Being a huge fan of the BBC series, I decided it was tie to read the stories it was based on. Since this is a compilation of several novels and short stories, I've decided to add to this review as I finish stories.
A Study in Scarlet - 4 stars:
I was really surprised by how easy this was to read. I was expecting it to be dull and difficult to read; instead I stayed up late finishing it - I couldn't put it down! I especially enjoyed how Doyle told the story from the point of view of the victim and...more

WHEN I WAS 17 YEARS OLD, MANY YEARS AGO, I STARTED TO READ THIS BOOK AND IMMEDIATELY LOST INTEREST. PERHAPS I WAS TOO YOUNG TO APPRECIATE THE USE OF THE PROPER ENGLISH LANGUAGE. I ALWAYS REGRETTED NOT FINISHING THE BOOK AND DECIDED TO TRY AGAIN. I OWN A HARD COPY AND ALSO HAVE COPY OF THE BOOK ON MY NOOK. I READ THIS BOOK ON THE NOOK WHICH WAS GIVEN TO ME AS A GIFT. I PREFER A HARD COPY, BUT IN THIS CASE, BECAUSE OF ALL THE SHORT STORIES THE NOOK WAS PERFECT.

I had a highly abridged collection of Sherlock Holmes tales as a young lad, and I can now safely say that they don't hold a candle to the complete works. I was left with that special sadness one feels when losing a long time friend upon completion of these stories. I had to stop reading for a tick before carrying on to "Tales Of Terror And Mystery."
The tales at the end are great, but the Sherlock Holmes stories are the real gold here. Each "singular" tale is fantastic in its own special way. I...more

I watched a lot of Sherlock Holmes movies and TV series but I never read an original story by Arthur Conan Doyle.
When I saw this edition over at Amazon I could not resist to buy it for the incredible price of 0,99 EUR.
I will read the stories in order of appearance in this digital edition. That will take some time. Therefore I decided to add a comment for every story I finish.

I always wanted to read Sherlock Holmes, but when I looked into Doyle's Bibliography I found out about the impossible large size of his Sherlock Holmes Stories. I was always someone to read works in their proper order and by sheer luck came across this Complete Collection for 99 cent.
When you can excuse the absence of Doyle's uncompleted Sherlock Holmes Stories and works from/with co-workers, mostly short-stories, essays and vignettes and play adaptations (all those are only a couple of works) t...more

Holy cow! How had I never read these before. Fantastic. Have read the first two novels and first book of short stories so far. Really fun.
I can finally say that I have read the Sherlock Holmes canon: All 56 short stories and 4 novels. In this collection, they are presented in order of publication. I had thought that I had read more of the original Doyle stories than I actually had. I was pleasantly surprised. The originals are much better than I expected them to be. I had a great time. Now if I can only figure out the chronological order of the stories . . . And I am not even going to mention Dr. Watson's personal live . . . Sherl...more
Finally finished! Holy.crap. It took me about 6 months to read through the almost 1900 pages of this collection. It was worth it though - the Sherlock Holmes stories are pretty entertaining and Doyle's other tales of mystery & terror were suitably creepy. Definitely worth having around to read every now and then.
I am fascinated by Holmes' thought processes and the skill that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had to create such a character.

Arthur Conan Doyle was born the third of ten siblings on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father, Charles Altamont Doyle, was born in England of Irish descent, and his mother, born Mary Foley, was Irish. They were married in 1855.
Although he is now referred to as "Conan Doyle", the origin of this compound surname (if that is how he meant it to be understood) is uncertain. His baptism record...more
