I cannot wait to read the final installment.

Here's hoping LJ has Elena choose Damon, FINALLY. Once and for all. After all this time and all this build up between them, it would be a complete waste to end it with Stefan/Elena. I think Elena has grown out of her love with Stefan.

Elena belongs with Damon.

I hope Stefan gets his wish to become human and I hope Damon turns back into a vampire. And I never really liked Bonnie but I think she should be with Matt.

I can not wait to read this one! Personally I hope it's better then the other two new ones. I'm personally rooting for the Damon/Elena relationship because for one thing, they were a match made in heaven. And for another, it's like forbidden love which makes it all the more interesting. I've never liked Bonnie, but have always loved Damon and personally think they would make a horrible couple. Bonnie and Matt have more sparks! I will seriously cry my eyes out if Damon and Bonnie end up together....more

I really, really, really, really, really can't wait for this book to come out. Midnight's release date has been changed at least 6 times and I just want to read it. I hope Elena's going to end up with Damon. She really does belong with Damon and not Stefan. If Damon doesn't change back into a vampire and Elena chooses Stefan in the end, I swear I'll cry harder than I've ever cried in my life.

Oh, by the way, this is a LONG review. And i gave it four stars because everything is riding on this book for me, and if it doesn't fit the bill I so desperately hope it does, bad things will happen in my mind.

Hmm. I absolutely adore these two series, and I say "two series'" because, well, it in truth has to be two series'. Hmm. I absolutely adore these two series, and I say "two series'" because, well, it in truth has to be two series'. In the first four books, Elena meets Stefan and Damon, falls for Stefan, becomes a vampire, dies whilest being a vampire, and is a---ghost?---in the fourth book. Then she's brought back to life somehow, still not quite sure how, at the end of the fourth book.
Okay. Happy ending right there.
Then three more books come out, clearly stating in their titles "THE RETURN".
Why am I saying this? Because, let's face it, everything is different for Elena now, and Stefan practically becomes a non-entity while Damon steals the show. And, you know what, I'm happy in a way, because Stefan never really did it for me in the first four books, and I will put the Vampire DIaries in my "Never Read Again Nor Recommend To Anyone Because the Ending was Plain Torture" book series list, along with the Hunger Games series and maybe the Immortals series, if Elena does not end up with Damon.
In the first four books, fine, Damon wasn't just the bad boy, he wasn't even a consideration for Elena because of his "You're mine" attitude towards her. That, I feel, was the only thing to hang on to in the first four books, as the relationship between Stefan and Elena was never fully developed and has rather been annoying for the entire series, both of them in fact. In the Vampire Diaries published in the 1990s, Elena needed to love and be loved by someone who could show her the gentleness and beauty in the world. Now, in the 2000s, Elena needs to show this to Damon, and, in a way, has already. But when she gets Stefan back at the end of the sixth book, Stefan and Elena's emotional connection are, I feel, not only lacking, but... inadequate. You, even if you like the "Stelena" duo, don't feel the fire in their relationship anymore, as the "Delena" relationship now has that flare.
So my point is: DAMON AND ELENA are the ones who belong together now, not Stefan and Elena or Damon and Bonnie. (Bonnie's character, I don't know, has never really interested me. She reminds me of a faithful little chihuahua, not a potential love interest).
This is what I hope will happen: yeah, Damon and Elena make the couple that should be made (and yeah, umm, don't they kiss in the sixth book? A lot? Show deep feelings for each other that make you so freaking giddy you have to stop reading and squeal, even if three lines down the page they get into an argument?) Ummm, Alaric and Meredith... eh... I honestly don't care what happens to them. Their relationship is kind of... uninteresting. Bonnie and Matt, sure, okay, have them end up together. Not for any deep, emotional, I-love-you-so-much-and-I-can-never-be-without-you way, but just because they both need a shoulder to cry on, I think. Oh, Damon should become a vampire again, Elena maybe going to become a vampire, (like, hint at it and not actually write it in), and Stefan I feel nuetral towards. He wants to be human, well, okey-dokey then. He wants to stay a vampire to always and forever protect ELena, even though she isn't in love with him anymore? Super. I know Stefan is supposed to be a major character, but I lack all feeling towards him, and have lacked said feeling since the beginning of the Elena/Stefan/Damon story.
This being said, if Elena ends up with Stefan, or Bonnie with Damon (blech), I will stare at the walls and mope for hours, maybe even days, because that feeling that you've lost someone dear to you? I'd feel that in abundance.
And oh, I read the book synopsis on amazon, and I have to say that I think it hints that Bonnie and Damon are going to end up together. Ver, very sad.(less)

