What is real love? The whole world wants to know. They should ask Bria Jean, because she has it all figured out. Opinionated, stubborn and full of woe, Bria would tell you real love is having one person you can always count on through thick and thin. For her, that's Jack. And it doesn't matter to her that she's nine and he's twenty-three-not one bit. When, at the age of tw...more

I was interested in reading this book because I am a Psychology student with a huge interest in Child Psychology. I felt like this book might depict real life situations that so many children are living with everyday. I was right about that, as it is very realistic with such real characters that you are likely to forget that it is just a story and the characters are ficticious. Lynda martin has written a wonderful story that will knock your socks off!

When you open the pages of this book you do not step into a world of pretty flowers and sunny skies, you walk into the world of sexual abuse, violence, trauma and more heartache then any young girl should know. All this from a man who is suppose to love and protect her, her step-father. This is the world of Bria Jean. The things that happen to her are not fair but she has courage and hope and she survives and thrives.

I really liked Jack. He was much older than Bria but there was always a connect...more

Bria has had a rough life. Her mother has taken her from relative to relative. Bria is torn from people she loves that aren't technically related to her, and she now lives with a cruel aunt. After running away, Bria is
missing, and when she's found they know something traumatic has happened. Bria must learn to live with what as happened while making a new life for herself. This may prove harder than Bria ever expected.

The beginning of this book was not an easy read at all. Bria has an awful life...more

The story of a young girl’s travails and journey to adulthood is warmly conveyed through alternating voices and POV of the girl, Bria and her aunt, Mary. I frankly, became immersed in Bria’s young life right from the start. This is one of those special books that occasionally comes along that just wraps one up in its warmth – cocooning and insulating the reader within its own special world and boundaries.

Bria’s story is one of triumph over the evil that people can inflict on others – sometimes...more

“Girls grow up, you know?” Bria Connelly sure did. Saddled with a father she never knew and a mother who loved her in her own way, but who was afflicted with a disease not well-known at that time, Bria steps up and tries to help her baby sister whenever she could.

After her step-father dies, and her mother leaves her with an Aunt she despises, in a place she didn’t want to be, ten-year-old Bria grew up much faster than most. Her only “friend” is a cousin, an older male cousin at that. Jack becom...more

REVIEW:
This is a first for me, I’m a reviewer who has specific genres where my heroine is a woman who normally kicks butt and fights monsters. But, I was given a chance from the Enchanted Blog Tour to review: This Bird Flew Away by Lynda M. Martin, which was way out of my element. I have to say I’m glad I took the leap and tried something new.

This Bird Flew Away is a strong, powerful book with an even more powerful message. Bria’s struggle for love and life is very confronting. Although you might think differently at first, this book is not about child abuse. It’s about overcoming abuse, about struggling to find your way in the world after, about being a survivor.

We meet Bria first at the funeral of her stepfather, an abusive man who occasionally hit her mother. Shortly after, we are introduced to Jack, a friend of the family who is...more

What do you do when innocence dies?

Bria is a typical little girl by all outward appearances but inside lurks dark secrets and problems only adults should have to face. She is smart but confused with the world around her. To top it off, she has no one to talk to about these problems. That is, until, Jack finds her in the basement of the family home during a funeral. Jack is Bria’s best friend and the one person she will talk to. Unbeknownst to them both, that friendship will be tested and strengt...more

WOW. What a read.

The story begins with Bria, at ten years old she has already had a tough life. Domestic violence coupled with physical and emotional abuse, Bria’s notion of the world is formed based on these early experiences. When she is abandoned by her mother after the death of her step father, Bria is taken in by Jack and his aunt Mary for a short while before she goes off to live with other relatives along with her half-sister Tara. Bria strikes up a trusting friendship with Jack who is th...more

An amazing book - I couldn't put it down.

When the author, Lynda M. Martin contacted me and asked me to review her book, she warned me it wasn't quite what I usually read and I wondered what I had gotten myself into. It turned out I'd gotten myself into reading one of the best non-fantasy books I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

It is extremely well written and the 3 main characters and point-of-views Bria, Jack and Mary are fantastically alive and real. Set in the real world it starts out in...more

Lynda Martin displays such a great writing style in this amazing tale of heartbreak and hardship... At the beginning of the story, I had one minor issue but it quickly resolved itself. The problem was that Bria was only 9 yet thinking in her mind like an Oxford grad with such words that most people don't use on an average day let alone think. The girl didn't learn the style from Nancy Drew (which was what she mainly seems to mainly read). As I have said, this resolved itself after the first few...more

This Bird Flew Away is a unique and clever look at the complicated relationships and emotions that make a family, of courage and cowardice, beauty and spitefulness, and love in so many degrees, an honest and heart-warming story of courage and triumph through some very rough waters.

I had the privilege to read/review her book before it was published and the above was my jacket review which was included on her website: http://www.lyndammartin.com/

Lynda has spent many years working with abused child...more
