I was interested in reading this book because I am a Psychology student with a huge interest in Child Psychology. I felt like this book might depict real life situations that so many children are living with everyday. I was right about that, as it is very realistic with such real characters that you are likely to forget that it is just a story and the characters are ficticious. Lynda martin has written a wonderful story that will knock your socks off!

When you open the pages of this book you do not step into a world of pretty flowers and sunny skies, you walk into the world of sexual abuse, violence, trauma and more heartache then any young girl should know. All this from a man who is suppose to love and protect her, her step-father. This is the world of Bria Jean. Bria has had a rough life. Her mother has taken her from relative to relative. Bria is torn from people she loves that aren't technically related to her, and she now lives with a cruel aunt. After running away, Bria is

This is one of those special books that occasionally comes along that just wraps one up in its warmth – cocooning and insulating the reader within its own special world and boundaries.

Bria’s story is one of triumph over the evil that people can inflict on others – sometimes intentionally, sometimes thoughtlessly. It also examines the people around us in life. For all the suffering that Bria endured, she was also fortunate because there were a few steadfast people close to her to love her; even as bull-headed and contrary as she sometimes could be. But then again, it is those very qualities that gave her the strength and determination to prevail and to overcome obstacles she encountered in her young life.

This is a tale told with warmth and candor, but one that also unflinchingly examines some ugly truths about the society in which we live. Ugliness that is not confined to the lower echelons but rather permeates the fabric of life and festers malignantly all around us, for the most part unseen, or at least unacknowledged. It is so much easier to remain blind to that which we may feel powerless to change or conquer.

In my opinion, Bria is fortunate to have Jack as her rock in her young life. Thirteen years older than Bria, he babysat her, fought for her, and was her anchor. Jack, an honorable man, helped Bria and stood by her during the most difficult times. He, along with Mary, became, in essence, Bria’s surrogate parents – but more, too. This story is one that will remain with me for a good, long while. There are many nuances to it that I find myself thinking about at odd moments. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to read this book and I am looking forward to the next installment of Bria’s fascinating life.

Jack gets Bria to talk about how her step-father beat her mother, and sometimes her. And a lifelong friendship is formed. After Bria is sold to ‘bad men’ when she is twelve and used as a pawn in child pornography, Jack is one of the few people that can help her come out of her shell.
“Our experiences always affect us, often in ways we don’t recognize,” is a phrase that This Bird Flew Away puts to good use. Throughout the book, Bria experiences this over and over again. She also begins to understand the meaning of, “We don’t deal with our trauma once and call ourselves cured.”

Using her experiences as a way to help others just like herself, Bria grows up as normal as a young girl who has been traumatized can. Like she says, “Picking up the pieces is all we can do.”

I have to be honest, before I received the book and read the reviews that I did, I was concerned I wouldn’t be able to connect with Bria and her story. I was very pleasantly surprised that many of the feelings she experienced--lack of trust, feeling the guilty one, and wondering why things happen--those that are considered ‘normal’ also feel.

Lynda Martin takes a very real occurrence, one that happens far too often, and turns a tale that keeps your interest the whole way through. I found it hard to put the book down, although I had to because of some of the content…Emotions got to me many times.

This is a read for everyone. I think most people will connect with something in this book. The best way to describe the book’s message comes from the words of the author, Bria’s story is one of optimism, the healing power of love, the strength of the human spirit, the connection of family and the triumph over evil.

I look forward to seeing what is next from Lynda Martin.

This is a first for me, I’m a reviewer who has specific genres where my heroine is a woman who normally kicks butt and fights monsters. But, I was given a chance from the Enchanted Blog Tour to review: This Bird Flew Away by Lynda M. Martin, which was way out of my element. I have to say I’m glad I took the leap and tried something new.

This is definitely a coming of age story, the heroine in this genre has no powers but she has strength in her personality and instincts that help her survive. The hero is no immortal but a man who is a hero for being caring and protecting, he’s not perfect, neither lead characters are but they are real.

Bria is introduced at the funeral for her stepfather, a man who was horrible and not well liked. This is also where you meet Jack, a young but a lot older family friend who becomes her best friend.

Bria has an extremely hard life ahead of her and the only constant is Jack. The story is written from Bria and her Aunt Mary’s point of view. I’m not a big fan of jumping back and fourth between characters but I do have to add I would of loved to know what Jack was thinking. But this is only my opinion.