Cannot wait for this book! My heart will be broken beyond pieces if Damon and Bonnie end up together, I don't even care if Bonnie and Matt do! If L.J Smith is reading this please don't!! I love all the book you've made especially The Forbidden Game.

I except a dramatic but heart warming ending for everyone.. not Bonnie LOL!

Oh my gosh, i can't wait to read this book!! Every since I started reading the books, I've always been Team Stefan (phh Edward, you've got nothing on him...). Whenever I finished reading other book and the couple I wanted to end up together didn't exactly live happily ever after I'd always think, "Uh. That sucks. At least I can count on L.J Smith making Elena and Stefan end up together."

Wow! It starts from three days after dark dimensions kicked off with damon as human as ever although he still has his telepathic powers. Elena brings him human foods which leads to a confrontion before the fourth chapter! Damon, damon tut tut!

Little "redbird" Bonnie walks in on them holding each other and elena calls damon darling which bonnie reacts to and runs down to matt and meredith who are in the kitchen. A nice and easy start to the book and gets you...more

I think I hate all the characters in this book and I've no idea why I even bought it and read it. I don't even care that it ended on a giant cliffhanger, I will not read the next pile of shit 'trilogy' to find out what happens. I'm sick of L.J. Smith's shit.

Midnight is the seventh book in The Vampire Diaries series by L.J. Smith

It is one of my favourite books in the series. Especially since Meredith has a larger role in it. And the plot was addictive, the characters were well-developed, and the writing was gripping.

It is sad that this is the final book in the series written by L.J. Smith. When she started the series, she signed a "Work for Hire" contract, which gave Alloy Entertainment the rights. So they were able to fire her, but I don't know wh...more

Throught the book, there are many twists and unexpected moments that I loved. The only fault is that I am now frustrated with the whole Elena Stefan Damon triangle, I mean Elena just pick one for goodness sake.
I have read that L J Smith has signed on to do another trilogy in the series and has the 1st wrote, Phantom... No release date is set but I shall be waiting for it.

ANYWAY, this book was, by far, the best of The Return series of The Vampire Diaries (TVD). Nightfall was okay, but difficult to understand. Shadow Souls made everything more understandable and gave Damon his chance with Elena. That strange world they were in had an interesting premise. However, this one left those books behind.

Bonnie is dragged back into that shadowy, sunset little world by Damon, who squanders his-- I mean STEFAN'S human gift and searches to be made back into a vamp by a high-ranking vampire. His first mistake? He drops distracted, giggly, overly afraid Bonnie in some motel in shadowland and leaves for three days. Way to be considerate to your 'little red bird', Damon.

Afterwards, you learn that Stefan and Elena--who had called Damon 'darling' by mistake earlier in front of Bonnie, Bonnie says they were canoodling to Matt and Meredith, then she profusely apologizes to Damon after she realized her mistake-- must find a way to tackle the whole Shinichi problem. Turns out Shinichi isn't working as the boss. He's doing someone else's bidding.

