If you have a preschool age child, or one just learning to count, Hootenanny: A Festive Counting Book is a must-read! It only counts from one t0 five, so it's short, sweet, and doable for even the youngest counters. And the jive-like feel is FUN! Little readers will quickly catch on to the refrain:

Hootenanny, hootenanny--

it's time for fun.

Hootenanny, hootenanny--

the party has begun!

Kids loved saying Hootenanny! and every time, the word "boogie" caused them to laugh. They had no clue to what a boogie was. There's a QR code on the book to a video of the book being sung or visit the website http://bit.ly/s7QjrC. I read it as chant, but would probably incorporate the singsong tune next time. Activity sheets available online.

Great illustrations. Text is awkward to read aloud - doesn't flow well - though I do like the refrain "hootenanny, hootenanny - it's time for fun, hootenanny, hootenanny - the party has begun". You just don't get enough opportunities in life to say "hootenanny" IMHO.

Festive definitely describes this book! GREAT read aloud, repetition that the audience will pick up on after only 1 verse and rhyming text from cover to cover to keeps this tale moving. The pictures are bright and just 100% cute!

This is a book that I would love to hear as an audio. I sense that the rhythm matches a specific tune and would be received better with the tune known. Jo Brown's mixed media illustrations are fun.

I actively disliked everything about this book. It's repetitive, overly silly and the artwork is garish. And for a counting book, there aren't many number. This book literally counts to 5.
Paula
A fun counting book with bright illustrations about owls who are getting together for a fun party
Ashlee
A counting book up to 5; rhyming and repetitive phrases. Super colorful and fun. OWLS!
Mary
Bright-colored counting book with a beat. But the rhyme doesn't quite scan right...
Nicole
Enjoyable, mostly due to the vibrant and colorful artwork throughout...
Tara
So fun! Adorable owls and counting = AWESOME! Good repetition and rhyming too!

This is SO fun to read out loud! Also, any book with owls makes me smile.

Not my favorite book, but I think it may because there is a jazz feel to this (and I unfortunately don't get jazz at all!). The illustrations are cute--lots of things to look at to keep a child's eyes busy in a lap-read. It only counts up to 5, which I didn't expect--most counting books I know of go up to 10. Some of the rhyming didn't work for me, but that could tie in to my jazz fault. I don't think I could make this work well in a storytime--someone else might. But a good reader could definit...more

Of course, when owls have a party, it's not just any party; it's a HOOTenanny! Use this for a story time or class read aloud and have the kids say the refrain with you.
