Olivia's Birds: Saving the Gulf
One 11 year-old girl can make a difference-as budding ornithologist and artist Olivia Bouler has proven, single-handedly raising over $175,000 for the Gulf Coast oil spill recovery. Devastated by the disaster and eager to do her part, Olivia wrote a letter to Audubon, “11 years old and willing to help” offering her own bird paintings to raise contributions for Gulf recover...more

Recommends it for:
everyone who wants to make a difference; bird lovers; environmentalists; all kids
It’s extremely rare that I feel horribly guilty for borrowing rather than buying a book. I have extremely limited disposable income so I do borrow most of my books. This one I might have to buy.
I love kids, and this eleven-year-old author is incredibly impressive. She’s a fine artist and writer, but most importantly she cares. She cares about birds and the environment, and she is creative enough to use her talents to make a difference, a huge difference, both directly and by inspiring other kids...more

This is an inspiring story of the efforts one little girl took to help birds after the massive oil spill in the Gulf in April 2010. The pictures she drew are terrific and the information about each bird is interesting. The book itself is less of a story than a description of different kinds of birds, followed by a plea for those who are endangered. At the end is a description of the steps that Olivia took in order to help make a difference and contribute to the fundraising efforts to help allevi...more
11-year-old Olivia Bouler may someday become the twenty-first century’s John James Audubon – the illustrating birds part, not the shooting them for taxidermy part.
Youngsters will be inspired by Bouler’s knowledge of, and deep-seated concern for, birds of all types. She fills the book with her surprisingly good illustrations of feathered creatures ranging from pelicans to kiwis. She also includes humane education material—she took it upon herself to raise funds to rescue the birds affected by th...more

Two things:
1. This book is an incredible testimony to what can be done if one wants to make a difference in the world - no matter one's age.
2. My son got to hear Olivia speak at his elementary school today and he was absolutely taken with her. His face lit up when I asked him about the visit and he told me about how she taught them all how to draw a woodpecker, about what she saw that led her to create the book. He decided that he wants to draw and write so that he can do something important too...more

Written by an eleven year old, Olivia Bouler, who is passionate about making a difference in the world. When Olivia heard about the Gulf Oil Spill and its impact on the birds, she raised over $150,000 to help clean up the gulf through the sale of her paintings. This book, contains bird facts and information about what kids can do to protect wildlife and the environment. Olivia is a very determined young woman. Her story will appeal to kids who what to make a difference and to kids who want to re...more
Written by 11 year old Olivia Bouler this is a nice bird book. Interesting facts woven in with her illustrations make this highly readable. I think some kids may be inspired by Olivia and all that she has done. After the oil spill in the Gulf on Mexico in 2010, she wrote a letter to ask how she could help. People donated money and in return got a painting of a bird done by Olivia. She has raised more than 150,000. Kids like to read about kids who DO something.
Written and illustrated by an 11 yr old this book has an engaging conversational tone of one enthusiast speaking to another about her passion. I may have wanted to see more photos of birds, cause I like pictures, but the drawings were charming. I found the story to be very nice, though I think that sometimes these types of stories can be intimidating or frustrating for kids, who may try to help the environment and not be wildly successful.
Written and illustrated by an eleven year old girl. Pretty remarkable! I admire her dedication and her desire to help...and not just desire. She took action and raised a great deal of money to help the birds hurt by the oil spill in the gulf. Lots of great info about birds! I plan to share this with my second grade class. Look what kids can accomplish! Wow!
A sweet, heart-warming picture book by 11 year old Olivia. The best part of the book for me are the drawings. Olivia is the next Audubon in the making. Her loves of birds is obvious and a bit contagious.
I would have liked for the book to explore more on her efforts to save Gulf birds. Still this is a book to be applauded!
Well done Olivia.

Well done Olivia.
A girl that draws pictures of birds and then sells them to raise money for her Save the Gulf campaign. I feel like a bad person for not giving her 5 stars. This book would be a great addition to school libraries. I cannot think of a better way to show young people how they can make a difference. Girl can flat our draw!
It's amazing what one determined kid can do.
So refreshing to find the voice and the illustrations so clearly Olivia's own, and her initial contribution (sending illustrations to donors) within any 10 year old's grasp. Since then, she's had a more unique role (speaking at TEDx, writing a picture book) but the way she got started was with a single letter to Audubon. Great example of how to take that first step.
Good book. I added this to my library. Shows what one person can do if they make the effort. Spotlights the importance of our need to protect animals and the environment.
Incredible story of what one girl has done to save the animals in the Gulf coast oil spill.