This all sets up to make a Fell's Church town that looks like a feral jungle (which I wasn't too fond of but creeped out by nonetheless), Damon going crazy saving Bonnie when Shinichi tries to kill her for her involvement with draining his sister's power and Damon KISSING her when he finds her (I am in full support of Damon falling in love with Bonnie and Elena being happy with Stefan), and a very long trip through the levels of the magical world in attempt to find the most powerful starball hidden in a little land Bonnie discovered in a story. It's very nicely done. At the end, good wins, SOMEBODY dies (at which I teared up even if I should have been sobbing but I'm a heartless wench), the Guardians intervene, Elena learns about the source of her parent's death, and that dead person has some hope left...... maybe.

The ending made me scream.

Alaric should really return to Fell's Church.

Meredith and Matt feel for each other, but know they must remain friends.

And Elena, Damon and Stefan (Stefan felt BAD at the end when he discovered Elena and Bonnie love Damon because he "should have realized it sooner!" Shut up Stefan) all could have solved their problems, had they shoved Damon and Bonnie together.

I am sooo Team Bamon. (I'd almost said Bon-mon, but it sounds Jamaican. BON-MON!)

Despite it not being as good as the original trilogy, I really rather enjoyed the previous book, Shadow Souls, so having initially been dubious about whether to read this new trilogy at all, I was looking forward to picking this one up.

Where the last book had had a clear quest throughout - get into dark dimension, find keys, release Stefan - this seemed to me...more I'm a huge fan of LJ Smith, so it really pains me to give one of her novels a fairly bad review, but this quite simply isn't a great book. Despite it not being as good as the original trilogy, I really rather enjoyed the previous book, Shadow Souls, so having initially been dubious about whether to read this new trilogy at all, I was looking forward to picking this one up.

Where the last book had had a clear quest throughout - get into dark dimension, find keys, release Stefan - this seemed to meander with no real sense of purpose. There were a number of different plotlines that didn't really fit together all that well, and some threads that were just entirely left hanging or even abandoned (the pots for the kitsune, Meredith's family situation, Matt's trial etc). As an example, anyone who read the previous book will have been looking forward to seeing how Damon copes with being human again, but this is never really explored and is quickly resolved. On the subject of Damon, I found him much more interesting as the near-villain he was in the original series than as the more or less accepted member of the group he is here.

There are some good bits, especially towards the end, but I found I almost had to force myself through the book, whereas with the author's previous novels, I've had trouble putting them down.

As with the last book, rather to my surprise I enjoyed the dark dimension sections the best (yup, they go back), although this wasn't developed quite enough - I was hoping there'd be some kind of slave rebellion for a start. Throughout, I sort of got the feeling that the author was almost trying to write two books in one - a conventional Vampire Diaries story - set in Fell's Church, focussed on friends and romance - and a fantastical tale of the dark dimension. I personally think it would have been better if the latter had been written as an entirely new book/series, with different characters (which I think could potentially have been very interesting indeed without the constraints of having to work around existing backstory and character relations)and that the old series had been left alone.(less)

After all, what is Damon, if not a mischievous vampire? Which is what Damon comes to the conclusion of, being a vampire is the very heart of who he is, or rather who he tries to pretend he is, and of course Damon wants this little 'inconvenience' of being human sorted asap.

Meanwhile, in true Vampire Diaries fashion, we switch between the goings on in the Dark Dimension and those in Fell's Church. And of course, from what we seen in the last book, the children of the town are still under the influence of evil Shinchi who seems more than ever set to destroy Fell's church after most of Miso's starball is used up. But while the once beautiful town of Fell's Church is slowly becoming a sight from a horror film, the crew start to uncover that Miso and Shinchi may not be the only ones set to destroy the town and its inhabitants and a shocking discovery shows that its not the first time this has happened in the world...

Cutting back constantly to the Dark Dimension where Damon is joined by Elena and Stefan, they set out on the search for treasure and a possible solution to the happenings back in Fell's Church but things are not what they seem and just when everything seems all right, tragedy strikes and things will never be the same again... Emotions run high and the consequences could be dire...