A major factor in the book is the relationship between Jack and Bria. At sixteen she feels she’s in love with him, the man that’s always protected her. Since Jack and her have a major gap in difference for their ages it makes for some inappropriate actions, that Jack I felt handles pretty well as he always reminds her to find someone her age. But deep down you can see he has to fight his feeling for her just as much as she does. The end of the book I felt was so right in what happens with the two of them. Lynda M. Martin really did great job in creative sculpting a touching resolve, which will continue on to the next book.

A lot of very sad situations happen in this book, from abuse, to kidnapping, but it really opens the reader’s eye to what some children have gone through in the real word. It’s a story with a message of hope and possibilities and I’m intrigue to see what happens next.

As for a book that doesn’t have any paranormal elements I liked this book. It was a bit tough in the beginning to get into but really flew once I hit the middle and kept my attention. I appreciate the opportunity to read this story even though it was not my normal cup of tea.

When shortly after, Bria’s mother vanishes off the face of the earth, the young girl and her infant sister Tara, are forced to go live with their aunt, who Bria calls “Jess the Mess”. Unfortunately, this woman proves to be the most horrible parent or foster parent in history, as she occasionally hits Bria as well as her own children, or locks them up in the basement. Overcome with terror, especially for the fate of her little sister when growing up in such home, Bria tries to contact Jack and ask him for help. When several of her attempts fail, and she stabs her aunt with a knife in a desperate attempt to save herself from yet another severe beating, Bria runs away. But unfortunately for little Bria, the worst is yet to come…

We meet Bria again when she is a recovering survivor in some sort of safehouse, and has trouble accepting the fact she could not save the girl who was kidnapped along with her, or the fact that she was raped, humiliated and hurt beyond repair. It’s Bria’s aunt Mary who eventually takes her into her house, and takes care of Bria and her little sister from that point onward. But Bria’s fight isn’t over – it’s only just begun. She must find the strength to live again, to be happy again, to love again. The road is long, difficult and sometimes even nearly impossible. And somewhere along the way, there’s Jack, the fact that she loves him and always has loved him, and the small possibility that those feelings are mutual.

Bria’s voice is very authentic, real and honest. The story she tells us is both heartwrecking and encouraging, because it makes us believe there is still light at the end of the tunnel, that there is still hope no matter how hopeless a situation seems. The story is told from two different perspectives: Bria’s and Mary’s, and although I enjoyed this, I would have liked to see another perspective as well: Jack’s. I would have liked to know his take on things, his feelings for Bria and how they developed.

The relationship between Jack and Bria from the time she is a sixteen year old girl with an interest in her older protector to when it actually turns into something more when she’s a grown woman of twenty-four, starts from being awkward and inappropriate but also understandable and turns gradually into something practically inevitable, and for some strange reason it feels right when they finally give into their feelings for each other. It seems natural for Bria, as a young, insecure and traumatised teenager, to turn her affections to the only person who’s always been there for her, no matter how much older he is. On the other hand, it’s clear from the start that Jack has very deep and affectionate feelings for the young girl he’s meant to protect, and if they start to change when she hits the final stages of puberty, it is understandable as well. He is the only one she can ever trust her heart to, and she is the only one he would give his heart to. Their relationship is bittersweet, and the way Lynda M. Martin manages to turn it from something inappropriate and wrong at the start, to something that feels so destined and right at the end, shows a great deal of writing and story-crafting skills.

I loved how Bria, strong and willful as she is, makes it her job to aid people who have been through the same thing as she went through, other survivors. She is a wonderful example of strength, courage and hope, and she is eager to pass along those qualities to others, to let them rely on her own strength and courage to find their own hope. She is one of the most inspiring characters I’ve ever come across. I loved Jack as well: he is righteous, determined and protective, a man who will never stand down for something he believes in, a man who will never give up no matter how hard things get. He is an inspiring person as well, and I’m glad to have got to know two people this wonderful and amazing in one single book.

