Reasonably broad research base and use of interesting sources (thanks to Merle Pribbenow), but a lack of explanation about how Vietnamese sources were accessed and/or translated means the bibliography is to a large extent a blind alley for researchers who would like to follow his path. The topic is a very good one and there's an excellent story to be told, but Wilkins' poor writing, occasionally polemical tone, and tendency to depart on weird tangents mean the book ends up as a disappointment.