With an ending which is abrupt and isn't the full conclusion we might expect, we are left wondering if this really is the 7th and final book. The ending is not quite what seems to be an end. This maybe in part to having found out that ms Smith was going to continue the series, I had my hopes up, only for them to be crashed by Harper publishers who were not happy by the way Ms Smith planned to take series. Therefore i have decided to not purchase or read any of the books released by the ghostwriter as it it completely unfair that they can take someone's work which they have spends a decade on from them. absolutely disgusting (less)

Whut?

God Almighty, I don't know where the hell this series took a turn for the INSANE. I loved this series. That was until slimy things that I have never heard of and foxy supernatural creatures started taking over and people were going seriously batshit crazy. It's like Smith reached out into the depths of a black hole and pulled lint from the pages of beastiaries to keep this story going.

And the Dark Dimension. It would be great to read that in a fantasy series that focused on that one place....more

My first impression of this book was great, I loved how it had Bonnie on the front. Bonnie is one of my favorite characters, also one of the only reasons I have continued to read the books. Although I like the cover with Bonnie, I feel like a better candidate for the cover would be Meredith. She had a major role in this book, a lot of her secrets were finally revealed in this book. This book should have been named Secrets or something of that nature due to the fact that so many secrets were revealed in this book. Most were about Meredith but some were about Stefan, Damon, Bonnie, Elena, Matt, and also the town itself. I really liked this book, it kept me on my toes the whole time (except for the last 75 pages or so). With the constant revealing of secrets, this book was put as my third favorite book from this series. The last 75 pages were drawn out, I didn't like how long they spent talking to the council. But other than that, this book was great. I give this book 4/5 stars, because of the last 75 pages. You guys should really check this book out. Come back here next week for another book review, which will hopefully be Plague, but if not that it will be Invincible by Sherrilyn Kenyon. (less)

I loved the first two bind ups of L J Smiths Vampire Diaries. Granted they are nothing like the TV Series, and now I have read the books published to date I am glad, because the last three new books have really disappointed me. I think the 20 year gap between The Reunion and The Return Book 1 has a massive impact on my affinity towards it.

Not only can you see the changes in the writing of L J Smith - more modern (within the first few pages of Nightfall mobile phones were mentioned (not a big deal obviously but I noticed it and it made me laugh.)) but also I felt that she was trying to make the books as interesting as possible to compete with the new paranormal romance novels out there. Unfortunately I don't think this worked to her advantage as I found the books very confusing, convoluted and just plain irritating towards the end. Sometimes the trains of thought of the characters were weird. Coming up with an idea that I couldn't follow and didn't understand where it came from...for instance the element regarding Meredith's brother....it was mentioned in passing randomly and then not really touched upon again. An element that perhaps will be detailed further in the next set of books (first one out in October 2011) but for the moment unnecessary.

It took me a good two weeks to read this book, the others I got through quicker, I just couldn't understand how a story could span three 400 page books, it was too extensive and not in a good way which I never thought possible. Extremely disappointed but I am glad I read the first two bind ups, and unfortunately I have already ordered the new one, but after this I think I might just stick with the TV series as it is very different and much more enjoyable and intriguing. The characters aren't boring and don't frustrate me. I honestly think I could have strangled the book version of Bonnie and maybe even Elena. But you win some and you lose some.

Definitely try the first two bind ups but be cautious of the newer additions to the series.(less)

I have read all of the Vampire Diaries books, as well as many of LJ Smith's other books. I have been disappointed with The Return trilogy as a whole, but this particular book was just infuriating. The ending was so irritating I almost threw the book.

The whole Meredith side plot was not needed and seemed to be there only to add length to the book. The same thing with Elena and Bonnie's out of body experience.

I don't agree with the people who say it's not worth reading, though. There is some silliness in these books, but I think Midnight restores the tone, and brings the series to an appropriate (if a little abrupt!) conclusion. What to say, as series books go this one at least has a plot and characters that are somewhat original and not a retelling of past books. The world of Fell’s Creek is in chaos because of two Kitsune who were introduced in the last story. Stefan is back after being rescued by Elana and Damon, but he is not strong and needs blood.