Lynda Martin’s writing style in This Bird Flew Away is very fluent, and she manages to pull her readers in from page one. When I learnt that she took her inspiration from several cases of child abuse she’s come across over the years, I was even more amazed with the way she manages to put reality to fiction in the pages of this book. Child abuse is horrible and gruesome, but it happens every day, and we close our eyes for it all too often. Children in need of help are left to rely only on themselves, and not a week passes by that it isn’t on the news that a child died in horrible circumstances. Deaths that could have been prevented, if we took more appropriate care of all children – not just our own, or our relatives – or if the system worked better. Every day, children a lot like Bria, are kidnapped, tortured and raped for the pleasure of sick-minded individuals. But the worst thing is that we often close our eyes to the pain of children, to their despair, that we read the newspaper, shrug it off and continue having our family dinner without even feeling sad, or at least not for longer than a minute. That we see children on the street getting hit by their parents, but that we turn our backs and pretend it never happened. I would like to thank Lynda Martin for putting child abuse in the spotlight again, for trying to make her readers see how terrible it is, the events themselves and the aftermath, and how it scars a child for life.

But This Bird Flew Away isn’t really about how gruesome these things are, or about how utterly sickening and terrifying child abuse is. As I already mentioned, it’s mostly about hope. About overcoming abuse, and about growing up to be the best person you can possibly be. It’s truly an inspirational book, and I advise everyone to read it. You will not be dissapointed.

The story begins with Bria, at ten years old she has already had a tough life. Domestic violence coupled with physical and emotional abuse, Bria’s notion of the world is formed based on these early experiences. When she is abandoned by her mother after the death of her step father, Bria is taken in by Jack and his aunt Mary for a short while before she goes off to live with other relatives along with her half-sister Tara. Bria strikes up a trusting friendship with Jack who is thirteen years her senior. He is studying to be a lawyer and becomes one of the few people in her life who she can truly count on.

Bria, a determined and strong-willed young girl makes the decision to leave home and get help for her and Tara and save them from further abuse. She runs away in search of Jack, but doesn’t make it. She becomes a victim of the child sex trade. She is only twelve.

When Bria is reunited with Jack and Mary her sense of self is damaged and she struggles to make sense of her experience and feel safe again. Bria’s strength and determination is amazing and it gets her through this turbulent time along with the help of her trusting friend Jack.

This story shows us how a young child’s innocence is stolen, and how she fights back and tries to make sense of this scary, unsafe world.

This story is told from the perspectives of Bria and her aunt Mary. I was instantly drawn in and felt Bria’s pain, confusion and anger alongside her. I cried. I laughed. I hoped that she would find happiness. It’s not often that a story like this comes along and reminds you of what is truly important in life.

Having worked in the child protection field inAustraliawith abused children and now working with women, some with childhood trauma I am well aware that stories like Bria’s are not uncommon. I have also read many memoirs where survivors have shared their experiences of trauma. But what I think Linda does so well in her fiction novel, This Bird Flew Away is to show the range of emotions and inner conflicts a young child’s experience after trauma in an objective but empathetic fashion. The range of perspectives and Bria’s interactions with those around her makes the people real- flaws and all.

I must warn you though; this story is not for those with a sensitive stomach. But if you can stick out the bad parts and stay alongside Bria as she transforms from a girl into a woman you will be pleasantly rewarded with this well told story.

Bria’s relationship with Jack did initially make me squirm at times (probably because of my own professional background- on face value their relationship just seems wrong). I felt protective of Bria. When will this man abuse her trust, like every other? But as the story evolved, despite my unease with their age difference I can see that Jack and Bria truly love each other. They know each other at a very deep and trusting level and I think well could any other man have looked after and kept her so emotionally contained over all those years? If a warm-hearted, gentle and caring man like Jack was not in her life- Bria’s life would have taken a much different course- most likely for the worse.

This Bird Flew Away identifies many psychosocial issues in our society. I think it’s an important reminder for people to think about where someone has come from, their early experiences before they judge who they are today. Young women are often judged by their behaviour; whether it be promiscuity or other risk taking behaviours – but there is a reason behind this behaviour- conscious or not. What this story shows nicely is how early experiences can shape the way we view the world.

This Bird Flew Away is a truly touching story of pain, survival and hope. Although, the ending was not exactly what I had hoped, I was thrilled to find a sneak preview for the sequel. I am looking forward to finding out what happens with Jack and Bria in the future. 5/5!

An amazing book - I couldn't put it down.

When the author, Lynda M. Martin contacted me and asked me to review her book, she warned me it wasn't quite what I usually read and I wondered what I had gotten myself into. It turned out I'd gotten myself into reading one of the best non-fantasy books I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

Lynda Martin displays such a great writing style in this amazing tale of heartbreak and hardship... At the beginning of the story, I had one minor issue but it quickly resolved itself. The problem was that Bria was only 9 yet thinking in her mind like an Oxford grad with such words that most people don't use on an average day let alone think.
