Can I start by saying I LOVED this book! I'm usually quite a slow reader, but I finished this in a day. I never once put it down and said, "This is boring," or "I don't want to finish this shit," like I do with so many books.

I'll start with Alex. He's a talented fighter. Cage fighter to be exact. His uncle trained him up and he's deadly in the cage. He has trouble in school and at home. In school everyone thinks he's a psycho, at home, his father seemes to hate him and this mothers an alcoholic....more

I decided to read this book because my brother did not want me to read it.( You know how you want to do things that told not to do)

I was wondering at then why he did not want me to read it.

And i figured out why it was because some bits were violence.

However i read it and i quite enjoied it! (yay! that's good thing) But i dont recommend to girls
it's more like boys' book.

the book, clash tought me the how each act and words i am saying is important.

Because Alex's dad is not-clean-hand and Alex...more

It's not often that a book is so compelling that I literally can't put it down. Very few 'get' to me emotionally. This debut novel by Colin Mulhern managed to do both. I bought it as Colin's next novel Arabesque is due out in September and I wanted to see if I should add this to my library. After Clash, there is no doubt I shall be pre-ordering Arabesque.
Clash is firmly aimed at the young adult market, but offers a depth of characterisation that will appeal to the adult reader. It offers a griml...more

Clash follows the story of two very teenager different boys, Alex the cage fighter and Kyle the artist both both attend the same school. Each chapter alternates between each boy's story which interwave with each other as their story progresses.

I wasn't too sure what I'd make of this book. The main character takes part in illegal cage fighting and I thought it might not be all that intelligent and just violent for the sake of it but it certainly wasn't. The best thing about it was getting underne...more

I started reading this book because it was the best of a bad bunch when I was on the train home from a conference. I got a heap of freebie books and this was one of them. It didn't look like the sort of thing I would normally choose to read but I loved it. It's gritty and gripping and I couldn't put it down. The subject matter can be a bit uncomfortable but it's always good to see an author of books aimed at young adults tackling difficult topics. There were so many twists and turns. The ending...more

When I was asked to read CLASH, I was in two minds about it for quite sometime. It didn’t feel like something I would read (very much out of my comfort zone of reading!), but then, I saw reviews and was torn. I decided to read it after suggesting to the publisher's PR (a lovely lady called Liz) that I would give the book away. My reasoning: if I am giving a book away, I want to know it's good. I don't want to give a book away that I felt was bad. (Wanna win a copy? Visit my blog tomorrow as part...more

May 11, 2011 Aly (Fantasy4eva) rated it 4 of 5 stars Recommends it for: Those who are willing to take on something a little different and on the gritty side.
Clash took me roughly three hours to read which isn’t bad at all. I have to say that there was never a dull moment and it never lagged. I love when this happens because it makes the whole reading experience all the more smoother. I had heard briefly of the book prior to reading it, but after reading the synopsis I was interested right away.

When I started the book I was a little unsure. The boys were practically children yet the synopsis promised something on the heavy side. How much could a chil...more

Alex Crow is not the sort of person you would socialise with. He’s one of those people who has a reputation wherever he goes, and not just any old reputation; Alex is known for his violent outbursts. Most people, including Kyle, think he’s a psychopath, but that’s only half the story. Alex is a young cage fighter, a talent in the lucrative and illegal market of underage fighters. Events will lead Alex and Kyle together, for better or worse...more

It wasn't as dramatic as the title suggested. Yes, the boys did clash, but not in the catastrophic way I was expecting. It was also an easy read, perfect for the age group it was aimed at. Because each "chapter" was so short I can also see how it could appeal to those who would not read books normally, and therefore encourage them to do so. This also added to the overall fast pace of the novel and the build up of tension.

I enjoyed the book for what it was. It was gritty, harsh and realistic. I a...more

ok this book had one drawback it was very SHORT, it was like the author was in a hurry, i don mean it was made badly, but he could have added MORE!! , i liked it and finished in one day :D and really REALLY liked Alex :), and i wonder if its only me Kyle and Gareth reminded me of protagonist of Diary of a wimpy kid and his friend XD
it was a lovely story in a harsh way :)

Despite the themes and language (by that I mean swearing) CLASH by Colin Mulhern is an amazing book. I completely agree with the statement on the back of the book by Anthony McGowan, author, that reads: "Mulhern is definately the next name in tense, gritty teenage fiction."
CLASH is definately a boy book. The themes and events and just the feel of the whole book is aimed at a male audience, particularly teens.

A enjoyable read that could have had more action to it. The story is broken into two points of view and two different home lives. There is a slight twist to the story but the ending is a bit disappointing it seemed that kyle and alex would finally show some sort of connection then it just stops..

Deeply disturbing and uncomfortable to read, but also intensely gripping and compelling - and I cared deeply about both of the main characters by the end. This book is so far outside my usual comfort zone, but I'm really glad I read it.
