This somewhat turgid volume traces militarism throughout history with an understandably detailed treatment beginning from the period of the French revolution and Napoleanic wars to the rise of the Third Reich. While covering much specific ground treated better elsewhere the comprehensive historical approach and lengthy digressions into the significance of conscription, industrialisation and the influence of their general staffs on the political fortunes of the Great Powers is very satisfying.
interesting, dense. draws a distinction between ostentatious militarism and proper military tradition/military ethos. fascists have the former whereas democracies tend to have the latter. the two items are in inverse proportion--more showy bullshit means that one is less likely to have a proper military ethos, &c.
