurants he worked at or any honours he had been awarded. I went in thinking it would be a memoir about a chef rising to the top - which it was, but far more interesting when the restaurant names started to sound familiar.

I thought this book was a story about being a chef. Instead it was about becoming a "born again" Christian. I can certainly see why Gail gave up on Tramonto. I felt the same. And he really never explains how he supposedly overcame his anger management issues. They just disappear. And that was before his conversion. And he just drops Trio. What happened? Is he still involved? Is it even still open? i think not. A good indication of his life, I think. He just flits from commitment to commitment.
Great story! Loved reading Rick's personal history of how he came to be, and how he and Gale built their empire, the ups and downs, his family life and how that influenced his style, and some of the great recipes "sprinkled" throughout the book. I also enjoyed the discussion of his spiritual journey and how turning to God made everything in his life make more sense. Very inspirational and interesting reading.
I'm a fan of chef autiobiographies, and I read as many as possible. Tramonto has a great story of inspiration and triumph over family problems, dsylexia, and drug use. His story in entertaining and engaging, very personal and sincere-sounding. The recipes in each chapter sound amazing. The big blast of "God is the answer" at the end will be off-putting for some.
Rick Tramonto has had an exciting life. His journey is inspiring and fun to read. The book has lots of recipes, too.
